| Motivation | Who is jealous of the skinny types who eat ALL they want and stay the same? | Dec 10 2010 20:49 (UTC) |

I'll admit that I am jealous, but I also enjoy the health benefits and energy I get from eating healthy. The jealousy though is quite strong sometimes, especially when I'm hungry and depressed. My ex-boyfriend was a stick and ate fast food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He drank an obscene amount of Dr. Pepper and never moved or worked out. At the Cheesecake Factory, he always ordered a large main dish and an appetizer or pizza (adding up to over 2000 cals in just one dinner). All he ever did was lay on the couch and play xbox with his guy friends. He seriously did not have an ounce of fat on him! So yes, I was jealous. And in the two years I went out with him I gained 20 pounds even though I watched what I ate. |

I'd say have at least one yolk with the whites - that way you'll get some of the nutrients eggs have to offer - egg whites are devoid of nutrients except for protein. Or a yolk every other day? I've found that when I ate egg whites alone, I got hungry super quickly, but a yolk tossed in made the day loads better :) [although now I only occasionally eat eggs, for other reasons] Otherwise, your new meal plan sounds great! And the avocado is a super great idea in replacement of mayo. Congrats and good luck!! :)) |

"I will have eggs and an english muffin in the morning, for lunch I sometimes have a sandwich, salad, or rice and then for dinner I just eat like a lower calorie small frozen pizza. I was thinking that I'm eating too many carbs? I was also just thinking of replacing my lunch meal with a slim fast shake?"
Maybe too many empty carbs. Consider replacing the frozen pizza with frozen vegetables and a protein source (it can be frozen and quick). When you have rice, choose brown rice; when a sandwich, choose whole wheat without added corn syrups and such (read label). For breakfast, maybe use one side of a whole wheat english muffin top and add some extra egg whites or add in some veggies into the eggs - frozen spinach?. For the salad, use a bit of olive oil and vinegar, not sugary dressings. Skip stuff like mayo & cheeses and replace with mustards, healthy fats, pepper, hummus, avocados, and other healthy toppings. Overall, include more vegetables and healthy protein sources! (: And I would not recommend slimfast. Whole foods are superior. |

How about doing sports recreationally with a friend, then? And eating mindfully for optimum energy and nutrients (not specifically for some one health aspect or goal, just a general "I'll pick whole wheat over white for the purpose of those extra nutrients".) Or how about walking to the grocery store or other locations more often just for the sake of "enjoying the day." And adding healthy nutrient dense foods for the sake of "trying something new." Find crazy new vegetables that surprise your taste buds just for the fun of it rather than focusing on health, health, health. Or trying to make your meals more colorful with many veggies. Or joining some sort of dance club for fun. Doing this with the family or friends may ease any tendency to overdo your goals because now your goal is also their goal.

^ Exactly what I was thinking! Make you goal to be strength, endurance, and fitness! That way losing the extra pounds will be a by product of your new health-fitness regime rather than your central goal. (: |

Toasted Tofu. The simplest and quickest extra firm tofu recipe is putting some salt/pepper/spices on slices of it and tossing it onto the toaster oven rack. Hit "toast" and Magic! In a few minutes it's done. Then put any sauce/dressing on it of your desire and eat it in sandwiches, or with veggies. When I used to eat tofu, that was my favorite method! |

| Vegetarian | Veg*ns for the Ethics? Anyone? | Jun 01 2010 02:56 (UTC) |

I eat vegetables, fish, and nuts, and I would never eat any other type of meat. I feel that it is terribly unethical to raise livestock for our own pleasures. Disgusting. I can't imagine myself gorging on cow meat knowing that the cow died for me. I just can't process that. Same with dairy - eating cheese and knowing that somewhere there's a cow in a cage getting milk pumped out of it under cruel conditions. How can I enjoy that cheese, no matter how good it is? Although not a true vegan or vegetarian at the moment (bc of the fish), my diet is chosen primarily due to ethics. If it weren't for ethics, I'd eat lean meat because I do think it can be part of a healthy diet. The only animal product I eat is fish and occaaasssionnallyy cage-free eggs. The rest is plants. To me, vegetarianism and veganism does NOT translate to healthy or unhealthy. Just because you don't eat animal products doesn't mean you're healthy. I have friends who live off of cheese pizza and white bagels and white rice. But this is all my opinion for myself. Others may eat meat, and I will not comment or show any sign of protestation. Just personal ethics :) |

Consider motivating your hubbie to eat healthy as well - not for weight loss, but for pure health, long life, more energy. Start getting into health foods and fresh produce and finding fun recipes to make together. My boyfriend is stick thin yet he eats super clean and healthy - even though he knows he can eat fast food all day long and not gain weight (he's done that before). We went on this journey together, and now we're both healthier - yes, for different reasons, but it doesn't matter. The point is, that we both don't eat ice cream together and we both choose veggies together - and it's a great support! It really is unfair that some people simply tend to gain weight so so so much easier than others. I wish you luck and success on your weight loss journey! |

| Foods | Would honey count as an added sugar? | May 30 2010 04:13 (UTC) |

Yes - it's sugar and you're adding it. :) The only sugars that do not count as added are the ones that occur in plants naturally. Extracting fructose or cane sugar and then adding it to food is added sugar. Honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, etc are other forms of sugar that are commonly added to foods. "Reading the ingredient label on processed foods can help to identify added sugars. Names for added sugars on food labels include:

| Weight Loss | Measuring your food... | May 29 2010 15:49 (UTC) |

I measure everything through cups and tablespoons if I don't preportion (like flaxmeal for example), but foods like nuts, I preportion. So I'm wondering if I should even get a scale - I'm the obsessive type of person, so I fear I may start measuring every day. But thanks for calming me down and letting me know that what the label says is okay. I thought you may have found out that through weighing food, the label was off! Yikes- scary thought. I buy organic veggies in bags that have labels, and then when I go to the farmer's market, I buy similar items and know what a serving is. I also had this momentary fear, that like many, when I get a food scale, I'd realize that I was underestimating before. But now that fear is gone because I amm pretty darn strict and honest when measuring out things, especially the fatty frozen salmon with skin - I have to cautious - I do all the math to see how I need to cut the salmon do predivide them into 200 or 300 cal pieces. haha Thanks chrissy and durgy for answering my Q's. Hey guys, I don't have a food scale, so I was wondering: If you buy something that has a lot of servings and you divide that up into the number of servings, would that be an accurate way to know the caloric value? Or is the total calories in some bag/container off and you must still measure it?
And has anyone tried comparing calories in nuts by weight and by the CC counter? Like CC says there's abouut 7 cals per almond and abouut 13 cals per walnut. Has anyone tried testing this out? I should probably get a food scale and try it myself, but still don't have one! Thanks! |

Sounds clean to me! As Sherea mentioned, for me, this would be too carb-dense, but if your goal is to eat clean and balanced, I believe you nailed it! Some people thrive on a very carbohydrate-rich diet and some thrive on a protein-rich diet and others on a fat-protein-rich diet. Everyone's different, but I think almost everyone would thrive on a clean diet. Congratulations for the new, healthy lifestyle change! |

| Foods | Beano - Do you use it? | May 25 2010 23:32 (UTC) |

Consider cooking the vegetables (and especially legumes) longer. For legumes, "overcook" with 1 more cup of water into the pot to aid digestion. For veggies, steam/sautee them a couple of minutes longer. Avoid eating raw vegetables for a while and see how that goes (especially raw onion). If that's not the problem, then reintroduce them. Chew vegetables longer and slower, and consider having them with some sort of oil. Try cutting out certain types of foods temporarily. I know you said you don't want to stop eating the way you do, but just for an experiment! Maybe it's not the broccoli after all. Maybe it's the oatmeal, grains, legumes, sugar, gum, or something else. Finding this out might make you thrilled that your favorite healthy food is not the culprit! |

| Weight Loss | So, what's your motivation? | May 20 2010 22:59 (UTC) |

That's a very strange argument to me, but if you find such adjectives disruptive in reading other people's comments, then you have the right to let them know. Next time I mention that I went bowling with my German friends, I wouldn't want you to think that my interest in bowling had something to do with their German roots, so feel free to let me know that the adjective was unnecessary. Do you want our comments to become more perspicuous because they are too difficult to read with the additional adjectives? ...because I do not think that they are equivalent to writing "pinglafofoodabing." Anyway, this is very off-topic, but you brought it up and I felt like defending maxprella's right to use adjectives. I apologize to other readers for the digression! =X I am going to stop here...

Since when were adjectives not allowed on CC? Are we not allowed to say "red bell pepper" if the adjective is irrelevant? Am I not allowed to say "my German friends" because that's irrelevant as well? Do you expect our messages to all be generic? |

| Weight Loss | You know that skinny friend that complains how fat she is?? | May 17 2010 19:13 (UTC) |

This happens to me a lot! I eat very strictly, and would also have chose the unsweetened tea, but my friends and family always say, "you can afford those 500 cals"!! Then they say something along the lines, "If you're fat, what am I??" even though I never said I was dissatisfied with my body - just that I like to watch what I eat. And I understand why they're upset as well...so I don't think about it too much. I feel bad eating healthy food when they order fast food...but what can I do? That's how I eat! |

1. I want to feel good about myself - prove to myself that I have discipline and am successful at achieving goals. I have a terrible fear of failure. 2. I want to weigh less than my boyfriend who is more than 10 inches taller than me. 3. I want my family to stop seeing me as the elephant - that was always my nickname - I was always muscular+thick, broke things, had an explosive personality. I've finally changed my personality and I'm peaceful as a butterfly - now I need to be gracious like one - and losing the thigh and hip storages has really helped!

I think most women don't bulk up. How does your body react to lifting weights? I was a pole vaulter, runner, and disc thrower so I worked out my legs many hours every day. They looked nice in shorts though :)) nothing like what they look now, years later (softies). I can't find a balance for myself and my legs. I'm pretty sure if you work out your legs they won't bulk up though. Consider using the machines at the gym that work the back of your thighs rather than the front (at least that's what I would personally do. I'm by no means giving expert advice, just personal observation/opinion). |
