| Weight Loss | no period? | Mar 15 2012 00:22 (UTC) |

hmm- its funny you mention this b/c I too missed my period this month, and no I am not pregnant. I have always been extremely regular. I've started dieting and lost about 5 lbs in 3 weeks. Its not terribly fast, I am not starving myself, and I have started exercising more. Its weird to think that this small change could affect my body like that but I guess weight loss can do funny things?
I do think since its been 2 months for you it would probably be worthwhile to visit your doctor

You are not a failure! Think about how much healthier and fit you've become!
I would advise you to log your calories religiously for a week or two. I was stunned when I started logging calories. I was eating way more than I thought I was. Its no wonder I gained over 10 lbs in the past year. When I am too lazy to log the entire day, I'll log up until dinner so I see how many calories I have left and get a rough idea of what I should/shouldn't eat. Logging calories makes me more mindful of portions and snacking and hasn't made me crazy. I've been able to lose 5 lbs in the past 3 weeks just by logging calories
I know exercise is important but I think diet has the biggest impact (and in my opinion, is easier) for weight loss. |

Thats great! I dream and fantasize about being a runner, its one of my goals, despite the fact that I am just not naturally good at it. I'm going to keep chipping away. I'm so happy that I'm making progress |

I used to LOVE celery with strips of american cheese on it, I ate it as a snack every day when I was little. If you use lowfat american cheese its not too unhealthy |

| Fitness | Flat feet and running- is it a lot harder? | Mar 04 2012 18:47 (UTC) |

Thanks for everyones advice! I did just go to the running store and they said my feet were so flat and narrow that they were collapsing inward (i guess you'd call this overpronating). It was so interesting, when he had me stand on one foot you could really see it. I am also a little pigeon toed on the right. I think this probably explains my lifelong issue with shin splints (which are usually worse on the right)
They recommended the Brooks adrenaline gts 12 shoes for me, so thats what I got, I will see how I do with them once these shin splints heal up a bit! Has anyone used these shoes? |

good for you!! whoohoo!
i too am bad at running but have kept at it and it gets easier. i started off not being able to do more than 1 minute of running at a time, now i can do up to 20 minutes in a row. my advice is to run/walk/run/walk and increase your running/decrease your walking as time goes on!

I am also exactly 5'6.5". I currently weigh around 155 but my fantasy weight is 130 (that is how much I weighed in high school). Realistically though, I'd be VERY happy with 140

Did you find you could run faster or further after you improved your form? By how much? I am just curious
Thanks!

Thanks for your quick response- I weigh around 157 and I'm 5'6" so I don't think I'm so overweight that it would be causing this issue (had the same issue when I was about 15lb lighter too).
Could be a form issue- I try to focus on landing on the balls of my feet but I find it difficult to control as I run and often times I can't even tell exactly where my foot is striking. I am not sure how the Nike Free sneakers would be affecting my form, but I'm going to check out a running store and ask

I work on monthly rotations- some of them are highly active, on my feet all day, and I work long hours. Other months are very sedentary. I notice fluctuations, especially if I have 2-3 sedentary months in a row. I do think some of the reason I am skinnier during my "busy" month is that I eat significantly less b/c I just have less time. In fact when I first started my job, I was on my feet and working long hours for several months in a row, and I unintentionally dropped 10 pounds. Sadly I've gained it all back! I wish I had a good solution for you, but I suffer from the same problem! I think the key is to focus on diet, and to take in less calories when your activity level goes way down
And kudos to you for biking to work, thats already a good step!

| Weight Loss | Tips Everyone Can Benefit From :) | Feb 22 2012 15:58 (UTC) |

One tip that I like is to not focus on things you cant/shouldnt eat, and to focus on things you can/should eat. Try to explore at the supermarket and find new healthy foods that taste good. Try to find fruits/veggies that you like. Stock up your fridge/pantry and just focus on eating those things (of course, be careful, don't eat a lot of high calorie health foods) but that trick seems to make me forget about the unhealthy foods. I also find its much easier to eat a healthy breakfast/lunch, so these are times when I try to pack in as many fruits/veggies/lean proteins as possible |

thanks for the words of encouragement everyone.
today i made a couple of steps in the right direction 1. ate a healthy breakfast 2. incorporated fruits into my diet 3. ran/walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes
i realized that yes, the entire picture seemed very daunting and its much less scary/discouraging to just focus on small daily changes that i can make. i already felt better looking in the mirror today. i realize nothing has changed physically, but mentally, i feel ok.
now i just need to face that dang scale. why is it so SCARY! i have to go get a physical and i've been putting it off b/c i don't want to be weighed |

i would 1. eat more calories- 1200 doesnt seem like enough. people on this site are repeatedly talking about how when they increased their cals, they lost weight. 2. try and get some more cardio in there along with your nightly exercises (time for a 15 minute power walk? how about some jump rope? that burns tons of cals in very little time!) 3. talk to your doctor about your pcos/birth control pills. maybe you are on a high dose and need a lower dose. i have read that higher dose oral contraceptives are more linked to weight gain (be it water retention, increased appetite, etc) |

i agree that you would benefit from getting a tour of the gym and actually maybe even a session with a personal trainer. my gym offers free first time sessions with trainers and yours might too.
i typically will do 30-45 min of cardio (usu stop at 30 if im running since its so much more intense in my opinion) and then spend approx 30 min doing weights and crunches. then 10 min for stretching. i only do the weights/crunches 2-3 times a week and never on consecutive days. thats just my routine
if you felt totally pooped after 35 min on the bike, then i bet you got a good workout in. i wouldnt push yourself beyond that point. you dont want to risk fainting on some elliptical machine and getting hurt! one step at a time! you'll work your way up to more if you want to get there. you'll get there eventually.
i understand the feeling of being lost, self conscious, embarassed at the gym. you should know that most people feel this way at some point! please dont be so hard on yourself. i am sure nobody was keeping track of what you were doing (or the numbers you were plugging into the machine) most people are wrapped up in their own workouts.
anyway hang in there! keep up the good work! -d |

his best friends are his high school friends (from like 10 years ago!) and since then he has been pretty content having them as his closest friends and never felt the need to make new close friends. he is pretty social at work but doesnt really make the effort to take those friendships outside the workplace. now that most of his high school friends have moved away, he rarely makes plans to go out with new people. (he and his high school friends still talk alot via phone/email/facebook but dont see eachother much) |

| Foods | Movie theater Popcorn | May 23 2008 20:45 (UTC) |

oh how i love movie theater snacks!! they make me so happy :)
i know this sounds counter intuitive, but i usually buy a box of chocolate snacks at the movies, heres why- when i have popcorn, i mindlessly stuff my face and dont even really enjoy the popcorn while i am eating it. i also convince myself that its mostly air and i dont feel so guilty eating it, when i am probably consuming 600 cals
but if i get a box of candy (i love the nestle bunch a crunch) i savor ever little tiny piece of chocolate b/c it tastes so good. every now and then ill take a little bite of my boyfriends popcorn to give it a salty/sweet taste. but seriously even if i ate the entire box of chocolate it would probably come out to about the same amt of calories, and i usually can only eat 1/2 a box before i feel sick of the chocolate! |
