Weigh-In: 124lb....which means I only lost .5lb since last Tuesday. I was hoping for more, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised as I wasn't all that careful last week and binged a bit. But have been working out again and am about to go for a run. Hoping for 122 next week. Favorite "diet" recipe, hmmm. I just really love vegetables and fruit, actually. I feel like "diet" food is kind of tasteless and not worth it. I prefer real foor. Steamed broccoli, brussel sprouts, grapefruit, apples, pineapple, pears, zuchinni, mushrooms...the list goes on and on. Good luck this week girls!! xxxx |

I don't know about groceries, but I read a study that found that willpower in other areas decreases when you diet. So you are more likely to impulse buy--clothes, etc... I think it could just be true! Especially with the mentality of "I want a reward, but I don't want it to be food." And that could certainly add up! Anybody else notice that? |

When I was little I loved to eat dry pancake mix. I would take a bit spoonful of it....or mix it with water (aka batter) and eat it. It drove my mother crazy. Ok and I don't know if any of you have tried the vegan Smart Balance buttery spread, but when I was vegan I did. And, well....It is one of the best things I have ever tasted, especially the kind with Omega-3 Fatty Acids. I would never just eat plain butter or margarine, but there were many a times when I would spoon that delicious stuff straight from the tub into my mouth. Seriously yum, I don't even know why--it sounds disgusting! But if you try it I almost guarantee you will agree! Haha....serious diet sabotage right there. |

Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice! And as for night foot cramps I have had those in the past and it's terrible!! Glad to know I am not the only one out there. I am going to stick with my multivitamin and potentially start looking for one with more potassium or magnesium. I also just went off my BC which increases potassium and wouldn't have thought to put the two together! I love bananas so here's a new excuse to eat them :) I have been doing pilates/yoga for a while so I don't know if it's the beginner thing, but I will also start doing foot stretches. Thanks again!!! x |

| Weight Loss | What is a good breakfast? | Feb 11 2009 17:01 (UTC) |

Breakfast is my favorite meal! I wake up pretty hungry usually too and breakfast foods are my favorite foods! I could eat breakfast for every meal, and often do. Haha, who doesn't like an omelette for dinner? What the others have said about mixing complex carbs and proteins is great, and I also like to get a serving of fruit in as well. For instance, today I had a slice of whole wheat toast with peanut butter and a sliced banana (well only half of a banana, was running low). Other favorites are veggie omeletts, scrambled eggs with mushrooms and toast, oatmeal with fruit and soymilk (if you go for oatmeal try to make sure it is the slow cooked kind--more fiber, you can make it ahead of time and then just heat it up), yogurt with fruit and toast, and when I was in the states I loved to make a "faux" Egg Mcmuffin with a Whole Grain English muffin, a slice of low fat cheese, a Morningstar farms fake sausage patty (vegetarian) and an egg. With a glass of soymilk it was perfect and kept me really full! Yuuummmm! Now I am getting hungry thinking about breakfast foods! Good luck :) |

not sure i am getting your question. what do you mean, hold up your torso straight against resistance? examples of exercises i mean. if you have additional suggestions for increasing core strength i would appreciate it, after all that's why we are all here. ...and i don't think anyone ever said putting your legs in the air was all you needed to do to strengthen your core. at least i didn't :P |

in response to floggingsully (and to echo the others), the core IS important for just about anything i do. having a strong back/core muscles can prevent injury and if you like to hike, bike, run, etc... like i do, but hate doing ab exercises on your own, a pilates class is a viable and potentially beneficial option--depending on various factors of course like intensity, specific exercises, etc...

Vegetarian for 3 years....would have been longer but the parents weren't too supportive back in the day. Mostly for health reasons back then and almost because it seemed, interesting? In any case I wanted to give it a try. In the past three years I have changed my mind a lot and become a much more "passionate" vegetarian for ethical reasons. I went through a vegan phase for about 6 months but didn't feel as healthy and ultimately decided to incorporate what I had learned into my diet but not to be as strict. I do avoid milk and only buy free range eggs. Yogurt is my biggest temptation---soy yogurt is good but I love me some good greek yogurt with honey, lol. Always liked soy milk though, mostly because actual milk is sort of strange and very gross to me, unless it is disguised in the form of yogurt I guess. Weird, I know. Anyhow, I don't see myself ever going back. The thought of preparing or eating flesh literally makes me ill. I can't wait until I've been a vegetarian longer than I was an omnivore!! I was 17 so only 14 more years to go! haha |

| Vegetarian | A little vegetarian competition | Feb 09 2009 20:59 (UTC) |

Can I join?? I actually don't want to lose that much weight, but I gained a bit studying abroad first semester in Germany (still here) and am looking to get back to my formerly fit self. I am 5'3" and 122lbs but would like to be more around 112-115. But it would really be great to have a circle of vegetarian support, I don't think it matters what your goals are. I am also rather competitive lol. Since typing out my day would be a tad tedious, I'll stick to the highlights. For example, I made a yummy brown rice and lentil with carrots dish today....healthy, nutritious, and powered me through a run! Also, plenty of leftovers haha. Let me know! xx |

I also don't think it is worthless. I have taken pilates at a few different gyms and I have found the courses a lot of fun and quite challenging. The one I am currently doing is kind of a little different version than I've encountered before (studying abroad in Germany) and it's more like yoga/pilates but I like it for flexibility and core strength, especially since the core is so important for other activities I enjoy. And to second kaitdressed, the instructor is really important. Last year I had the opportunity to attend a workshop with an instructor who was trained by someone who worked with/was trained by Joseph Pilates (creator). Ok kind of a distant relationship there, but point was she was awesome. It was just chance and she came to my uni. BUT seriously when I learned the proper form and had her correct me is was SOOO beneficial. I try to keep what she told in mind now when I go and I think I get more out of it. So definitely try at least a few sessions with an instructor. And at the end of the day I firmly believe the most beneficial exercises are those you like and will stick with! So why not give it a try? :) |

Thanks for all the input, everyone. I thought it was a worthwhile question. I actually don't count cals anymore (gasp) but go by portions/servings of fruits and veggies, carbs, protein per day, etc... I feel rather liberated to be honest, but am still interested in diet/fitness, of course. And don't knock self.com too much. The cal thing might have been off, but there are plenty of good resources there like a nutritionist's blog I like to read for healthy ideas and recipes. There is a lot of misinformation when it comes to weight loss in general, I feel. Especially online!! I take everything with a grain of salt, including what I read here. But thanks again for the feedback! x |

To add to what the others have said it also helps to buy fruits and vegetables in season. They taste better and they are less expensive. Here is a good site about foods that are in season each month from the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/in_season/ Esting in season is also good for the environment since you can potentially eat more locally grown items instead of products shipped from far away. |

i agree with UD. actually there might not even be a relationship between the factors, as i feel like it would take a lot longer than a few days for a vegetarian diet to effect you physically like that. i have been vegetarian for years and i get headaches sometimes as well, but i don't necessarily think there is a correlation. maybe examine other things in your life lately too (lots of computer use?...for example) go veg! :) |

Original Post by hettyanne: Haha, that's because she looks like she belongs on the cover of Fitness or Shape! lol, seriously, you BOTH look great! I'm right about the same height 5'3" and currently 116 (looking to get to about 110). I know exactly how you feel, but just try to focus on being a active and healthy as you can. It is really hard not to want to look like that. However, it's their job to look that great! At least we'll never have to deal with the same kind of pressure to look like that all the time and can afford to indulge every now and then :o) |

Like the others have said, weighted squats, lunges, etc... will all work wonders. If you have never done deadlifts before I would have someone who knows what he/she is doing show you the correct form. It's easy to injure your back if your form is wrong. |

I haven't tried them (or seen them, just read about them on runnersworld forums)....but I love the Brooks I have currently, which are getting up there mileage wise. Let me know what they're like and maybe I'll look into them when I need a new pair! |

Definitely get a new pair! 3 years is waaayyyy too long. I agree with what the other people have said about going and getting your feet fitted---otherwise you might end up with blisters, shin splints, ingrown toenails (yuck)---any number of issues. I've had them all, and believe me--NOT fun. Personally, I got fitted for the first time last Christmas for my stride (I underpronate) and I got a pair of Brooks. They were pricey, but it was so worth it! I have not had one problem since I bought them :) |
