Haha I think this is the biggest problem for most. It's like me when I go to the gym, I get there and just go on autopilot and do what I'm there to do. Getting off the couch and through the door is the hardest thing sometimes. What's the saying 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration? So true, without that inspiration that perspiration never happens, lol. |

| Weight Loss | Why did my weight drop suddenly over the course of the day? | May 08 2009 09:23 (UTC) |

Sounds to me that you lost a bunch of water weight. I'm a competitive martial artist and sometimes before a competition people will cut weight (for weigh in) and they do it by dropping water weight. It is entirely possible to cut up to 10 pounds in a day if you were ingesting diuretics (green tea, blueberries, kiwi, coffee to name a few) and working out or living in a warmer climate (sweating). Drinking more water will cause you to lose water weight too because your body will get rid of the stored water in return for the fresh water so if you found yourself suddenly drinking more water that would make an impact too. Natural laxatives can also have an effect; substances like dill weed, yogurt, beans, etc that lubricate your bowels can create a weight drop too. I would watch your weight over the next couple of days and I wouldn't be surprised if it returned to normal. I've heard of marijuana relaxing the bowels and this could be part of it for sure. |

Create a purpose in your training regimen. Find a reason why besides just losing weight...it could be that you want to run in a marathon or in a run for breast cancer or walk for a charity or anything else. I find it much easier to train if I have a goal in mind, and after a while you become addicted to the endorphins your body secretes during training and you just can't get yourself to stop training, especially if what you're doing is competitive. Personally, I'm a martial artist and I set myself a goal of participating in the upcoming tournament season and placing competitively. I find that when I'm doing a cardio workout and it's the 90th minute of a 900 calorie per hour workout I tell myself it's round 5 and I can't quit. I have a 6 day a week training routine where I do intense weight training on Monday and Thursday, Plyometrics (power training; kettlebells, medicine ball, box jumps, jumping pushups, etc) on Tuesday and Friday, and I do cardio (interval training) on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Sometimes it gets overwhelming and I don't feel like working out but I just go and once I get there I do it. For me it's a weird thing, once I get to the gym or out on the road for a run my spirit takes over and I just go, I've done sprints where I've done 8 intervals of 40 seconds and gotten to the 8th one and without thinking did 2 more. I can't explain it exactly but I would suggest getting a purpose and working towards a goal. |

| Weight Loss | What is your pant size? | May 08 2009 06:17 (UTC) |

Must be a little more padding in the rear...that's not a bad thing, what would be much worse is having a flat butt. Think the J-lo butt, I'm sure she doesn't wear a size 2 but that's what makes her attractive is the extra. Ask your husband, I'm sure he likes it just like it is...just like age, numbers are just numbers and don't always mean everything. |

| Weight Loss | 400 calories below my BMR! why am GAINING weight? | May 08 2009 06:01 (UTC) |

I'm no expert but from what I understand your age might be a part of it. I just calculated your BMI and it's 19.8 which is perfect and I would have to ask why you're trying to lose weight. In any case, at age 16 you might be still growing in terms of muscle mass and of course muscle is heavier than fat. That said, are you sure your BMR is 1350 calories? Do you walk to school or work? Do you work out occasionally? Are you totally sedentary? What is your day like? If you're burning more calories than you think and only eating 900 calories or less a day then you might be accidentally putting your body into ketosis and with the wrong foods your body will store any excess energy it gets (as body fat). To test this, see what happens if you cut out 1/2 of your carbs and add protein to make up the difference...your body doesn't store protein in the same way and so you'd probably lose some weight. I would suggest that unless you're a competitive athlete and are looking for 10% body fat that you really shouldn't lose too much more weight anyway. If you are active though and eating right you should gain some muscle mass, which isn't necessarily a bad thing although the scale might show you a little heavier.

I don't think I'll be burning more than 4000 calories every day, but apparently it happens occasionally. To answer a couple of questions, I am not really overweight...I'm 5'10" and 175 lbs as of today. I'm athletic as I am involved in competitive martial arts, though I was 205 lbs at Christmas time and my goal weight is between 160 - 165 lbs. I'm losing the weight both for aesthetics and athletic reasons. In any case my diet is good, I seem to get A-'s pretty much every day and I'm aware of the need for additional protein. I use protein shakes every day within 45 minutes after going to the gym. I use a shake with a banana, strawberries, low fat vanilla yogurt, 1 cup of milk and 29 grams of whey protein along with a bowl of fresh mixed fruits, which include strawberries, peach slices, apple slices, orange pieces, and grapes. On my 4500 calorie day I did the same because I knew my body would need it to preserve my muscle mass. I'm sure that one day won't be an issue. I'm in good shape and handled it very well but I wanted to know for future knowledge if it was unhealthy.

| Weight Loss | How many extra calories over our regular calorie intake are we allowed to eat in a planned refeed, cheat-meal? | May 01 2009 07:12 (UTC) |

Personally, I eat whatever I want but just watch the amount and the ingredients. For example my girlfriend loves fettucine alfredo and it's really high in calories so I just reduce the amount and add some broccoli and some chicken to make up the balance of the meal. All told it's about 900 calories this way for a dinner plate but still somewhat healthy and I can make the 900 calories fit into my daily calorie budget. I've only been on this blog for a few days but I've been tinkering (tweaking it) with my diet since christmas and have lost 30 lbs in that time. I've yet to become bored because I've found that it's just a matter of eating what you like in controlled amounts and including healthy twists. One of my favourites happened by accident and is just a chicken breast cut up and cooked in a frying pan with a shotglass full of water added (don't let the pan dry up) then add some chopped peppers (red, green, yellow) and onions if you like. Make a few broad egg noodles and add the noodles to the mixture and add El Paso Chicken Fajita seasoning. Awesome, it tastes very good and is very healthy. Mix it up, tinker with the diet and with recipes...don't get bored! |
