| Weight Loss | Simple question...why American are fat???? | Mar 22 2009 15:15 (UTC) |

I just got back from the caribbean and went with four other Americans and let me tell you... part of it's the portions! We were served macaroni and cheese in these tiny little cups that looked like salad dressing belonged in them! (At least in our TOTALLY skewed American perception.) An appetizer was one crab cake, potatoes were served in like 1/3 cup bowl and cheese was NO where to be found. Portion size definitely makes a difference. We go overboard here in the states. |

I've lost about 10 pounds so far and I definitely notice it in my wrists more than anything else. I constantly find myself wrapping my thumb and middle finger around my forearm and they touch! It's (embarrassingly) intriguing. |

I don't have an answer, but I hear ya! I'm 22 and 10-15 pounds from my next goal... might go lower if I feel like it but we'll see. Some of my friends are still in college and others don't have jobs yet... it's hard to balance being healthy with having a life! |

Your weight can fluctuate even several pounds in one day, depending on when you weigh yourself. Did you weigh yourself at exactly the same time of day? Weighing in the morning on Wednesday and in the evening on Saturday can make a big difference. Are you closer to your period? Do you weight train? Both of these things can make you retain water. Your 1.5 gain is likely just a fluctuation in your weight that can happen any day. |

I'm not alone! I went to the doctor yesterday afternoon ("It's a virus, but it's not the flu... wait til your fever is broken for 24 hours... lots of rest... blah....") But the worst part is that they weigh you in! Uh, I've only weighed once in like eight weeks... I don't really WANT to know because seeing those teeeeeny little fluctuations would drive me crazy. So while standing there on a scale (that isn't the one I've been weighing on... in nike shox... and a hoodie... and jeans) I contemplated how much my clothes must weight and looked out the window so the nurse could just do her thing and I wouldn't have to look at it. And of COURSE then she said it out LOUD so I knew I went up .8 lb since the last time I weighed. Frustrating! (Small rant. I'm going back to work today after two days and my fever has finally been gone for 24 hours, so I'm hoping that all is well and I might finally make it to the gym tonight. If I can work out today, tomorrow and Friday I'll still have five days this week. Could be worse. Everybody hang in there!! |

| Weight Loss | Losing a Pound a Day? Question | Feb 22 2009 15:51 (UTC) |

I think there's a few things to remember about this... 1. The contestants on the show are working under very close supervision of a doctor, even the ones at home without a trainer are I'm sure. Those doctors monitor their progress and health while they're losing weight. Even those on CC who work with a doctor probably check in with them less frequently. 2. (And maybe most importantly) The contestants on the show are often severely obese. That gives them much more weight to lose than many people who are trying to lose weight. When you have more weight to lose, you will notice that it may come off more quickly (at first) than someone who is overweight and may need to lose only 20 pounds to get into a health weight range. For example, I could eat 1400-1800 calories a day and work out that much but I would not be losing that much weight that quickly because my starting weight was 168. 3. No weight loss plan is perfect. Follow up with some of the contestants on the show and see how many of them have relapsed and gained back weight. MANY of them do... and that's not to belittle their hard work or progress. Goodness knows many of us slip, too. But a plan like you see on the show offers a lot of weight loss very quickly. Even if you're working with a doctor and have a lot of weight to loss, you still need to lose it slowly and in moderation to really keep it off. So the verdict (my verdict at least |

I've been at this for about 6 weeks now and started out at 168. I'm not weighing, but I notice changes in how my clothes are fitting. I don't feel like I really LOOK any different though. Well last week, a friend who I only see once a week asked me if I had been working out. Then yesterday someone at work who's been out 2-3 weeks said it looks like I'd lost weight. Feels pretty good! It makes me curious to know how much, if any, I've lost. : ) I wonder! It also makes me excited to think that I could look even more different when I go out of town in 3 and a half weeks... |

I notice the gain too but, like gadzooks said, I think it's water retention more than actual gain. It's harder to keep on track with food, too, since a lot of us girls get cravings but if you hang in there it always feels better the next week when the numbers go down again. |

Well I'm not alone so that's good! I have a scale in the house but I don't trust it. I do trust the one in the gym... which I could get on 5-6 times a week if I wanted to... I just don't. I started off in the overweight column, though not by too much, and I'm trying to get back to healthy for now. I'm taking the steps that I can right now and I guess I don't feel like weighing is gonna make the weight come off any faster than it went on. However, my jean skirt that in January would barely even fit over my hips much less zip (I started a 10/12, that suckers a 6) ... it zipped yesterday! Now I just need it to look how I want it to! |
