Don't go home.  Take up a hobby and do it straight after work.  A few years back I lost 30 pounds because my GFs friends were at our place day and night for a few months working on a project.  Because I dislike her friends, I ran a lot that summer.

Idle time is TEH DEBIL for losing weight.

If you are terribly worried about it, validate the scale.  Get three weights, (barbells work great) of known weight, weigh them and see if there is a consistant offset.  If so, adjust it.  Only use one scale.  Using more than one will make you nuts.

Also, remember that you are looking to drop weight, not just hit a point.  Figure out how much you want to lose, and lose it on the new scale.

I'm just looking for a SWAG.  I use the old standby of (age-220)=100%
I don't know how accurate it is. Have you tested yourself for max heart rate?

Give yourself another half hour after you eat to get some of that food digested.  Also, get yourself a heart rate monitor.  For training they are the greatest thing since sliced bread anyway.  Keep your heart rate under (and this is a very general rule) (220 - your age) * .60 at first, and work up to maybe *.8 later on.  It could be thatyou just got in over your depth.

You don't sound too big.  You might want to consider running or cycling.  Riding at 15mph sucks down calories like nobodys business, and isn't that hard with some work.  Both get you outside and away from your sofa.  Much better than treadmills, which I consider deadly dull.

Drop the calories down to 1500 per day, and start walking two miles a day to start.  Today.  Give it a week, and keep daily track of your weight on the weight log.  Watching the weight come off is enormously motivating.  This site has done wonders for me the last few months.

Ready GO.

Original Post by udokier:

I'm 40, 5'8"  and started this program a few months ago at about 195 pounds, at which point I am pretty fat.  RIght now, I'm around 175, with a few more pounds to go (i have a very thin frame) and I can start running again and God willing my knees will hurt less when snowboarding this winter.  Riding fat means more motrin at the end of the day in the winter.

I have no problem with the recovering skinny girls on the site.  The massive database of food contents here make it ideal to make sure that you are getting the diet that your doctor is recommending for you, and from all that I can make out the sense of community for this group is probably very helpful.

As to Men and their appearance,  anyone who tells you that women do not evaluate men based on appearance is a liar or a fool.

Don't freak out over tenths of a pound.  It just isn't worth it.  I often fear that I am obsessing by weighing myself daily.  ANDESITE is right.  Round it and log it at 152.  Think of it this way: You dropped a pound since yesterday.  You're doing great!

I like skinny chicks, and you look a little emaciated at 95.   Keep yourself around 105, and believe me you have no problems appearance wise.

Apart from that, you seem horribly obsessed with weight.  You should probably consider taking up some new hobbies.

Try using a motion control shoe or boots.  Also, I have ultramarathoner friends who swear by socks with toes in them.  Check your running store.  My friend Willy has lost more toenails than anyone and he loves them.

It was one of those number dropping from 176 to 175 things.  It's boarderline, for sure.  However the weight loss has been pretty steady over the last month or so, and I'm sure it'll firm up (or down) in the next day or so.  I'm probably going to reduce my calorie deficit a bit now.  I've been at 1500 or so and burning a total of 2500-3000 depending on whether I'm running or not.

I've been doing a similar plan, walking running or biking daily and eating 1500- 1600, which has me pretty deep in deficit also.  Frankly it isn't that hard for me to maintain.

Right now I'm halfway through my goal of shedding 20 pounds (185 to 165) and I'll probably increase the amount of calories to 1600- 1700 per day for a week and see if the rate slows.

Great job.  I have a close friend who I wish I could put in touch with you. He could benefit from your example.  Watch out on the cardio:  it can be pretty tough on the joints for big guys.

Weight Loss What is the ideal daily calorie deficiet? Sep 25 2007

My particulars are that I am 40 years old, 5' 8" tall, and started at 185 pounds with a past history of some pretty ridiculous exercise.   I have lost about 6 pounds over two weeks and change, and am looking to get down to my snowboarding weight of around 165.  Riding fat makes my knees hurt.

The weight has been coming off pretty steadily, but winter is coming up fast.  1500 calories is pretty easy to manage, once I shrink down my rice portions and give up french fries.

That is less than a pound a week.  Very reasonable.   Are you at your goal weight?

Is this a problem?  If you are comfortable with the lower amount, that is less energy into your system.  If you aren't hungry, what's the problem?    Since I discovered a lot of fast food is surprisingly low cal if you don't order the demon fries, this is getting easier for me.
