When you punch make sure make sure your knuckles are in line with your elbow otherwise you'll hurt your wrist.

I also suffer from bursitis. The exercises given by Kevinatthebrook worked wonders for me, but I also do halos and the shoulder shocker as I find them beneficial too.

Yes it was Stronglifts. I've just started 5/3/1.

Sorry OP, thread heist...

Interested in your progress/stats.  I didn't have success with 5-3-1 so I'm interested to see who does and why.

Well I've only been on it a week so I can't really comment on results yet. I don't strength train for it's own sake either. My main goals are:

  • improve my martial arts
  • lower my % body fat
  • reduce the effect of the recurring bursitis I suffer from

Strength training has helped with them all. Eating at more or less maintenance, until very recently, I've lost 2 inches from my waist since I started whilst remaining roughly the same weight.

I keep a log over at ironstrong under the same username.

Interesting replies---but no one has really answered whether the workouts are of good quality or not...

I just started using a weight training work out from Bodybuilding.com and I'm curious. I have never done any weight lifting outside of my highschool bball, vball and track teams.

If you want to build a basic level of strength go for the Starting Strength or Stronglifts programs, they're very similar and they work. So long as you stick with them you'll see big gains in a short period, especially as a newb.

I went from empty bar (20Kg) to 120Kg squat in about 5 months.

I have 3 pairs: 1 pair of classics and 2 pairs of KSOs.

I'll happily lift in any of them, but prefer the KSOs if I'm doing anything which involves running as they feel more secure.

If you're going to run or even walk in them a lot build up the time you wear them for, as others have said it takes a while to sufficiently strengthen your feet.

eta: I love them. My classics are almost worn through. I need another pair. If it's above freezing and not raining then odds are I'll be wearing a pair whatever I'm doing.

I can identify with you. I have suffered from depression for many years. I didn't get on with any of the medication, but I have found that exercise has really worked for me. Go for a walk in the park or the countryside if you have access to it. It really works.

Build up the exercise you take. Set your self achievable targets, maybe start by going for a 15 minute walk on your lunch break. I started by taking my kids for a walk or cycle round a nearby wood, or walking them to the park.

At my worst I hardly left the house for nearly two years, now I do martial arts twice a week and strength training three times a week. I also try to do at least one of walking, cycling or swimming as often as I can at weekends and I've never felt better. I still have to push myself to do it at times, but I know that unless I keep it up it's a downhill spiral.

The hardest part is starting, but as you have a supportive husband, let him know what you want to do so he can help you take the first steps. Give it a try, I sincerely hope it works as well for you as it has for me.

With your very low body fat you'll certainly need a calorie surplus in order to build muscle in combination with heavy weight lifting. This will mean the number on the scale will need to go up for you to appear thinner due to the greater density of muscle compared to fat. As a female it's almost impossible for you to get bulky.

At 16% body fat I'm not so sure you even have enough fat to lose 1-2 inches from your hips.

"You're still growing ....You may grow taller too."

That's why no weights. Even kids doing sports are not told to do weights till they cross 16. Normal kids best to wait till you are 21.

That is terrible, unfounded 'advice'. Kids can lift heavy, it does them good not harm. It won't stunt their growth. Check out this awesome little girl.

So you're burning 4000-4500 calories per day through exercise?

Either you're doing the equivalent of running a full marathon every day, or, I suspect, you may be overestimating your calorie burn a little...

If you cook your own food it can be just as tasty as fast food and much healthier.

You can have a whole burger made with lean mince. How does a 500 calorie 12" pizza sound? My recipe is here, I'll bet you'd find that just as tasty as one from your favourite restaurant, of course with the basics of base and sauce you can add any toppings you like. With a little planning and basic cookery skills you can enjoy plenty of healthy food with a balance of carbs, good fats and protein to fill you up so you won't go hungry.

I have 3 pairs and wear them all the time as they're the most comfortable shoes I've ever had.

Yes I get some funny looks, fewer now than when I first got them a couple of years ago.

I'm sure some uninformed idiots think I look like a douche. But then people who judge others based entirely on their footwear don't really have an opinion worth taking any notice of do they?

Walking is good exercise, better to walk out in the fresh air than exercise in a dingy basement. Exercise is a great anti-depressant too, as I think you've noticed, try to go every day if you can.

Well done for quitting smoking! It's one of the hardest things to do, people who have never smoked often don't understand what an achievement it can be to quit.

Talk to your husband, give him the chance to give you the support you need.

I think Smashley is over-complicating things a little. You've taken your first step in asking how to achieve your goal. Your next step should be to decide on a program:

New Rules of Lifting for Women seems very popular amongst the ladies who know here.

I've been doing Starting Strength since the beginning of January and have had excellent results.

I think so long as you stick to a proven program (this is the number1 key on the road to success) and eat the right amount of the food you normally eat, as a beginner, you will see and feel results. You can get into the more complex cutting/bulking later if you need to.

To add to the analysis of the pictures you posted:

The first is just skinny (and photoshopped) she has no muscle definition. To look like that you need to eat too little, wear a shed load of makeup and make sure everyone looks at you through photoshop goggles.

The second is skinny and photoshopped like the first but has lower body fat %, and fake boobs. She almost certainly doesn't walk around with that low fat % either, it was done for the photoshoot.

The girl in Tina's link looks natural and healthy.
