Foods Substitute for butter in cooking? Sep 23 2008

Ok, maybe I'm wrong because I'm not a huge specialist, but i can't imagine what butter has to do in a Curry (Jambalaya i don't know, but it looks yummy) recipe, so I'd be wary of a site featuring that. If anything, a curry recipe would call for vegetable oil. Butter is more often used in recipes originating from cool climate zones, where it didn't spoil nearly as quickly (refrigerators are more recent than any traditional recipe.) Not that it changes anything calorie wise, but it just seems wrong :p

I used the couch-to-5k plan with success. I'm not sure if that could be so helpful to someone who already runs, but here's one version:

i used this one because of the simple layout compared to most others. Now running up to 6 miles, a small feat, but that i never approached before.

Cooking, i believe, is something that has to be learned, maybe more than people imagine. Learning from someone is probably the best way to go.

For example, when i tried to learn bechamel sauce (as in french cuisine, as it's the one i know best,) i read a lot of recipes, few of which were correct, and i was of course unable to decide which was right and which was wrong.

Only by seeing it done by someone i learned how a "roux" should look like and how to get to the sauce from there. You really have to see for yourself. Some things in cooking are difficult to share by theory alone.

btw i mainly use bechamel sauce for a traditional crockpot recipe, the 'poule au riz', as seen in the pic linked below. It's dead easy to cook, does not rely on spices (save for thyme and bay leaves.) I love spices but this is an example of recipe where they aren't needed... and it's very yummy.

perfect pic:
http://tropbon.canalblog.com/images/2006.03.1 2_Poule_au_riz.jpg
recipe here:
http://notreviequotidien.blogspot.com/2008/03 /poule-au-riz-part-ii.html
(recipe "forgets" the leek and turnip, and the bechamel recipe is a little different than the common use.. hard to find a recipe in English though)

Quite a few cooking usages, such as reduction or deglazing, are also very useful.

And to the risk of displeasing some, right know, thinking of food so much, i would love some black pudding with apple compote! omg i have to go shopping for food now!

A simple recipe of North African inspiration: cook a zucchini and mutton stew with a handful of olives and the rind of a preserved lemon (do not add water, or just a spoon or two if really necessary to start the thing, because the zuchinnis will sweat a lot.) Spice it during cooking with colombo powder, or ras-el-hanout, or maybe mild madras curry powder, in that order of preference... have a very tasty, low caloric, and delicious meal! Sauteed potatoes complement it well too!
note: preserved lemons bring a different taste than fresh lemons do, one cannot replace the other; they are easily home made, but you have to let them marinate at least a month or two.

and last a tip: gelatinous (connective) tissues of a meat help a stew attaining a natural and perfect thickness, and the bones of the meat add a great deal of taste to the end result.

"This is often called 'starvation mode' or 'famine response' - it's a hard-wired cave-man survival technique when times are hard. If someone carries on with very low calories they will keep losing weight but incredibly slowly."

I have really the greatest difficulties to believe that, because of personal dieting experience, as well as seeing the result of people going on -usually medically monitored- hunger strikes; ie, massive loss of weight.

Also, the only half-serious, half-believable page about that is this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famine_response

Oh, wow, so it would explain why the 150g of rice +20g whey proteins i eat a day at the moment (what some people here would call starvation mode since it's less than 800 cals for a 32yo male... I should not lose weight therefore?) doesn't actually put me in "starvation mode". Losing weight so fast can toy with my mood, but not much else in the way of bad things.

ps: "starvation mode" ==== "atkins diet/any low carbohydrates diet". Plain and simple. Proof from the article:

"After 2 or 3 days of fasting, the liver begins to synthesize ketone bodies from precursors obtained from fatty acid breakdown. The brain uses these ketone bodies as fuel, thus cutting its requirement for glucose. After fasting for 3 days, the brain gets 30% of its energy from ketone bodies. After 4 days, this goes up to 70%".

SUMMARY: starvation mode is nothing more than the ketosis, too funny. To avoid it, just eat enough carbohydrates to fuel your brain, and that's it. It has nothing to see with "not losing weight because not eating enough", which is yet another dieting myth.

Interesting quiz, though at least one question probaly doesn't fit anymore:

'Mothers may have careers, but their first duty is to be homemakers.

Strongly Disagree
Disagree
Agree
Strongly Agree'

I suppose that "agree" was Conservative and "Disagree" was Liberal, but those last days it's the left that asked repeatedly if a mother of 5 could have such responsibilities, and the right that defended that right. I wonder if it will stick, or if each side will get back to its ordinary convictions soon enough.

As a sidenote, here's an article about Sarah Palin from before the presidential race, in 2006:

http://dwb.adn.com/news/politics/story/833494 9p-8231037c.html

it's in two parts and each part is rather long, but it's very informative and shows her into a much more multifaceted and interesting light than the "party fighting maverick" or "gun totting bible thumping" summaries that we got these days from each side.

"Huh? That doesn't make any sense. If the government takes on debt, citizens need to pay for it some way or other. There isn't a free lunch."

I know people who worked in a city council. That town has never been in better shape than since the last mayor (that my family opposed) took a few loans to beautify the city, to make better infrastructures, and ultimately have more people and businesses living there and paying taxes.

The city has more debt, but also has a better present and future than the towns that didn't make that effort.

For all that I've read, this is exactly what happened in Wasilla. But you may have proof of the opposite, in which case maybe there would be something more to discuss here.

Let's see, an alcoholic trooper that made treats against Bristol up to this summer, and made death treats against S. Palin's father, and taseresd a 11 yo. What else?

quote: "Would you say that about a male candidate who's daughter was pregnant? I doubt it."

exactly:

'Barry himself says ?Children without fathers in their lives are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime, nine times more likely to drop out of school, and 20 times more likely to end up in prison.? Being President is a 24/7 job, constantly on the move, in meetings, making decisions, pumping the flesh, meeting donors, talking to Congress. [Obama] has 2 children. How can he possibly put himself in a position where his kids do not really have a father and the influence of a father?'

( http://www.stoptheaclu.com/archives/2008/08/3 0/obama-cant-be-a-good-father-while-president / )

lots of things have a double standard as soon as a woman is in the race. Palin's husband dui 24 years ago is fair game to the media, but Obama's own cocaine use is off-limits ?

On the upside, some bloggers maybe have uncovered (depsite dailykos trying to erase the worst pages) the identity of the guy who launched the vilest of the rumors, about Trig Palin being Bristol Palin's daughter. Hope he's shamed real good.

"cluster: are you honestly quoting random annonymous internet posts and assigning them validity? "

It's from the sites that creat websites against the vp and stir rumors. Digg was all over the Rep convention party seemingly, and several MSM (theIndependant UK for example) newspapers acknowledged the rumors that were born there. They wish to be heard by the MSM but not by normal people who can also make their mind?

ps: and that's how smear attacks are created. Some thread in a forum is dedicated to attacking someone, as soon a s something sticks it becomes a post on dailykos, as soon as it gather steam it goes to the Huff.. etc.

"Faith healing and speaking in tongues are considered extremist and are usually left to the nutjobs."

And you very simply believe the dailykos here? I would love to see a real, direct proof that the exact church she goes to is what the dailykos says it is.

quote: "Yes, she would. Sarah Palin is completely against a woman's right to choose. So, regardless of the circumstances surrounding her daughter's current pregnancy, Sarah Palin WOULD force her daughter (or yours, or me!) to have her (my) rapist's baby."

let's look at what S. Palin as to say about her own beliefs (btw she is FOR contraception as a "Feminists for Life")

Sarah Palin: "We?re proud of Bristol?s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents."

you: Sarah Palin WOULD force her daughter (or yours, or me!) to have her (my) rapist's baby

let's hear her again:

Sarah: "We?re proud of Bristol?s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents."

Yeah, SHE surely is the nutjob here.

"Finally, did you come to the defense of Obama, or Kerry for that matter, when the rumor mill was cranking out false stories about Obama being a muslim or Kerry being a coward? Be fair. It works both ways."

I'm not American, but seeing how all our politicians take cues from what happen in your country, it also interests me a lot. I must admit that I'm wary to see the USA resembling social democracies. As a libertarian leaning person, I see that successful business woman, elected chief of executive in her state so young, working with the governement to show that some chairmen had vested interest in oil when they should have been overlooking it... and seeing the vicious attacks, I admit it's a very unpleasing feeling.
And though I'm 100% atheist and pro-choice, i'm also appalled at the feelings of superiority that comes from liberals when they criticize this side of that person. No, there no feeling of superiority in not understanding why some people could think that even prenatal human life is something of amazing value. I don't agree but I get it. Liberals don't get it, they resume all of that to "guns and religion" with that smirk of superiority, well i'd love to see that smirk shoved up their ... x)

"You can put your family out there for brutal review or you can say, "Hands off" as Obama suggests. You can't have it both ways."

I don't know. Seeing from France, I know the Obama family a whole lot, girls, wife, very well known.

But a few hours after the announcement of Palin for VP, Obama's watchdogs (he reads and support the dailykos which launched all of the smear campaigns, including those against Hillary Clinton) have been pounding on her daughter like i rarly seen.

Also, example form the serious debate and discussion area of the huge SomethingAwful forum, from where are also created websites against Palin:

DailyKOS, DIGG and SomethingAwful have already been throwing an incredible amount of vicious attacks toward the Palin family since 48 hours. Their political sections are overflowing with smear attacks. They are the heart, eyes and hands of the most vicious smear machine i have ever seen.

I thought that the conservatives were biggots, how mislead i was. Because today they are outclassed by democrat attacks on the "trailer trash sluts and liars," to resume their never stopping and shameless smear attacks toward the Palin family. karl Rove looks like a sheep to me all of a sudden after all that I've read today on the aforementioned sites.

I'm not American but I'm sure happy to see that. I'd love the US to come back to a less bloated (would it only be for the exemplary effect) central government, and that seem to be the thing they can really deeply agree on, of all issues.

The war will go on until you can go home (means Iraq could defend itself if a neighbor decided to make a mess of it, which would be the totally awful and highly volatile and dangerous thing to happen to global security, US included.) For the social-conservative views, I can bet you 1000$ that even with her as VP you will still can abort in 10 years, that's just plain logic.

Then there's the ugly intellectual attacks, like she's just here because she's a woman. Let me think, there was no one other woman in the republican party, with more experience? ugly little attacks from ugly little people! or like how a pious gun totting mother, with for only experience to have put a stop to the "bridge to nowhere" and other pork spending, couldn't possibly make a good US president.

I'm not American, but I'd take her over a lawyer and senator any day of the week. Think of it. Who knows what endure normal people. Who will tell the truth. Who will be an ardent defender of a small government. What does it mean to be All-American? doesn't it mean that even an Actor can become an incredibly good leader? or a Miss?

This is USA. It's what people do that count. And what she did seem mostly right.

There's a tendency in the US to become more like our social democracies in Europe. Ban this, ban that. Tell people ot be this or that healthy, to use those or those bags when shopping. To put new taxes on energy, or to be delusional about it. I'm sorry of the shocking word, but it is the new brand of socialism, all pampered for the 21th century.

And if the US goes any further toward a big centralized nanny stater government where states have fewer rights, well the USA isn't even close anymore to what it was in its glorious days. Mc Cain and Palin would be my dream ticket if I could vote there. The kind of dream ticket I can only dream of where I am. Take it while you can. It's easy to have a big government. But it's a mess, and it's much harder to make it lose its weight. A thing we should know around here.

quote: "Why on earth should we put our life on hold for a 'few months'??"

Yes there ought to be change made in one's lifestyle to support, as you put it, "a healthier way of life in general." But I said nothing about putting one's life on hold, just maybe not eating out, since you... kind of want to.. lose weight? when it'll be time to merely "maintain" weight, then the healthier lifestyle and eating out can coexist.
Foods On a bag of frozen fish, it says "do not refreeze once thawed"... so what would happen if I refroze it? Aug 29 2008

"what would happen if I refroze it"

You'd create one of the most perfect breeding ground for bacteria for the next time it's thawed - because the structure of the food (and as noted above, therefore the taste) will be so broken down, twice, by ice crystals. And the fish may explode.

ps: also, when food is frozen on an industrial site, it is probably much better done (quicker i suppose) than in any consumer grade equipment.

Caloric intake: unknown, decided by hunger (I stop to eat before I'm not hungry anymore)

I generally eat well and learned to run around 25 miles a week, thanks to the "couch to 5k" plan. When not running for days I just eat a lot less. I follow my hunger and the averaged weight log to fix my eating goals, even if some calorie counting and nutrient learning did help in the beginning (especially for running, i didn't want to break down because of a lack of some nutrients at the very start, now I'm more relaxed about it since everything's okay.)

Devil is in the details.. lots of details in nutrition :p

Anyway, I think that most people would have better results if they listened to their hunger, their body, rather than by looking at numbers.

And in the short time that dieting takes, relatively to a life, i don't think that the nutrient-poor food one could eat (such as those white products) can impact on health. Or maybe for very specifically fragile people who should know better anyway.

Funny story. You've done very well so far. If, when you're thinner and therefore able, you discover yourself a pleasure for playing soccer or whatever with friends, to take long walks in the forest, to discover that running is fantastic, and that not being humiliated by old ladies is great... well you've got no reasons to stop now.

And also 80 years old people can have several ailments that can make them rather oblivious and agressive. So you shouldn't really think too much of that incident!
