Original Post by floggingsully: Yes I wholeheartedly agree with you (and don't think you're being hardheaded at all), there is a HUGE difference between degrees. Anyone can write a book and get it published, it does not make you an expert just because you can publish something. There are thousands of ridiculous health myths out there (my dads a doctor, so hes told me about many of them), that many people will read an article or two on, and then be completely convinced they are true. |

I have never had an extreme ED, but I have been obsessively counting calories (by that i mean restricting to anywhere from 800-1200, but not extreme restricting) for quite some time, and I developed bulimia this past year also... For me, I am putting myself through a mini self-recovery because I realized that the point of eating healthy food and making sure not to overeat is...health. Making myself throw up for eating too much of the "wrong food" or 100 calories over, or making myself shove as many calories as possible down my throat and then puking it up is just completely horrible for my body, in sooo many ways. I do not want to be stuck in this addiction and messed up food relationship for the rest of my life! I'm having an extremely hard time with this, and I don't even have a super bad ED!! I cannot imagine the psychological pain you must be going through. If no one is making you recover, do it for yourself, because we only have ONE life, and it should not be lived being completely, cripplingly calorie-obsessed I believe. Health makes for long healthy lives! |

Hi, I'm wondering, how far along in the psychological aspect of your recovery do you feel yourself to be?? If you're truly recovered, you should want to gain weight because it is healthy. It is horrible for your health, even if you feel completely fine, to be that significantly underweight. When you are of a minimum healthy weight, how do you know you won't feel even better than you do right now? Also, your profile says you love to dance, so wouldn't it be fabulous to have even more energy than you do now to dance? It is imperative that you be of a healthy weight because until then, you are not recovered physically from your years of starvation. I really hope this helps! Cowcow |

Hi! I see you've already received a lot of posts, but I definitely would be willing to be your bulimia recovery buddy! I posted a similar thread several months back also. I have had lots of food related issues for a while now, and have been self-recovering from bulimia for a while, and I have been doing great lately :) Please send me a message about anything at all! I love to give and receive advice! Also, even though others have already said this, please don't "wicked restrict" for 3 days! It seems like the "right" and good thing to do I know, but it is completely unhelpful. Instead focus on eating a smaller amount of calories, that are very healthful, and exercise will make you feel better also.

Hmmm...neither I or anyone else on this forum is a great person to get advice for proper nutrition from, although I would definitely say: If you're doing 30-40 miles a week and are at a good weight and 5'8" DEFINITELY eat more than 1,200 calories, that is definitely way too much restricting! yes, it is healthy to live a "calorie restricted" lifestyle in the sense that you make sure not to overeat and eat a healthy and balanced diet, but not in the sense that you eat such a massive deficit every day.!! As far as stoking your metabolism, from what I know it is best to try and even out your eating patterns daily. As in, eat relatively similar amounts of food at around the same times each day. Eating smaller amounts more frequently throughout the day is a great way to make sure you don't become too hungry before you wait to eat, which discourages binging and allows you to eat more often anyhow! Supposedly eating more frequently also keeps your metabolism up, but I have no idea if this is merely urban myth. Perhaps see a nutrionist who can help you establish a daily meal plan? Hope this helps.! |

I definitely eat A LOT of veggies and fruits throughout the day, they make up the majority of my intake! I think eating more than the recommended minimum amount of servings is healthy, as long as you obviously stay within the calorie limit and also eat protein, fat and carbs of course. I probably eat like 8 servings of veggies a day haha! |

I agree with ecwk6 that you shouldn't lose weight solely based on your bmi, or consider yourself "not skinny" because you're on the upper end of the healthy bmi range. However, if it would make you feel better and healthier about yourself to get toned up and lose a few pounds, I see nothing wrong with that, as long as you do it healthily and don't get too obsessed, or base your entire self-worth on your diet or anything. |

Original Post by gelahope: Whoa why did you take such offense to what I said? I never accused you of being anorexic I don't know where that came from... The way you worded your post made it sound as if you were trying to only eat 400 calories a day but would binge and ruin it, sorry for misunderstanding what you meant! I also never said you were stupid, I thought you genuinely might have been thinking that eating very little was good for weight loss, and I was just trying to help you out...
Anyhow, i agree with fooledbyfaith, I think that by eating 400-400 cals throughout out the day because you know you will binge at night is setting yourself up to binge. Not sure if you want my advice, but I would just try and tell yourself that you're not going to binge one night because you can be in control of yourself, and if you want to eat, eat something filling and healthy like a large stiry fry of onions and cabbage, or soup, or if you want no calories tea with splenda. |

Yea, why exactly were you trying to eat only 400-500 calories a day anyhow? What are your height and weight stats also? At the very least you can eat 1200 calories a day, which would make three 400 calorie meals spread throughout the day, definitely much more satisfying than only attempting to eat 400 all day! Plus, it is a much healthier and more effective long term weight loss method. |

Ya I think a lot of my problem was that I drink WAY too much and get way too drunk, and then completely lose all inhibition and eat a ****. I'm going to for the next several weeks drink only a couple drinks when I'm out, I think this should hopefully solve the problem. fitnessgirll congrats on quitting cocaine, thats admirable! I don't have a drinking issue, i just do not want to quit completely because that is not a necessary thing, but thank you for voicing that concern. |

Hi, I've been battling the binge purge restrict cycle for quite a while now, although lately i have hardly purged at all, though i have definitely binged. I view it as better for my health if I don't allow myself to purge, hopefully also because it detains me a little from binging quite as badly when I know i won't be able to get rid of it later. anyhow, yes, i am sure the body absorbs quite a bit of the calories from a binge. I've definitely noticed if I binge/purge several days in a row my stomach is sort of permanently larger, like I gained fat and it all went to my abdomen. Good luck! this is so hard. |

Original Post by lilaioan: I disagree with this; it is energy-draining if you eat MOSTLY simple refined carbohydrates like white bread or pasta. It is not better for you to eat no or little breads and grains, especially if the OP needs at least 2500 cals a day. |

Yes most any brand of oats is very healthy for you, although I definitely prefer regular over instant because they seem much more full-bodied in my opinion. The nice thing about buying bulk oats versus packets of oatmeal is that it is much cheaper, and also doesn't seem so wasteful when you consider all the paper made to package those little 100 cals of instant oats!

Original Post by ezzied: Well the reason your post got questioned is because of the way you worded it...you made it sound like you were worried about eating oatmeal because of the 3g of fat, you actually said it "turns you off a lil" of oatmeal and that you're "trying to justify" eating it. Definitely made it sound like you're a bit afraid of oatmeal. But since this is not the case then no worries! just be more careful with your wording for the future! |
