The Lounge census form filled out May 20 2010

Filled it out- mailed it in- received several phone calls asking for clarification on some points.

Annoying as heck!  The phone workers are slow and reading directly from a script.  They can not and will not vary from that script.  If you ask a question that isn't covered by that script, they will apologize and start over; explaining at length how this must be done in the proper order.  I tested several different workers- by hanging up on the previous worker.  After awhile it became amusing (as I let the frustration go).  One poor fellow could barely read- there was a noticeable pause between each word- just like my kid starting out with her reading skills.  Took days for me to work up the  patience to make it all the way through!

The Lounge Animal Testing/Experimentation May 20 2010

Not that I'm keen on the idea of somebody's "Rover" ending up in a lab- but- the majority of the "pets" that end up in the animal shelters do end up being euthanized.  It seems more "humane", IMO, to use these animals rather than to specifically breed animals just for that purpose.  Millions are picked up, held for a few days, destroyed, and put in landfills.  I can not see the reason for also having puppy (kitten, rabbit...) farms to produce more of these animals for testing.

As for it being more emotionally difficult for the animal itself if it has been a pet already, my darling pooch was adopted from the pound.  She was was emotional wreck from just being in there!  Her previous owners left her there when they moved- pure torture for her!  A reputable lab will screen for animals that are best suited for the position they will placed in- the nervous type are generally destined for the needle and dump.

All I know is that it's far more common for people with kids to treat those who choose not to have them with disdain/condescension than the reverse.  I was driven away from a volunteer organization because I got to the point where I simply couldn't deal with the lack of respect anymore.  If you weren't a mommy (or at least trying your darnedest to become one), they treated you like a kid.

Funny, it's the kidless athiests who I find the most condescending.

Our 7 month old German Shepherd is SUPPOSED to sleep on a mat by the backdoor.  He KNOWS he isn't supposed to wander around the house at night.  So he tries to be real sneaky.  We caught him, though, when he went into the bathroom and took the end of the roll of toilet paper and took it back out to his mat to chew on.  It was like a glorious, never ending supply of chew stuff.  It made a much cozier bed, too.  Not sure if that little trick means he's smart or not though!  Good thing he can't open the bathroom door that we always keep shut now.

Ours makes a handy dust collector on the counter.  It was a gift.  We don't even drink coffee.  The little cups made terrible hot chocolate and we resorted to just using it to heat the water to add our own mix.  THAT took longer than just using a pan on the stove.  So now it sits.  I dust.  It sits.  ...but 'twas a gift.....

We found our female cat about a month after she went missing.  She was totally an indoor cat.  She managed to survive by living off of a caribou carcass that was down in a ditch about a mile from the house.  Have no idea where the caribou came from, they don't live around here- but glad for her sake.

At this point things should only start improving.  If you notice any INCREASE in swelling- go back in immediately.

On a side note- don't eat cream of wheat for awhile. It is hard to flush out and I believe is what caused mine to re-swell and require antibiotics!

Good luck.

I still feel that it is silly to say working mothers are working harder because they have two jobs.  How are they doing both jobs at the same time?

I recently listened to a lecture on multi-tasking, which boiled down to- when we often think we are doing two things at the same time neither is getting the fullest of attention it probably merits. (exceptions..exceptions..I know)

Anyway... my point, each woman has exactly the same number of hours to work during the day.  How she chooses to spend those hours working would determine how hard she works.  If I had a slow office job while my children were in daycare- then came home to do housework, I couldn't really claim to be hard working compared to a SAHM with a couple of toddlers and a volunteer schedule- could I?  The second would still be doing all the same housework at night.

For all the trouble makers who like to make people feel badly about themselves on this site (self-esteem issues women) I am not trying to justify my choices.  I am quite busy, satisfied and happy.  I am irritated, however, when people try to elevate themselves by lowering my choices.

The homeschool question was answered well by somebody else, so "ditto" to that reply.

My OPINION-

I feel bad for mothers who wish they could stay home, but for any number of reasons, can't.

I feel bad for children who have at least one parent who COULD stay home, but would rather not.

I have children who are school age, and one who is still a toddler.  We home school however- so there is no chance of my getting lazy.  I can see the wisdom in a mother getting at least a part time job while her child/ children are in school- providing that the job does not interfere or take precedence with her (sometimes his) ability to be available when needed. I admittedly was bored when I had only one young child at home, a little less bored when the second came along.  However, it was a small sacrifice to pay to ensure that my kids have the best upbringing that I can offer.

I think it is ridiculous for working mothers to assuage any guilt they may feel by trying to put down SAHM's by outright saying that they do everything a SAHM does, plus work.  Obviously, if you are a working mother (away from the home) you are NOT with your children.  Your children are spending the bulk of their waking hours at day care, or with a babysitter.  Yes, working mothers work hard- I am simply irritated when they feel it necessary to elevate themselves by trying to lower the SAHM.

I also feel that it is ridiculous when I see a woman without children repeatedly dishing out advice to mothers about ANY parenting subject.

To those who feel bugged or offended by religious answers, I have a question. Why is it that it is only okay to answer the question if you don't mention God or religion? If someone's religion answers those questions for them, and brings them peace in this life, what is wrong with that? What is the difference between deriving ones answers from science, books, mythology, media, your own studies, or religion?

The reason I posted the web link was not to try and proselytize. But when the original poster was asking her questions, they were the exact questions that are addressed in the video clips at that link. It shows many people, the world over, asking those same questions, questions that I can't imagine not having answers to. What a frustrating existence this life would be! I feel that the link I listed provides answers. The video clips there explain my own beliefs well, better than I could have written them out myself, so I just posted the link.

So, sorry if I offended anyone, I just meant to join the discussion with my honest answers & thoughts.

I enjoyed the link mountainmama- thank you VERY much for posting it!  I am sure that there were more people than just I who are grateful to see such postings as yours.  Many of us just don't reply as often as we probably should, due to the negative remarks generally made after somebody bears testimony of God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ.  It is hard to find the right combination of thick skin and being outspoken.  Your contribution was perfect!

Loved your thread, anewdawn.  I have had the same regrets- after telling friends about CC.  I have yet to understand why so many people on a support site feel that it is fine to trash an entire group of people and their beliefs on such a regular basis.  The "don't read it, if it offends you" advice is silly since the insults often appear out of nowhere.  More and more, I have felt compelled to let my "voice" be heard in those threads anyway- just so folks can start to realize that their opinion isn't the only one out there.  I have greatly enjoyed seeing others on the forums the last couple of days taking a stand, even just to say that some of comments of others are deliberately rude, blasphemous, and unnecessary.  Thanks!

here's my question to ms jesus-defender: If you have to "know jesus" and "love jesus" and he's the "only path to god" what chance do people have who have NEVER HEARD OF HIM? Like people who live out in the jungle and never meet anyone outside their own tribe? That doesn't make any sense now does it? why would god make it impossible for these people to ever get to the pearly gates?

Of course a loving God has this all figured out.  Our Church teaches just what is in store for these people, though I know that many Churches do not have a satisfactory answer to this question. It is most certainly NOT impossible for them to reach the "pearly gates".

ANYWAY- I have been very busy, and will continue to be so, this week- I would have loved to be in on this thread from the start.  However, I do not have the time to devote to reading all of the pages.  So here is my $0.02.

Nonbelievers generally know that believers are sensitive to remarks made about Jesus Christ.  He is important to them(me) in a very real and dear way.  Nonbelievers do not have to understand this connection to be aware that they are seriously offending other individuals by their derogatory remarks about Him(Christ).  Please forgive the following comparison, as I am not trying to offend- just enlighten.  If somebody came on here and made very poor jokes about the homosexual community and its behavior in general- a good deal of people would be offended, whether or not they were a part of the community.  The jokes (and I am not saying that there have never been any) would be in poor taste and would be offensive.  When nonbelievers make disrespectful cracks about God and his followers, they are not only amusing themselves publicly in a very distasteful (to many) way- they are also often purposefully putting down those who to try to center their lives around their belief in God and a Savior for all mankind.  You do not have to share in the beliefs in order to act respectful to other humans.  It is often said on these threads how awful Christians behave, but these types of threads aren't exactly an advertisement for the kind, humane behavior of atheists.
