"Murder with a cause" is a really bad way to put it. "murder" is wrongful killing by definition.

Thank you for all your thoughtful replies! I especially like the advice to tackle small challenges at first. I haven't been doing anything physical, and adding any sort of exercise to my day could make the difference between holding steady and (very slow) weight loss. I like to dance with my Ipod.

By the way, despite the ambiguous name and the cat picture, I'm a guy, not a girl.

Sarah ch: Are you sure you mean boiling and grilling? not broiling?

Well, boiling may be a bit plain, but simmering in some sort of broth (braising) can be delicious. One advantage over dry cooking is that it doesn't matter as much if it's a bit overcooked because of the moist cooking method.

Original Post by chrissy1988:

1. Sweet or salty?

Salty! Does noone prefer salt??

2. Which ingredient(s) do you use most?

Stuff I can find in a convenience store.

3. What’s the cooking sound you most love?

Hamburgers sizzling

4. What’s your favorite cooking smell?

Chicken braising in the slow cooker.

5. What are the qualities you most admire in a dish?

Simplicity and yumminess

6. What is your most favourite possession in the kitchen?

My chef's knife. And I asked for a new one for Christmas! I love knives:)

7. What is a dirty word in your kitchen?

Alcohol

8. What are you afraid to do in the kitchen?

Deep fry things or make caramel. Anything where I heat something above the boiling point.

9. What won’t you eat?

Veal. And I try to avoid "cruelty eggs".

10. Have you ever lost your appetite for a food you once loved?

When I was a kid I used to drench my rice in soy sauce, and then I went through a phase where I found the stuff nauseating. I like soy now, though.

11. Are there any foods that you now love that you once disliked?

White turkey meat. I never used to like it but now I like both.

12. If you could choose one historical or living cook to make you a meal right now, who and what would it be?

Laura Calder, who does the French show on Food Network Canada. I think I'm in love.:)

13. Which food website/blog would you be lost without?

All I know is CC

14. Who are your favorite cookbook authors/food writers?

Julia Child taught me how to cook. Mastering the Art of French Cooking is good for advanced cooks, but it also explains the basics very well. Too bad it's all old-fashioned French Food - there aren't that many recipes that aren't heavy on the butter and cream or the wine and cognac.

15. What is your favorite food-related word?

Gobble

16. What’s your favorite food-shopping errand or journey?

I avoid food shopping, which is why I end up trying to figure what to eat with what I can get at the local convenience store.

17. To which country would you move to for the food? What dish in particular appeals to you?

I'm still in love with French food. I've been there and I loved it. Maybe somebody can cook me some Boeuf Bourgignon which I can never cook cause I won't have wine in the house.

18. What’s your food poison?

Animal Fat. Butter is the best...

19. What’s your standard outfit in the kitchen?

People have a cooking wardrobe? Really?

20. You wish to die with what in your stomach?

Chicken and dumplings

21. If heaven exists, what do you hope they have on the menu?

profiteroles aux chocolat (cream puffs stuffed with ice cream and covered in chocolate sauce) oeufs sur cheval (yummy burger with a fried egg on top), and stewed chicken.

22. If you came back as a fruit or a vegetable, which one would it be (and why)?

Brussels sprouts because they have a low glycemic index and are unique!

23. What are you craving right now?

After all that? Probably the burgers. I really should go shopping!

It sounds like you're adapting sole meuniere, where the butter you fry it in goes to form a sauce (with some lemon juice added). Since you aren't doing the butter sauce thing, you don't need so much oil.

Scales are often several pounds off.

But I think what you're mainly up against is the fact that a 10 pound weight loss isn't that noticeable. "Listen" to your belt - it's telling you the true story.

jenningermany wins! Her casserole with eggplant and tomato sounds like just the thing. I didn't mention it but I have a spare tomato, an I think it would keep the dish from being bland.

I don't have fresh basil so I think I'll use dried "herbes de Provence" blend.

Thanks everyone!

EVOO = extra virgin olive oil. Rachel Rae uses it all the time on her cooking show Thirty Minute Meals.

I prefer regular olive oil... these are good suggestions, keep em coming!

Weight Loss Whats A Good Goal For Me? Oct 19 2009

A healthy body mass index (BMI) is anything from 20 to 25. Over 25 health problems can start.

At 6'5", a BMI of 25 would put you at 210 pounds. That's fairly heavy, but it will work with your very tall frame. 210 pounds would be your maximum healthy weight

EDIT: PS my BMI is 33 so I can sympathise!

Second Edit: You asked how many calories to consume in another thread (please don't ask off-topic questions like that in someone else's threadP. Check out the Tools section of CC. You'll find the Burn Meter can give you some idea how many calories you burn in a day.

I tried it with your stats, assuming you're a total couch potato, and came up with 2740 calories. That's what you burn in a day. For how much to consume in you food, eat 500 to 700 calories less to lose weight. 2000 would work unless you are more active; if you exercise 2500 cal would be a better diet.

I hope this helps.

Are you vegan? I don't see any animal-source food on your menu. As people have said you need a bit more protein - ask around in the Vegetarian forum.

And of course you should eat several hundred more calories a day.

It doesn't matter when you weigh as long as you're consistent. But first thing in the morning is usually your lightest weight.

If you get upset by the little ups and downs of the scale don't weigh daily. How often to weigh mostly depends on your psychology.

The Lounge Alcoholic? Oct 12 2009

I'm an alcoholic myself. I'm unlike you - I drank nearly every day, but fairly moderately. Certainly not blackouts. But I drank until I ran out of money and had to decide on booze, smokes, or food.

You have to ask yourself if you have any control over when you start drinking. You have 3 months sober time, and that's excellent, but it's not long enough to be able to see if you were alcoholic or just a habitual drunk. I hope that makes sense.

I'm not involved in any group such as AA right now, and I take the attitude that I want to avoid toxic substances even if they're tasty. It took me 10 years to get out of that pit and I'm glad it looks a bit easier for you. I wish you all the best.

I once stayed up all night cooking poule au pot in my slow cooker. It smelled so wonderful that I just had to watch it cook and I couldn't go to bed.

(note, I've since heard that you should cut up any chicken cooked in a slow cooker - the cavity heats up to slow for safety)

roasted garlic mashed potatoes. party in my mouth.

just normal mashed potatoes, but you wrap a head of garlic in tinfoil and bake it, then mash the garlic into the potatoes with a bit of skim milk. you could probably also add some onion and herbs.

soooo gooooood.

 Sounds delicious!

Julia Child has a recipe for garlic mashed potatoes that calls for 2 heads of garlic... and of course loads of butter and heavy cream. Yours sounds more practical:)

I agree with you, but my parents believe in never deviating from what they consider a healthy diet. Which, for them, is a diet very low in fat.

I've decided to go with Clairelaine's herbed roast potatoes. Should be really good. Our Thanksgiving dinner is tomorrow so I'll see how they go over!

I'm really into egg cookery:) One of the first dishes I ever learned to cook was a French omelette. Ironically, I now find I prefer scrambled eggs. I used to hate scrambled eggs until I found out that the good ones were cooked over very gentle heat until they aren't slimy. Overcooked scrambled eggs are horrible!

Thanks for your responses, but I've decided to go with the Joy of Cooking's recipe. One big selling point is it has no cheese - cheese is my mother's biggest "fear food": she used to enjoy it but gave it up to lose weight. Bacon is actually better, and the recipe calls for 3 slices, chopped and cooked till crispy. And well-drained of course!
