I'm dating a guy for 9 months. He's a wonderful person-- funny, smart, caring, supportive. All the good stuff. To top it off he's incredibly good looking and we are very compatible.
He's black and I'm white. I've never dated a white man and this is his first IR relationship. Our families/friends are cool with it for the most part.
A "friend" of mine is dating a man who is interracial (white and Asian). She's white. And very against IR relationships though she's in one. She's very against white/black relationships and told me on Christmas eve that I was wrong for being involved with this man.
She lamented the fact that my future children would have such difficulty because they would be mixed. She literally cried when I told her I had never dated a white man. Like seriously?! You're married to an interracial man. Your children are IR. Without IR relationships your husband and children would not exist but my dating a black man is a problem?
I wasn't sure how to respond. I just left it at I don't agree with you and I'm sorry you feel that way.
Anybody else dealt with people like this?
your friend sounds crazy. although its 2013 some people are still weird about ir relationships! i would love to be mixed i feel like they have the best skin lol. |

Boyfriend and his family. |

So I have this weird thing with families. I don't like them.
I like my family. Sometimes. I can only handle being around them for so long. I can talk to my mom on the phone for about 20 minutes tops and then I've gotta go "take a shower" or "do my homework" but they understand this! They understand that I'd rather be by myself.
However, I have this boyfriend now who is Italian. And I'm not stereotyping or anything but his family is LOUD and HUGE (I'm not talking weight...I'm talking like there are about a hundred of them). I've only met some of them.
I have a hard time being myself around other people, too. I am completely comfortable with my boyfriend now. Like so comfortable it's even weird sometimes, but that's just how we are. Except, if I am at his house (which never, ever happens we always hang out at my place) I can't be myself. Sometimes if I am just around him and his brother it's cool but if his parents are there or especially his sister, I'm a totally different person. I don't know what to say. I just laugh at what they say and don't say much else.
It's really weird.
Anyway, since my family moved away, I'll pretty much be flying solo for Christmas. I wasn't even bothered that I have to work Christmas Eve. I don't really care about being alone on Christmas, really. I have a nice little tree and I can sleep sooooo long. :)
But last night my boyfriend was like, "you know you're invited to my family party on Christmas Eve..." and I was like, "yea but...uh...no" and he just kept saying, "THINK ABOUT IT" and I know he really, really wants me to go. But I just think it would totally suck. I'd just have to be fake all night. And it's so stressful for me. I'd rather just be alone and sleep or something.
There's also the other overwhelming feeling of what his whole family will think of me since I haven't met practically any of them. I've thought from day 1 that my boyfriend is way out of my league and I'm pretty sure his family is going to think that too. UGH.
So...what is wrong with me! Should I go to his Christmas Eve party?
Should I go get a labatomy cause I have weird family issues? yes....
i think you should go to his family party.. that would be really rude to not go. id be pissed if i were him. just get over your awkwardness. you dont have to talk to everyone the entire time and share life stories.. just be friendly and introduce yourself etc. |

it affects siblings too! :( my brother and his fiancee broke up for a little while and i was upset. theyre working it out though and i think they sorted out what problems they had.
my sister (who is 5 years older) had a boyfriend who i LOVED!!.they dated for almost 2 years i think? and my family loved him, and my parents were friends with his parents, i knew his siblings, we went to the same church etc. they broke up and i was so sad. they were 17 when they broke up and shes 26 now and my family still makes small jokes saying they should get married. theyre friends now, and we're still good friends with their family. then she got another boyfriend who she dated for 3ish years who i thought she was going to marry. me and my family were very upset when they broke up!! they are on good terms though.
my parents says the same thing you do though, they were really sad when me and my ex of 3 years broke up. i miss his family too..its hard when you get attached to the family members also! :( |

wait is this real or a joke? i just read this entire thread. i feel so bad for your boyfriend to have such an insecure girlfriend. like seriously get over it. your w-h ratio wont change so deal with it. guys like girls with confidence. they dont like obnoxious girls who constantly ask them if they look good enough or not, and then dont believe them when the guy tells them they look good. so calm down. |

I also worked my way through college and worked hard to get where I am at. I have my bachelors degree, and work hard for my money. I hate to see my hard earmed money go to some lazy ass who prefers to sit on the couch all day watching Jerry Springer eating Bon's Bon's, but unfortunately some of it is.
My father is also pretty damn scared. He is a small business owner, is barely afloat since Obama got in office. Now Obama is going to raise taxes on everybody who makes $250K or more, my father's business makes about that, so he is included in these taxes. Problem is, he hardly makes any profit, and profit is what he uses to pay the mortgage on his 3 bedroom, subburban moderate home, electricity, etc. When taxes go up, he will go under, and join the ranks of unemployed, but how is he going to collect unemployment when he has been self-employed the last 15 years? I worry about the future. Now Obama has nothing to loose....
yup, and thats NOT going to help us. i don't see how people think it will. they think raising taxes on those who make more (except in reality, not all of them are making more, like your dad) since they can "afford" it will help. wrong. |

I find it very interesting that nobody is mentioning the horrors of Obama care.
Did anybody forget about the Death Squad? Do you really feel that the goverment should decide for you if you need healthcare or not? Who is to say that the Death Squad doesn't become corrupt and give only the ones with the most money heath care leaving the rest of us and our children out there to die.....
What about Obama letting the Bush Tax cuts expire? You do realize that that will raise income tax for EVERYBODY. Staring Jan 1, 2013, everybodies income tax will go up.
What about the fact that Obama is having them print money 24 hours a day, to pay our bills? How is that going to effect us you think? Think that a loaf of bread isn't going to cost $5 in a year or so, or a gallon of gas will never reach $8 a gallon? Think again.
What about Obama raising taxes on the rich? Hmmmm? How is that going to help us? Drive down the economy, lay off workers, ship even more jobs over seas, more foreclosures because of people loosing their jobs.....yeah, seems like a great idea to me.
What about the fact that our country was founded by rich people? The constitustion was written by rich people? George Washington, Ben Franklin, John Hancock and others were all rich. What about the fact that even having Obama in office is against the constitution because he is NOT a naturalized citizen, he was born in Kenya.
Yeah, good job America, you have succeeded in setting down the stepping stones converting the USA, to the USS of A - United Socialist States of America. Lets spit on God and drive him out of our society, take His name off our money, and out of everything that this country was founded on. Good work!
ugggggggggghh dont even want to think about any of this. it sucks. |

I grew up eating crackers for dinner because that's all we had. I watched my stepdad work 3 different jobs at the same time to support us. We couldn't get welfare up until I was 14, and we lost it when I was 16.
My parents aren't paying a single dime towards my education.
You had/have it made, Dreamland.
i am sorry you grew up that way. my dad grew up having very little money also. not that bad, but he paid for all of his school. worked HARD, paid for EVERYTHING himself, and got his bachelors degree. its not fair to make him pay for others who could have done what he did. like i said in my post, i appreciate every single thing that i have. i am extremely lucky.
(edit= odd thing is, after my dad graduated from college my dads parents actually started earning more money. they were well off even though my dad grew up with them having very little. obviously my dad didnt need any help from them until now. my dad had to ask them for money so he could pay for my sisters medical bills from having leukemia and getting chemotherapy for 2.5 years. he had to ask for money to keep us from losing our house. my dad and i are close and he feels like a failure. even though i know he's the complete opposite of that, he feels like he is. i hope he can get the oppurtunity to get out of this debt and he hopes that me and my siblings get the chance to work and be successful!)
watching my parents go through their savings, living off by paycheck which they NEVER did before is really upsetting. it's scary. my dad is scared, he tries not to be, but i know he is. some days when he is really angry he will let it slip out to me about how terrified he is. i appreciate everything, but it can easily go downhill fast. i am hoping for the best because thats all i can do. |

How is Obama directly at fault for your father losing his job?
I have gotten laid off from a couple of jobs during the Obama administration...both were the fault of working for asshats and virtually nothing to do with who is president.
You speak well enough...are you old enough to work or are you going to continue to be a drain on your parents?
i do not think he is directly at fault. but i do think something needs to do be done to fix it (other than continuing to put us in massive debt). my dad is not the only one who is going through this. i am not shooting obama down by any means, but i am angry. i want to see a change and hope there will be one.
yes i am old enough to work. i do not put any drain on my parents. my parents feel terrible because they wish they could help me and my siblings more. i reassure them that it is ok, and that there are people who are struggling more than us. i was lucky to have my parents pay for my classes at my community college for 2 years. they wanted to do this to help me. my dad helped my 2 older siblings with part of their college tuition, but they still have A LOT to pay off.
i am in a different situation than they are though. (i just turned 21 btw) i am applying to nursing school next month at my community college. i am currently a certified nurse assistant. i work 24 hours a week, while in school and i just applied for a loan to help me pay for my school. i will pay it off monthly, so i will not be in any debt. once i graduate from nursing school, i plan to get my bachelors degree online. (many hospitals/nursing homes actually pay for part of your tuition to get your bachelors) |

dude i know. im excited. screw finishing school. waste of time. im getting knocked up, collecting welfare and expect hard workers (who have already experienced unemployment an massive paycuts over the past 4 years) to pay for everything. OBAMA/BIDEN 2012<3 4 MORE YEARS<3
interesting, that so many of those crying over the possibility that they might have to pay a few extra bucks in taxes over their lifetime in order to guarantee education and health care for themselves, their families, and their compatriots, who have already benefited from 12+ years of socialized educations, are too young to have paid more than about a dime in taxes in their lives.
you have no idea what you're talking about. my dad had a steady good paying job. we weren't rich or even upper middle class, but we were middle class and living comfortably. the past 3 years, him and a thousand employees he worked with got laid off, he was unemployed for a long time.
he was in and out of 3 jobs. at one point my dad was working 80 hours a week. 40 hours at a **** job that didnt pay well, and 40 hours at SEARS. he did this for months to pay the bills. luckily the 3rd job is looking secure, but who knows how long that'll last. and not to mention, the job he has now pays him HALF of what he got paid at his long term job. he HAD to take the job. we are STRUGGLING to get by. there is an incredible amount of stress on my parents my parents and they are using their savings to get by. my parents cannot afford to pay for ANYONE ELSE except for themselves, me and my siblings. the only people they should be responsible for! my parents dont want their KIDS TO GO THROUGH THE SAME THING!
we are in massive debt and our unemployment rate is insane. something needs to change. im not going to continue to bash obama, but i want to see changebecause watching my parents and other people go through this is horrible. |

I'd really like to hear some explanations (other than "the Bible says so") from people who don't support gay marriage, if there are any on this website. I genuinely want to know why they think it's wrong and/or harmful.
I wouldn't call myself "against" gay marriage. I don't think the state should be regulating people's relationships one way or the other. That said, here in Washington, we have civil unions for same sex couples that already afford all of the rights and responsibilities of marriage. There is a ballot initiative this fall to adopt gay marriage and honestly, I don't get it. It will make no change to the legal status whatsoever, it's just about the label, which to me, is kinda forcing the issue onto the religious folks who believe that a marriage is a sacred union sanctified by God and all that. If we didn't already have civil unions, I'd be a lot more supportive.
Now, on the federal level, DOMA needs to go.
okay there are civil unions because people are against gay marriage. gay people deserve to have the same rights as straight people. i want to get married one day, and although i am not gay, i'd be pretty upset if i couldn't say that i was married to the person i loved just because i was gay.
i seriously do not see the point in being against gay marriage. |

i'm catholic and so is my entire family. although im catholic, i do not support all of the catholic beliefs. i support romney/ryan, but not about this. everyone has the right to privacy. taking away women's choice of having an abortion is invading women's rights of privacy. the government should not tell women what they can/cannot do. of course, i think abortion should only be done within the first few months of being pregnant. i doubt the abortion law would pass through the other branches anyway. i think their belief on abortion will cause many female voters to not want to vote for him.. although many females are against abortion, so who knows.
although i disagree with romney/ryan on this, i agree with them on many other topics.
A "right to privacy" is not the same thing as a "right to abortion."
As to the OP, I agree that one can (and many do) reach the pro-life conclusion without it being based on religion.
Science shows me that what a mother is carrying is a new, wholly distinct human life. Human reason, as well as my religion (Catholic), helps me to know that it is wrong to take an innocent human life.
It is my understanding that we all have free will, and so we have the freedom to choose to do harm to others. But we do not have a human right to do harm to others. So no one has a right to take an innocent human life.
Therefore, I am pro-life...so I would rather we focus on making those occassions where a woman might feel like she needs an abortion rare and on minimizing the suffering of those in such situations in ways that do not involve intentionally taking a human life.
pretty sure it is the same thing. thats what i learned in my class anyways. |

the link didn't work. is voting down making it legal for gay people to get married in MN? i seriously do not understand what the big deal is about gay marriage. i grew up in a catholic family...and i do not care whether or not gay people get married. (i care if is illegal for them obviously, but i think it's their choice if they want to get married or not) my parents also agree with me, although my mom sometimes is uncomfortable if she sees a gay couple kissing in public. it honestly does not bother me. what happened to everyone is equal? and why should anyone else care if gay people can get married? it shouldn't even be an argument. it makes me so mad thinking about it because it's SO STUPID. years from now, people are going to be so embarrassed that they were against it. |
