Being an omnivore is also a choice. Everything we do is a choice. Perhaps we should be cooking meat free meals for kids considering the obesity rate is skyrocketing....

You probably didn't mean to imply this, but I'd like to clear it up....eating meat does not cause obesity.  Obesity is caused by overeating and not being active enough.  To OP: raise your kids how you want, but make sure you leave them with choices.  Do not lock them into vegetarianism b/c you think it's better.  If they want to they'll go full veg on their own.

No, eating meat does not cause obesity. But there aren't alot of veggo options at BK or KFC. I was just comparing that the "norm" right now is to eat meat, but the "norm" right now is also starting to be obese kids. Yes, these kids are also inactive and eat junk. Typical when parent's give more thought into producing healthy meals, they also turn off the video games and the kids go play.

as long as you eat a varied diet, you should be ok. but thing to keep track of until you get the hang of it is iron and B12. you can get plenty in a veg*n diet, but you may need to rethink how you eat, so just use the tools here to keep track until you get settled.

and vitamin D is the EASIEST vitamin to get. Go stand in the sun!!!!! haha. unless you are allergic to the sun, you don't need to take supplements. If you have any other questions feel free to ask

it depends how long you are going backpacking for. cous cous is very quick cooking. i also bought the dehydrated potaoes and added some of the powder ranch soup mix. its actually vegan. i also added some powder soya milk. all you do is measure out water, bring it to a bowl then add the ingredients and stir until its all mixed. very light and tasty.

trail mix is a bit heavy, but highly nutritious. clif bars are also vegan and taste great. my boyfriend loved the blueberry crisp ones.

i love leftovers for lunch. most can be eaten cold. i love cold pasta, although it makes my boyfriend cringe. i guess it will depend

any type of salad is great.

mexican salad- romaine, tomatoes, black beans, red onion, mushrooms... basically anything in a taco. use salsa as a dressing.

i also think that chick peas and dried cranberries go great together on salads. add cukes, broc, tomatoes, mushrooms, zucchini...

pasta salad! quinoa salad! bean salad!

can you tell i love salads? haha

I just came back from a weekend of grilling! My favorite was BBQ tempeh. cut a package of tempeh into 4 squares. marinate them in BBQ sauce, then grill them about 5-10 minutes each side. they get the grill marks and the outside kinda reminded me of grilled BBQ chicken. i ate it on a bun with all the fixins and extra BBQ sauce. would be great with grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, sauted mushrooms, avocado....

veggie shish kabobs are also awesome. marinate in oil and vinegar or italian dressing. you could even add cubes of tofu!

grilled portobello mushrooms are great grilled. to clean, wipe them with a wet paper towel. pick out the stem. some people even pull the skin type stuff off of the top. rub with EVOO and balsamic vinegar. grill about 5 minutes each side. tastes awesome with roasted red peppers and avocado mayo. (i just mash avocado together w/ vegan mayo, garlic and random spices)

just some advice: have a special area on the grill for the non meat food. not all veggos are this particular, but it is a nice gesture. also, use different utensils (tongs, spatulas etc) to limit the cross contamination.

hello! when i first made the switch to vegetarian i cut out red meat, then white meat, then fish. I felt it was easier to learn new things to eat gradually. I do not eat fish anymore for personal reasons. whether you eat fish or not is a personal choice. fish do have feelings and fish from fish farms are treated horribly. Some kinds can also contain a ton of mercury. Fish do have some benefits tho, such as omega fatty acids and protein. The choice is really yours. You can always cut out all overfished species and stick with more sustainably harvested ones.

now for the sandwiches...... i love grilled veggies on a crusty bread or baguette. grilled zuchinni, portabella mushroom slices, eggplant, roasted red pepper...... You can also do cukes, tomatoes, avocado and sprouts. use either EVOO and vinegar or your fav salad dressing. i think spicy mustard and avocados go nicely together :)

oh another thing is portabella mushrooms. i love them, and people say they have a more "meaty" texture. grilled is awesome. marinate w/ some EVOO and balsamic vinegar and throw on the grill. use as the "burger". Stuffed mushrooms are really good as well

i am getting awesome ideas....

B- veggie hummus, wheat thins and a small homemade blueberry muffin w/ OJ

L- left over stuffed mushrooms and peppers, stuffed w/ brown rice, spinach onions garlic and tahini. spinach salad with carrots and cukes

D- homemade veggie rice and lentil soup!

S- bowl of kashi cereal w/ soymilk

i've heard going #2 anywhere from 3 times a day to every 3 days is considered "normal" although if i don't go once a day i feel bloated

Hey! How about a big pot of veggie chili? i use 3 different types of beans, saute bell peppers  and onions, add a can of diced tomatoes or two, lots of spices and BAM! usually tons of left overs too. maybe even make corn bread with it. i like adding some brown sugar to the chili, or some balsamic vinegar.

Veggie fajitas? sauted veggies, black beans or refried beans, tortillas, salsa, guac?

freshly made soups? butternut squash soup is sooooo good and very easy.

i love making quinoa salads as well. add some EVOO and some type of light colored vinegar, and its amazing!

whole wheat pasta w/ veggies? pretty easy if you use a jar of sauce, or you can do a light sauce w/ some EVOO or water from a can of tomatoes

Make sure to use spices! they can do a lot for the dish with no added calories.

Yes, grew up eating way too much of it. veggo for 4 years and vegan for over 1 now.

Yes he does, but he eats what i cook, so he is a closet vegan. he sometimes surprises me with vegan meals as well :)

i agree w/ boiling it first. for me it makes it taste better. but i could eat it either way. its good crumbled and used as a ground meat substiute. i've also used it in stir fries, and my meat eating BF loved it.

the sunshine brand veggie burgers are amazing. soooo good. more expensive than the boca or morningstar brand, but taste better in my opinion.

also, try making your own. its very easy and you can pick and chose the ingredients to suit your taste. they will probably be much healthier than the frozen kind, too

i used to make a bean burger using red kidney beans, bread crumbs, ketchup, mustard, and whatever spices i felt like at the time. pan fry it and you are ready to go!

i like having "mexican potaotes" I baked it (or microwave if i am feeling lazy), cut it open, and add black beans, sauted peppers and onions and salsa. Also tastes great with sweet potatoes.

all of the rice and almond cheese ive seen at whole foods have had milk derivatives in them.... but it is a smaller store so hopefully you have better luck

edamame! you can get it frozen and already shelled... just heat up in the microwave.... delicious. can be used in stri fries or just eaten as is with a little soy sauce. also amazing with couscous or quinoa w/ other veggies

i second the peanut butter and banana idea. they are delicious together. apples and peanut butter as well.

perhaps you could make a batch of homemade granola type bars?
