The Bible Diet Leviticus Chapter 11 1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 2 "Speak to the Israelites and tell them: Of all land animals these are the ones you may eat: 3 any animal that has hoofs you may eat, provided it is cloven-footed and chews the cud. 4 But you shall not eat any of the following that only chew the cud or only have hoofs: the camel, which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is therefore unclean for you; 5 the rock badger, which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is therefore unclean for you; 6 the hare, which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is therefore unclean for you; and the pig, 7 which does indeed have hoofs and is cloven-footed, but does not chew the cud and is therefore unclean for you. 8 Their flesh you shall not eat, and their dead bodies you shall not touch; they are unclean for you. 9 "Of the various creatures that live in the water, you may eat the following: whatever in the seas or in river waters has both fins and scales you may eat. 10 But of the various creatures that crawl or swim in the water, whether in the sea or in the rivers, all those that lack either fins or scales are loathsome for you, 11 and you shall treat them as loathsome. Their flesh you shall not eat, and their dead bodies you shall loathe. 12 Every water creature that lacks fins or scales is loathsome for you. 13 "Of the birds, these you shall loathe and, as loathsome, they shall not be eaten: the eagle, the vulture, the osprey, 14 the kite, the various species of falcons, 15 the various species of crows, 16 the ostrich, the nightjar, the gull, the various species of hawks, 17 the owl, the cormorant, the screech owl, 18 the barn owl, the desert owl, the buzzard, 19 4 the stork, the various species of herons, the hoopoe, and the bat. 20 "The various winged insects that walk on all fours are loathsome for you. 21 But of the various winged insects that walk on all fours you may eat those that have jointed legs for leaping on the ground; 22 hence of these you may eat the following: the various kinds of locusts, the various kinds of grasshoppers, the various kinds of katydids, and the various kinds of crickets. 23 All other winged insects that have four legs are loathsome for you. 24 "Such is the uncleanness that you contract, that everyone who touches their dead bodies shall be unclean until evening, 25 and everyone who picks up any part of their dead bodies shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening. 26 All hoofed animals that are not cloven-footed or do not chew the cud are unclean for you; everyone who touches them becomes unclean. 27 Of the various quadrupeds, all those that walk on paws are unclean for you; everyone who touches their dead bodies shall be unclean until evening, 28 and everyone who picks up their dead bodies shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening. Such is their uncleanness for you. 29 "Of the creatures that swarm on the ground, the following are unclean for you: the rat, the mouse, the various kinds of lizards, 30 the gecko, the chameleon, the agama, the skink, and the mole. 31 Among the various swarming creatures, these are unclean for you. Everyone who touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening. 32 Everything on which one of them falls when dead becomes unclean. Any such article that men use, whether it be an article of wood, cloth, leather or goat hair, must be put in water and remain unclean until evening, when it again becomes clean. 33 Should any of these creatures fall into a clay vessel, everything in it becomes unclean, and the vessel itself you must break. 34 Any solid food that was in contact with water, and any liquid that men drink, in any such vessel become unclean. 35 Any object on which one of their dead bodies falls, becomes unclean; if it is an oven or a jar-stand, this must be broken to pieces; they are unclean and shall be treated as unclean by you. 36 9 However, a spring or a cistern for collecting water remains clean; but whoever touches the dead body becomes unclean. 37 Any sort of cultivated grain remains clean even though one of their dead bodies falls on it; 38 but if the grain has become moistened, it becomes unclean when one of these falls on it. 39 "When one of the animals that you could otherwise eat, dies of itself, anyone who touches its dead body shall be unclean until evening; 40 and anyone who eats of its dead body shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening; so also, anyone who removes its dead body shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening. 41 "All the creatures that swarm on the ground are loathsome and shall not be eaten.42 Whether it crawls on its belly, goes on all fours, or has many legs, you shall eat no swarming creature: they are loathsome. 43 Do not make yourselves loathsome or unclean with any swarming creature through being contaminated by them. 44 For I, the LORD, am your God; and you shall make and keep yourselves holy, because I am holy. You shall not make yourselves unclean, then, by any swarming creature that crawls on the ground. 45 Since I, the LORD, brought you up from the land of Egypt that I might be your God, you shall be holy, because I am holy. 46 "This is the law for animals and birds and for all the creatures that move about in the water or swarm on the ground, 47 that you may distinguish between the clean and the unclean, between creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten." |

I just happened to read Leviticus today which spends a lot of time talking about how lambs, goats, bulls, pigeons and turtledoves are to be sacrificed at the altar. So it does not seem to be a vegetarian cookbook or way of life for the temple priests and his people. Of course, if you want to just go New Testament, there are two stories of Jesus (PBUH) feeding bread and fish to a lot of people which appear in all the gospels. When Jesus rose from the dead and was feeling peckish he did ask for some fish to eat. If that wasn't enough, by the time we get to Acts 11, we get this (mc)nugget: 4Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, 5‘I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. 6As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. 7I also heard a voice saying to me, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat.” 8But I replied, “By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.” 9But a second time the voice answered from heaven, “What God has made clean, you must not call profane.” That's how Christians justify eating swine and everything else. YMMV BTW, I am not a Bible thumper, but have been fasting and doing some spiritual introspection for Ramadan. This has led me to reading religious texts instead of watching TV (except House - on the sabbath we must rest, says the book). After reading a translation of the Quran (and appaerntly to truly appreciate it one needs to read it in Arabic, oh well) I decided to get back to my roots, and have been workign my way through the Bible. Leviticus is a tough read and the census reports in Numbers is mind-numbing. I am guessing that the Old testament won't start getting juicy again until after Deuteronomy. As an aside (and I did not read all the posts so this may have been covered, and if so, mea culpa) Leviticus was also one of the book that mentioned something about if man lays with another man as if it were a female that is an abomination and both should be put to death. I'm not advocating, just reporting. Edit: BTW, I have been on a two week self-imposed meat respite, and it is going well. |

I will keep magnesium in mind, though my diet seems to have enough of it from food. I am going out of my way to just not take a mineral or vitamin supplement or a laxative and find a mix of food that works. Yesterday I added ground psyllium husk, prunes and blackstrap molasses (found at my new favorite supermarket - the Al Osra in Budaiya). This morning in addition to flaxseed I also added linseed to my oatmeal. There was movement, but I am remaining vigilent. This is collaterally related to issues with fasting, so I do not believe this thread has been officially hi-jacked. Ramadan kareem y'all, yo! |

Oh yeah, the other brutal part of this is since I was a morning exercise person, I do not think I can do that without water. It's almost that if I want to exercise, I will need to have a modest iftar meal, wait an hour, and then exercise at night. This would put almost all of my calories into sahoor. Either that or exercise at 2AM and then have sahoor. |

Because I was a little bound up, I've been taking a tablespoonful of coconut oil twice a day. 120 calories in one tablespoonful, all saturated fat. Some research indicates it is a smaller chain sat fat that may not be as harmful. Now if I can only find blackstrap molasses in Bahrain, I'd be set (until I figured out some other food I wanted, but could not find). Finding enough room in my belly for water has been challenging. I wonder how Alaskan Muslims will fair in a few (6 or so) years when there is 24 hours of daylight some days during Ramadan? I think one would almost have to gear the fast to a different time zone (like Mecca). |

Oh yeah, as long as you are eating BMR calories per day you should not get into starvation / slowed metabolism mode even though you are packing all of your eating into a compressed timeframe. |

I am not Muslim but of another faith of the Book. I am fasting this year in solidarity with my Muslim brothers and sisters (and also since I manage the office, I do not want people to view fasting as an excuse to slack off). I set my alarm for 3AM and well overdid my first sahoor. I had a banana, oatmeal with berries, a protein shake, a peanutbutter and honey sandwich, a hardboiled egg, a tablespoon of coconut oil and there were beets, an apple, a pear, and olives that I could not finish. The more water you can drink, probably the better off you are. I brushed my teeth just before call to prayer (and meditated and read religious texts until sunrise, then went to bed for a couple of hours). I broke the fast with water, apricots and walnuts. Then I had a reasonable meal of tofu (soft, actually blended with berries), a salad, a sweet potato with molasses, TBS coconut oil. I went to bed at 9PM, and woke up around 11:30 or so. I drank more glasses of water and had an orange. My second sahoor (today) I went with the banana, some walnuts, oatmeal (berries, slivered almonds and flaxseed), pb and honey, tbs coconut oil, a pear and a hard-boiled egg. It is a piece of fruit and a pb&honey more than what I usually eat between my morning snack and breakfast. Sunset is in a little more than 4 hours, so it looks like I will make it for day 2. There is left over salad and tofu from yesterday. I decided to fast at the last minute, but had been planning a two week experiment into vegetarianism starting 3 days ago. Both are going well. I think you may start to adjust to how much to eat and the schedule. Also instead of spending all night eating and playing cards, sleep at a reasonable time. Have a small bite around midnight, and have a big breakfast to end right about the time for call to prayer. The tough part about fasting from adhaan fajr til dusk (yesterday fajr was 3:46AM so call to prayer / forks down was about 3:36AM, and sunset was 6:18PM - about 14.5 hours no food or drink) is juggling food, sleep and family. In some ways being single makes it easy as I can sleep at night (though it would be nice to be able to sleep during the day when the fast is going on, rather than at night when I could be eating, active and exercising). Most people will do iftar and sahoor together and that makes for almost constant eating for those 9 hours and a difficualt time getting work done the next day. Good luck! |

This morning's weigh in was 163.4. Back to where it was in the weigh in 9 days ago and spitting distance from 162.8. It is well within my maintenance range. Seems like the group dwindled. Oh well! Good luck spirit_seeker and thanks for sticking it out. Good luck to all who participated! |

Stats for Thursday July 29th Current Weight: 166.6 Goal Weight: 162.8 Pounds Left to Lose: 3.8 Percentage Left to Lose: 2.2% It has been a wild week weight-wise for me. The day before last week's weigh in I was at 161.8 or so, but was back up to 163.4 the next day. Last Thursday I got home from work late and ordered a stuffed crust meat lovers pizza and chicken wings from Pizza Hut and proceeded to eat half the pizza, all the wings and settle into a wheat and sodium coma. The next morning I lay by the pool for close to an hour and a half, did not flip. In Bahrain that equals sunburn. Then on that night and the next two nights after I had a slice of leftover pizza at dinner. I saw my weight go to 169.6 by Monday of this week. Did you know that one slice of stuffed crust meat lovers pizza has 77% of the daily requirement for sodium, and that 8 wings has about 80% of the USRDA for sodium? So in that one meal I consumed nearly 400% of my recommended sodium, not to mention I was at about 75% for the day leading up to that. Needless to say 10,000mg of sodium for a day and swelling from sunburn is a recipe for water retension. My feet are, in fact, still a bit swollen from either the sunburn or the sodium or both. Not 3.8 pounds of swollen, but some. So with a friend coming to town tomorrow (with a night of drinking to ensue), the feast of St Payday today (which was a hit) and only 2 days left to graduation, it looks like I am not going to get back down under 162.8 before Sunday. I take solace in the fact that I am within 2 kilos of my goal (my new range limit to trigger calorie restriction), but it would be nice to have another week to see if drinking water will continue to flush my system of sodium and whether the swelling from sunburn will go away. Oh well :( I did manage to bump up the levels on some of the weights I am lifting and the intensity on the treadmill. All good signs that I am doing well. The weirdest thing I may have ever seen on my body today was after my workout I developed these blisters all over my shoulders. The top layer of skin that I fried was thinking about peeling and already separating and then I sweated from the living sking underneath which got trapped in the layer in between. I just kind ran my hand over the area and the little trapped bubbles exploded with sweat bombs. Needless to say, more than an hour on one side in 110+ heat is too long without sunscreen on skin that has not seen sun since August, and ya rolls your dice, ya pay the price. I am still a maintainer in my book. It is dial it a little up or a little down to get to my target. My guess is that my "real weight" is around 165, but it may be another week until I would be able to get an accurate read. I will post some photos soon enough. Cheers! |

Stats in for Thursday July 22 Current Weight: 163.4 Goal Weight: 162.8 Pounds Left to Lose: 0.6 Percentage Left to Lose 0.3% Hello all! Ihope you've had a fabulous week. I have been super busy at work, but just read y'alls posts and love the positive attitudes. Despite the number on the scale, it's hard to say what my "true weight" is. When I got home from work last Thursday I was struck with a powerful chill and blowing mud out my arse Montezuma's revenge loosy goosey in my bowels an upset tum tum with attendant side effects controlled by a a course of imodium. My weight plummeted 6 pounds in two days as food did not want to stay in my system and I was massively dehydrated. I am also using an electrolyte supplement right now. I missed a couple days at the gym, but have been back the last 3. So maybe dealing with adversity is a good topic. I am hopeful that I can keep the long term big picture in mind. There are days I don't want to work out, or I do not control the food selections or where I want to accommodate the people I am with or where I work until very late. I am know that I am lucky and blessed because I can go with the flow, and when I open my eyes the next morning give myself a clean slate and take that day as the gift that it is. For me life is not black and white . . . there is a lot of grey and all the other colors of the spectrum mixed in. I would like to think that there is no particular wagon that I need to be riding or I am off entirely. If I hop off at one stop, another wagon will be along shortly. The other image I like is that life is a marathon, not a sprint. Even in a marathon you need to know when to pour it on and make a move . . . but most of the time you are going steady at a clip that you can handle. Find your clip. Find your bliss. So do you have big picture images, mantras, paradigms that help you maintain your focus? (If so discuss) If not, please develop and / or share your strategy for getting through the bumps in the road of life. ****************** Preview of 7/29: Next week we will be giving parting shots. Written perhaps, but if ya'll don't mind putting up your most extreme before and after photos next week, it might give us a chance to dance and crow and slap ourselves on the back a bit. |

Stats in for Thursday July 15 Current Weight: 167.4 Goal Weight: 162.8 Pounds Left to Lose: 4.6 Percentage Left to Lose 2.74% OK, I had a slight up tick in weight. It's within what one might call "normal" fluctuations. I don't really see it as a fluctuation as my weight has heen 167.4 the last 5 days in a row. Of course when I am "maintaining" I plan to give myself a 5 pounds +/- range - that is I don't get super serious about weight loss again until I notice I am 5 pounds over my goal or intended weight. In the unlikely circumstance that I am 5 pounds less than my goal, I may even actively gain weight. My personal belief is that if this occurs, the seventh seal will be broken and pigs will be flying. I went back to phord, and put my stats in. I measured my waist (31.5") and hips at widest point (37') and also gave myself the benefit of the .5 inch I am above 6'. It gives me an "ideal weight" of 165 when I put those factors in. So let's talk about goal setting. When I was 265 pounds in 2008, I just wanted to get below 200. When I got close to 200, I wanted to be 195. Then I finally settled on 183 (because it was easy to remember the kilo to pounds conversion as 83 kilo is about 183 pounds). I pressed a bit lower (to 176), but kinda burnt out on exercise with little nagging injuries. I went on vacation and came back. I started dating and found myself with neither the time nor the desire to exercise. Since I like all kinds of food and my partner had very specific food likes, I gravitated to what she liked. I don't know how I extended our dinners together to include eating lunch at restaurants, rather than packing meals and snacks. I believe at that point I had no goal. A couple of years and a couple of relationships later, I was back up to 223.6 when I came back to Bahrain from the states this year. I set a new goal to get to a get to a "normal" weight (at that point I was borderline obese again. When normal got close, the goal kept dropping, until I saw I was shouting distance to "ideal" - BMI 22. And that's when I started this group. I believe I will be thinking more about maintaining than weight loss on "graduation day". As long as I am in the 5 pounds +/- reference range, I will consider this eyar's experiment a success. I will be going on vacation again at the end of August. I want to be in my reference range when I leave. It would be great to be there when I get back. If not, I hope I have ingrained habits well enough that I can set and attain reasonable and achievable goals. So my lovelies, tell us a story about your goals. This does not have to be about weight loss, but could be about exercise, education, artistic / career pursuit, etc. Have a great week! |

www.phord.com/cc calculates your Basal Metabolic Rate at 1898 calories per day. You should shoot for that at least. Nuts, seeds, dark chocolate, peanut butter, olives, olive oil, avacado . . . good fats. High calorie, low density and good for you would be my answer to up your calories. I like your measured approach to exercise. Work out to your fitness level and increase intensity as you get more fit. |

The Prophet (PBUH) set up Ramadan to be a time of spiritual renewal and to understand the suffering of the poor. It is not supposed to be about having a huge iftar and then a massive sahur before and playing cards all night before spending the day griping about how hungry and tired one is. If you're in the Middle East, you're somewhat lucky. Accross the Gulf States, anyway, the work day is mandated to be 6 hours. Maybe take a nap after work? Though as a female, you would likely be called upon to prepare iftar, that might not give much time for that. As others suggested have a big breakfast before sunrise. Know your calories remaining for iftar and stick to that despite the tendency to massively gorge at buffets. Embrace the lesson of your faith that hunger and suffering lead to spiritual fulfillment and read the Koran when you feel weak. Take your strength from Allah and not food. |

Hey April The flaxseed ends up on my morning oatmeal. I do not know how many days in a row I've had strawberries / blueberries on oatmeal (made with lowfat milk) with slivered almonds and flaxseed. Also a hardboiled egg for my protein. Chrissy they pay me ok, but there is the human cost. My health is good, so I guess I can take it. |

A body has a way of getting used to a repeated number of calories, even if that amount is on the low side. If I plug your stats into www.phord.com/cc and put you at "lightly active" I come up with a burn of 1975 calories per day. Outlandish as this may seem, if you stay as active as you are, or even a little less, and gradually bring up your calories, you should not gain weight. If it turns out that you have been slightly over-estimating your calories, and in fact eating less than your basal metabolic rate - 1436 calories per day - your metabolism may actually slow down to adjust to obvious scarcity (what does a body know) and when you do go over that amount it (your body) may cling to those extra calories (e.g. by storing fat) to save for those rainy days that it knows are coming. |

Chrissy Sometimes I wish I was paid hourly, or that a bonus was somehow linked to effort. I am on salary, and I guess I am a good soldier. Maybe more than that, I care about the office that I am building and I want it to survive and thrive as long as I want to stay here. I prefer to be super busy while I am at the office, because the time goes so much faster that way. Having said that, if I could get by being super busy for 8 hours a day, rather than more than that and finishing up stuff at night or on the weekend that would be preferable. I have been playing with my online friends all weekend, scheming on our newspaper for Burning Man. I edited an article, made connections with folks who might lighten our load and supported people who mean a great deal to me. Overall I am pleased with how that is coming together. My fridge and pantry are full of good food, and my meals and snacks are top notch. I have learned that I may be a flaxseed snob, as I really prefer the bag of orgainic golden flaxseed over the non-organic, darker flaxseed I had before. This is good, because it will likely take me months to finish the bag one tablespoon at a time.

Good for you to not feel deprived. Giving your body a break when it tells you it needs one is a great example of listening to the feedback that we learn to ignore or start to not hear. Yo go! I bet you look smokin' hot in your shorts, and the bikini bottom will flatter you and turn heads in a good and confidence building way. Even though I would probably be turning heads too, I will not be joining you on that endeavor. :) |

I love "trust yourself" as wise words. I believe we all started like that, and then somewhere along the way we forget that or start to "know" otherwise. Good for you. I have not been logging for a while, but some of the eating stuff has become habit. Also since I pretty much prepare everything I eat, I am nobody's (e.g. a chef with a heavy salt hand) victim. I look forward to hearing how this is working out. |
