Hi Loozy, I'm afraid Fidget is correct. At a BMI of 15, you are putting a huge amount of stress on your internal organs, your bones, your muscles, and especially your heart. I would say you need to find another doctor, preferably one who specializes in eating disorders, who can talk with you about a weight-gain program. Please listen. You are much closer to death than you realize. |

I would take issue with the idea that you're building muscle, though. 1256 calories per day is near the very minimum that a sedentary woman should eat, and so my guess would be that your body doesn't have enough nutritional resources to build muscle at this point. Especially given your history, your body is probably trying very hard to hold onto every ounce of stored fat that it can right now. Upping your calories to at least 1500 and probably more like 1800 on exercise days would be very wise, because it would give your body the resources to be able to let go of some of the stored fat you have. |

Yep, a negative pullup means you start at the top and lower yourself down as slowly as you can. It's tough! |

Omigosh you guys, I agree, chicks really shouldn't do pushups cause they're just too hard! And all those icky exercises with barbells? All they do is make you stronger and healthier, and everyone knows that's not the point at all. |

I live in Tennessee, and the obesity epidemic is very apparent almost anywhere you go, with the exception of the university campus where I work. But everywhere else in TN, there are so many overweight and obese people, it seems as though over half the population must be large. Truthfully, I find it deeply frightening. The very thought of losing my physical independence scares me more than almost anything else. Once a person starts to lose mobility, they're totally dependent on cars, elevators and a way of life that exists only in a delicate balancing act of international exploitation. What happens when we can no longer drive our cars everywhere, or have to start growing all our own food? I realize there is an edge of paranoia to this, but this is what motivates me to keep fit. |

Hi jcl, I am female and I can do pullups as well. I can only do three at a time right now, but I'm working my way up toward 10. Being able to do pullups makes you AWESOME. A lot more awesome than your friends, apparently. It's not just the bragging rights this affords; being able to effectively move and use your body grants you a kind of independence that is rare and valuable for women. Keep it! |

Hi Summer, I sympathize with you! This is hard! I've heard it said that Americans (I'm one, too) are very invested in the idea of unending passion and transcendent love, and that we have trouble moving from being 'in love' with someone to simply 'loving' them. This is a transition that all relationships go through, if they survive long enough. It's a good transition! Problems like yours are not relationship-enders, and can be worked out. I agree with the above posters who've said you need to talk to your SO about this, and also to plan some time just for the two of you. My SO and I plan time to watch funny movies, and we promise each other not to think about work during that time, but just to laugh and be together. |

Hi Kay, I wish I could help you, but I think you'll just have to try this new workout schedule and see what results you get. In my experience, there is no one type of workout or schedule that is most effective for everyone. All I know is that it's great that you're changing things up; it is always effective to keep your body guessing. I'd say just keep going for now and change things if you feel they need changing after a month. |

Cjkl, looking at your other posts, it's pretty clear that your eating habits are disordered. You have a suspicion that your propensity to overexercise and undereat is a problem; you're right! You need to see a doctor immediately. It would also be helpful to look for a therapist who specializes in eating disorders. Disordered eating habits can get out of hand very quickly, so don't delay! |

Volunteer work is truly the very best thing a person can do to lift his/her perspective up out of the self. We all spend so much time sunk in our own heads just over-analyzing every little thing about ourselves, and it's not healthy! (I don't just mean ED-sufferers, here. I mean the vast majority of Westerners. We're totally neurotic!) Thanks Abbi, you've inspired to me to get started again with volunteer work. I'm going next week to spend a day working on my friend's urban community farm. Can't wait! |

To answer the other part of your post, a calorie deficit of 1000 is too large. Try to keep the deficit between 500 and 700 calories. Then you'll see results quickly (about a pound a week) without feeling famished all the time. |
