Just buy fiber bars!

That's terrible advice.

The point is to learn how to eat real food, not rely on supplements and conveinenance junk.

Agreed. Eat real, whole natural foods. Vegetables, berries, flax, chia, Raw nuts, legumes, beans, lentils, edamame... quinoa, millet, amarenth, Gluten free oats, buckwheat groats

Konjak, gluconamman powder- made from a plant and used to make shiritaki and in Asian nutition is a fiber source, that is also a great thickener for soups and other recipies.

I have my own kryptonite foods (like cashews -- I just can't stop eating them once I start).  But I think you are looking for affirmation that it is okay to continue eating these in this quantity.  Only you can answer that.  Are you progressing ok despite this "gorge"?  (Did you gain/maintain/loose?)  If you are satisfied with your progress, then I guess it is ok.  If you feel frustrated with your progress, then you should probably try to reduce the quantity, or if that isn't possible (I know) then stay away from them.

There are other issues as well.  Does eating them keep you from eating something worse?  In other words do they completely satisfy you and if you didn't eat them, you would try to fill that craving with something else?  Do you have any side effects, like bloating?  Would you be satisfied eating plain almonds with a couple of Hershey's Dark Chocolate bite size candies (or something similar)?  Does eating these lead to other poor choices?

The answer is within yourself.  If you're happy with everything, then there you are!  People say to me, I don't know what you can eat.  I tell them I can eat whatever I want.  So, if chocolate covered almonds are a must for you, just make it work.

Good luck!  I hope you find a way to enjoy them, whether it be a few a day or occasionally!

I need to post this on my fridge.... Very well said

I have definate kryptonite foods, some are actually good, others not so much. However, the bigger picture is the behaviors about eating; To me some days it is a "splurge" or treat, others a binge and self sabotage...

If it is making you feel bad, or bothering you that much, re consider eating them, at least that many. Sometimes, a small serving can actually be satisfying if you give it a chance. If thats just "not eanough" then decide if it is really worth it knowing the "unpositive" feelings following it.

Foods Your opinion on bread and grains? May 08 2013

There are some wonderful grains (and also  legumes and beans) that are very healthy, good for energy, fiber, weight control and  satiation; Quinoa, Steel cut oats, amarenth, teff, buckwheat, brown/ red/ black rice, and wild rice have the most benefits. Quinoa in particular is high protein.

Some people feel they do well with bread, whole grain wheat and bran but I have the opposite and am very gluten intolerant. There are others who do well, and also pumpernickle, barley and some people even do well with corn.

The defining factor is the quality and quantity of the grain, preparation, the persons over all diet and exercise.

Chick peas, lentils, black/ red/ white beans and split peas, etc are all very good and definately healthy.

So I just say 100 cals a cup- if I am still hungry after 2 cups OR 150- 180 a cup If I am full....lol Honestly I dought its 30 but maybe like butternut squash or pumpkin at 80 a cup

Either way It is healthy, filling, tasty and a happy food :D

2000 starving??? What?

Normal non ultra athlete/ teen/ etc. woman recommended minimum is 1200. THAT is by ACSM giuidelines. We are not a society that needs all those calories. To know your metabolic profile a licenced metabolic specialist must do tests requiring fasting, prep work, computer, etc and that is still not full proof.

If someone is not loosing then there are more calories being stored, unused, absorbed than burned or utilized. Period.

It is NOT really rocket science, just a bit confusing when sooo many theories are out.

It is lifestyle change, reducing caloric intake, exercise and maitenance.

I think that all these calculators are based on average metabolic rates so they are not ground truth for everyone. This means that you have to adjust the numbers based on your results.

However, if you are systematically significantly  under your calorie intake without losing weight it can mean one of two things:

1) The counting is biased: you eat more than you think or you do not work out as much as you think. Both are very common.

2) There is a problem with your metabolism in which case I would very strongly recommend to go to a Dr. and check your thyroid. The test is very simple any general practitioner should be able to do it.

If I were you I would compute my food calories and workout calories a bit more conservatively and reduce even further the target calories . If in 2-3 weeks there is still no downward trend I would definitely consult my general practitioner and tell him that I'd like to have my thyroid check. I am a little surprised that your dietician did not ask you to do that already. If he/she did not, that might mean that he/she secretly thinks that your eating/exercise pattern are not sufficient :)

They (dieticians) are trained to keep a very positive attitude (as the negative attitude almost always leads to worse results) but as a downside they might not always tell you straight forward what they think.

Hope this helps.

T.

THIS -  Totally agree Also, many gluten free products have equal or sometimes more calories, fat and sugar. Sticking to all natural, whole foods, less fat, sugar and more fiber, vegetables, fruit. Eliminate chemicals, pecticides, hormones etc.

I recommend Unjury protein mixes.  Great taste, made in America from ingredients here, no residue, they even have a chicken soup flavored one.  I like that one mixed with a can of fat-free, low sodium chicken broth.  Best part is 20 grams or more of protein per scoop!  Equivalent protein to 4 oz of chicken breast.  Now, that's "meal replacement".  Good luck!

Deni

I had the "chicken soup" - no chicken in it- and loved it! I would mix it with tofu and made my own vegetarian (well, sort of since its whey) chicken. I didnt like strawberry shake though and much prefer soy or pea protein for shakes. It wasnt filling for me alone. Vanilla could be better, I'm not a fan of strawberry flavoring

actually i was born in japan, and have inquired about this to experts as it was sort of bugging me.. in japan, it is said to be 91 calories per 100g raw.. in north america, it has yet to be added to the usda database.. i have spoken to a few professionals that have tested it to be just about equivalent to the calories in a sweet potato... so no, not 30, but more like 80-85cals/100g raw.. i think it is dependent on the percentage of dry matter in the squash...

So what is that equate to in cup measure? Did they compare the nutritional benefits similar also? Good for weight loss?

Yea, it seems when I get squash premade and frozen- weather yellow , butternut or any kind- the fresh raw is different and seems to be more filling too.

I would guess its right given the amount of sights that say that it is 30 cals. I have been on a major kick with Kabocha and have been loooving it!

- fat free foods scare you

Bread is delicious.

- more sugar = the better :D

Until you get diabetes

- you want to kill anyone that says the need to lose weight to feel better

But what if they're obese?

- you get really angry if you are out in public and you hear people around you start talking about calories/weight/diets and wonder what has happened to the world!

People got smart and realized what they put in their mouth has an effect on their body.

I don't understand why people are so proud to identify themselves as a RECOVERING ANOREXIC and look down upon anyone who's not.

Agree. A much better approach is to build an identity outside of ED altogether...

This is also true- for me, recovery at first wasnt real recovery- back in high school going from anorexic to bulimic/ binge- night mare and even worse.

I am now a certified health professional. I get fustrated when doctors tell patients to eat everything and anything- it is like telling an ex pill addict to have a drink to relax.....

Noone is exempt from the risk of diabetes, cvd, etc. Eating to live, be well, healthy, and physically fit is the key. Going from starving to binging on cookies isnt the best idea for life... HOWEVER recovery means you CAN and WILL have "what you want when you want" but not go so far over it becomes another ED all together

This is still a cool thread, thats why I put my thoughts in....!

Fish, expecially fatty fish is a MUCH better way to get healthy fat, protein and has beneficial properties. Whitening fish also has high fat, and many other fish. Asian markets have an array of exotic fish and seafood if you are ever near one!

Contrary to the belief of many- and this is not to provoke ED or cause uproar, but it is FACT- dairy, expecially full fat, along with any SATURATED fat is not- repeat- not healthy. EVEN in anorexia, low weight the way to increase fat, cals /etc. is healthy fats. I have taken many college classes in health, nutrition, kinesiology and have certifications in pt, etc. FULL FAT  DAIRY is a cardiovascular disaster. The same goes for red meat, and other animal fats.

Fish, evo, abocado, seeds, nuts- there are many ways to increase fat, healthy weight and live a long life.

I don't fully agree. SAT fat is not neccesarily bad (coconuts, anyone?)

Also grassfed animal fat isn't "bad" either. Now I will agree, when I get a wal mart steak or something I will get london broil or sirloin, and always cut of chicken fat, etc, but from healthy animals, I don't believe it's bad.

SAT fat from any processed food is unhealthy, I will agree. (frozen meals, etcs)

Good point, grass fed is definately much much better, and coconuts, avocado and cocoa has beneficial effects/ properties. Generally speaking though, over all sat fat is not the best bet and isnt essential in the diet.
