I completely agree with mrsdagle! I just want to add my personal experience if you'd like it. I started with 60 lbs overweight. Before I put on all of this extra weight I was a soccer player/runner and would train 3-4 hours a day. So my first instinct was to pick up and start jogging. For the next 6 months I did a warm up walk of 15 min, jogged for 1 hour, and cool down for 15 min (as fast as the average person could that had a surplus of 60 lbs). At the end of my 6 months, I noticed a huge difference in muscle toning and trouble "fat spots". But unfortunatley I stayed at a 5 lbs give or take of the weight I started at, and only very small difference in overall measurements. I have learned that jogging stregthens your heart and helps tone muscle. In my case it did not help me lose the weight I was looking to lose. I would agree that walking is better for weight loss. I would also say that you shouldn't do anything routinely! Change up your walking or whatever you decide to do. Your body gets used to using the same muscles. I've heard from several sources that you should change what your doing every 3-4 weeks.

Thanks to all of you who commented! I swear I am a total idiot about losing weight and calorie do's and don'ts, and eating more to tricking your body to lose weight. I still don't completely understand it, but I'm up for it! This week my husband has obligated me to take the week off of jogging, because he tells me he has seen a lot of muscle toning and sliming down when he looks at me, but he has some concern that I am over-tiring my body! I have too noticed that as soon as I give my body the opportunity to rest...I pass out in seconds, just feeling over tired. Again thanks to all of you! |

I am so willing to try anything! I simply started running, and kept running because I used to play soccer in HS, and was the best shape of my life. Thought I would go back to what I knew. I am going to use all the advice posted! Got any more tips? I honestly am desperate, and willing to take up anything. Thank You! |

| Fitness | Jogging and Breathing Properly | Feb 11 2008 14:03 (UTC) |

| I totally agree! Breathing in and out of the nose while jogging has done so much for me overall! I have ZERO headaches, I sleep 100% better, and while jogging I get more oxygen to my tired muscles that allows me to jog for 90 min. I am currently 67lbs overweight and I feel like I am 12yrs old again able to do anything. | |||

I started out 92lbs overweight, and now I am 62 lbs overweight. I need to tell you that because it doesn't matter how big or small you are, you CAN do it. I was NEVER a runner! My personal tips are: GO SLOW! I jog every morning 10 km (6 miles) along the river in my city, and there are nothing BUT skinny sprinters. You really have to concentrate on your pace, your form. It bothered me like crazy what other people must have thought of me when I first started, but now, they pass me and encourage me to keep it up. Breathe through your nose. Yes, you will have a stuffy nose, and or lots of snot. But it is the best way to breathe when doing such a strenuous exercise. Make yourself keep your mouth shut and only inhale and exhale ONLY through your nose (SLOW DOWN IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE NOT CATCHING YOUR BREATH AND CONTINUE BREATHING THROUGH YOUR NOSE ONLY). It will deliver more oxygen to your muscles faster! PLUS, you will slowly train your body to breath smarter during the day and at night. YOU WILL SLEEP 200 times better! I DO! Good luck! Estera |

Hi, I first want to tell you that you sound really comfortable with yourself. You take yourself really lightly. That is totally awesome! I think everyone at your age gets a lot of crap for their weight. Sucks, but its true! Just a question, are you wanting to loose weight for your family and friends or for you? I know a lot of people loose weight for their family and friends, and it DOES work for them, but not for me. I have had lots of attempts at loosing weight for other people. So, if you do want to loose weight, just make sure it is enough motivation for you to achieve it! 2 tips I want to offer you: 1. Make small goals, when you are starting out! Personally, I was 92 lbs overweight. I started at 255lbs, and now I am at 224lbs. I started dieting with unrealistic goals of wanting to loose 10lbs a week, and when that didn't work out for me I only let myself down, and built up more insecurities and doubts. At some point I started making realistic goals like walking briskly for 1 hour a day, and limiting my junk food. 6 months later, I am now jogging 6 miles a day (90 min), and having almost ZERO junk food. 2. Make yourself DO IT! So many times I have wanted to talk myself out of exercising or eating better. I literally had to wrestle with myself to "do the right thing" and stick to my plan. I couldn't be happier I did. I have lost 25lbs and it is getting easier and easier to stick to my plan! GOOD LUCK! Estera

Age: 27 Height: 5'10'' SW: 255lbs CW: 224lbs GW: 160lbs I know FAT ASS HU?! I definitely worked hard to get this fat, and I am definitely working harder to get rid of it! On a normal week, I jog 10km a day, and 50km a week. Leaving 2 days to rest my knees. Is that to much? I know I kick my own ass to get out there everyday, but half way through it, and afterwards I FEEL AMAZING! I wanna play! |

| I'm no doctor, but loosing 73lbs is doing a lot to your body! Periods can completely stop for some women during finals or under some stress. I would say losing 73 lbs IS putting your body under a lot of stress. Don't get me wrong, CONGRATULATIONS, I am just saying that...its kind of expected. Definitely go and see a doctor tho! | |||

| If you know you are going to get up and snack, then have some carrots or fruit. The only time I can remember that I have gotten up in the middle of the night to snack, was when I was 16, I woke up, and couldn't go to bed until I drank some pickle juice. I KNOW! weird! I wasn't pregnant or anything. All I can think of, is that my grandmother used to always do it, come to think of it, so did my Mom. Anyways, after I had my fix, I swore to myself the next morning that I would not ever do it again. Good luck to you. Plan ahead, if you know your going to snack and eat vegetables! | |||
