| Weight Loss | Gaining Weight While Exercising and Eating Right. Seriously Help! | Feb 26 2011 03:44 (UTC) |

This post interested me as I was also a D-I athlete. (10 years ago, though). But I remember after I graduated I gained weight and didn't even realize it until I tried to put on these cute black pants I loved and couldn't even get them on! UGH I STILL remember that--just shocked feeling. Anyhow, it's impossible to train at the level of college. For me, I played basketball and 2 hour intense practices with weight-lifting and of course all the walking that goes with being in college across campus--it's an insane amount of calories burned. I NEVER had to think about what I ate in college. It just wasn't ever an issue. But I gained weight quickly after leaving school and so I understand your frustration. Maybe it's the body just being confused, maybe it's eating more than you realize, especially when in training you need to eat so much. Anyhow, hang in there :) |

Ok to all the people saying that she has to change: what the heck?!?! Girl, that was HORRIBLE of your husband to say. There are PLENTY of more loving ways to talk about the physical component of a relationship. You said yourself you have been working on your outward appearance and THAT is HUGE. Good for you. I agree that talking with him further may be in order, but think about how amazing you are and what you are worth. Do NOT let someone speak to you like that. UGH! |

I also had motivation problems and I just needed something to get the ball rolling. So I told myself all I needed to do was log what I ate. I didn't need to *watch* what I ate, I just needed to log it. That was about 3 weeks ago. Once I started logging the ball started rolling and I have started to make changes in my diet. Boy I hope I can keep the ball rolling forward. Good luck to you! Also, this is "round 2" for me on this website. I have never lost as much weight as you (what an accomplishment!). The cool thing for you is that you know you've already done it. You can do it again. That is HUGE. Hang on to that. |

I hear ya. If you live in a city people go out for drinks/to eat all the time. It's just part of the culture. I am trying to figure this one out myself. One idea I had was nights I know I'm going out I try to be extra good during the day. On weekends I try to do extra long workouts. I suppose the obvious answer is to not go out to eat/for drinks but I don't want to give that part of my social life up. So I'm trying to see if I can just kind of work around this. I mean, this is a lifestyle, right? It's got to fit in with things like going out with friends. |

I went out to eat with a friend. And it had been sooooo long since I've treated myself like that and I just gave up on being sensible. We had bruschetta, I had chicken florentine and then we shared a desssert. It's anyone's guess on the calories of the meal. I took home half the entree, but when I entered everything, it still came to over 2,000 cals. Nice. I purposely read this post so I could get a little encouragement and I'm going to follow the advice of others--just pretend like it never happened, drink a lot of water, be extra smart about food today and have a nice workout. |

I work from home, too, and I get bored and eat also. IT's almost like a companion sometimes. Working at home is a real challenge when you are trying to limit the calorie intake. I wish I had some specific strategies, but the only thing that works for me is keeping anything easy to munch on out of my cupboards. That way the only time I'll eat is if I actually take the time to prepare it. |

Interval training blasts a lot of cals. You can do that on any machine. Spin class is also a great calorie blaster. |

In my opinion, only time will tell. Yesterday morning I got on the scale and it said 195 which i was EXTREMELY pleased with. Then last night I checked again (I hadn't weighed myself for a couple weeks, so I don't know why I did two in one day) and it said 199.8. WTF? So I don't know which is right. My plan is to just see what the scale says over the course of a couple days and even a week. My guess is it's somewhere in between. |

Yes, I do the same thing. It's usually more than 100 calories. I actually pondered this in my journal today. I don't know what to do--after a long day, munching on something--anything is in some ways relaxing. Sigh. I'm just going to get rid of the few things I bought thinking I will *just* have the serving size every couple days. Yeah right. My two main culprits: pretzels and goldfish. I had a nice raw spinach salad with yummy homemade dressing (sherry shallott vinaigrette) for dinner but I really wish I hadn't had the snacks before! |

I just saw this post as I was logging my dinner: spinach salad with a favorite of mine--sherry shallot vinaigrette. It's super easy to make: 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
Makes about 3/8 cup. I put it over a couple cups of raw spinach with chopped up egg white, toasted almonds, sautteed mushroom and sweet onion and one piece of crumbled low fat, low sodiium (23 cals a slice) bacon. On the top: Shredded parmesan cheese. It's a favorite of mine--the salad and the dressing! |

I think it's normal to kind of "fall off the wagon" as you say. But why are you freaking out?? Just get in a good workout today and you'll start to feel better. |

It works for me--I don't try and suggest my way works for anyone else. I'm also 6-1 and work out intensely 5-6 times a week so I need that.

I used to never drink water, now I drink 100 oz a day. Here's my schedule: one glass as soon as I get up. One with breakfast Sip on a water bottle in the a.m. One with lunch Sip on a water bottle in the afternoon One with dinner After I made it a habit, it's not too hard. But I remember when I started it seemed really unrealistic. So maybe just get a routine going first and then it will become easier to stick to? |

I made dal and it came out really mushy...I didn't even soak the lentils for an hour. I will try again--I also felt like it lacked flavor. The recipe I used needed some...i don't know...oomph in the spice department. |

I make a fresh spinach salad. I had a version of this at a restaurant and the dressing was amazing--a sherry shallot viinaigrette. It was so good I've made my own version of the salad: fresh baby spinach (as much as you want) 1-2 pieces of crumbled low sodium/low salt bacon 1-2 T of toasted almonds 1 T of parmesan cheese 1 hard boiled egg white--chopped into small pieces. 1-2 mushrooms (sliced) several slices of sweet onion 1 shallot 1 clove garlic 2 T of olive oil 1 T sherry vinaigrette
Toast the almonds. Sautee the mushroom and onion. Arrange the spinach on the plate. Put the almonds, bacon and mushroom/onion and egg white over the spinach. Toss with the dressing. Sprinkle with cheese. Dressing: crush the garlic and thinly slice about a T worth of shallot. Combine with oil and vinaigrette and shake. Pour over salad to taste.

It can't hurt, right? Although you are right--it's too bad we have to waste all this paper wiping off the oil! Why can't they just cook without oil to save us the cals and our eart the unneccesary trash?? |

Okay! CW: 197.0 on the button. I'm pretty happy with that as I thought last week's reading (196.8) was a little low and expected water weight. So to stay right around there is fine with me. Im getting close to a second major milestone (getting out of the 200s was the first): double digit loss. In two pounds I'll be at 10 pounds lost. I can do this in two weeks, the time I have before I leave for Madrid. Hope everyone is plugging along. And that's what this really is, no? Plugging along. It certainly isn't anything that happens fast (although I wish it would!) |

this is a hard question for me to answer. My dad uses a wheelchair because he is paralyzed due to a tumor in his spinal cord. He works out all the time, plays wheelchair tennis and is a very healthy eater. He treats his body like a shrine even when it has failed him in many ways. So on one hand, I am inclined to say "no." However, I do believe that our culture and our government have contributed to the "obese society" we live in. One example: pulling funding from schools (thanks, GOP) has forced schools to open up their cafeterias to fast food establishments and helped create this obese generation. In that regard, I would say "yes." Difficult question. |
