Hi guys, I just had my first real prenatal appointment. Here in Canada, you don't get an early ultrasound unless you want to do the triple screen for downs, which I chose not to do. So I have to wait til 19 weeks for the anatomical US to see that my little bean is doing ok. My midwife took a lot of blood and felt for the fundus, but she couldn't feel it yet. Glad to hear everyone else is doing well. And I'm so envious of those of who are hearing hearbeats! |

Just to clarify, by kid-friendly I mean not sexy. And they (middle-schoolers) should 'get it', so no Stevie Nicks or anything 'retro'. I need something original! |

Why don't you buy canned pumpkin and mix it in with plain yogurt and some sugar and "pumpkin pie spice" -- I think you can buy this in the grocery store. You could even freeze it for 15-20 minutes so it gets thick and cold like a blizzard...

A lot of women, myself included (a bit), put way too much stock in their appearance. I guess the fear is that if they look less attractive, people will value them less. When I say attractive, I mean based on whatever standard of beauty they hold themselves against. I am pretty freaked out about gaining 25-35 pounds, but I know it's necessary. I am in my 10th week, and I've put on 2.5 lbs. I had to use quite a bit of self-control, because up until a couple of days ago, I had been experiencing insatiable hunger.

Who's starting to see a bulge? I think I can, but it might just be a roundness that was always there....

Well, I got a midwife! I'm really happy, because where I live, demand for midwives outstrips the supply. I was lucky to be able to book someone. My first appointment is on Monday. Is/does everyone bring their SO to their appointments? Mine really wants to come, but he can't make it. Also, I'm not sure if I want him at all these appointments. I think I might want a little privacy. He'll definitely come to the US appointment, though. |

Yes, there is a squat rack, but the lowest hook is about hip level. I actually came up with a solution using some risers from the step and some hard, rubber mats that I found lying around. Now the bar is about mid-shin and I can use more weight without killing my traps, so I can feel it in my legs a bit more. Is mid-shin too high for the bar to start? Can I switch from gripping the bar overhand to underhand? This seemed to help too for some reason. |

I am trying to do the kind that are in NROLFW. Well, I guess the work in my traps comes from working so hard not to round my shoulders and upper back since I know that can't be good. I do feel it in my abs a bit, but not at all in my glutes or legs. I feel like if I go down in weight then I definitely won't feel anything in my legs/glutes, which are the stronger/bigger muscles. I tried using some risers to raise the bar a little bit this morning, but all I could find around the gym were the risers from a step aerobics thingie, and since they're hollow, they kept getting stuck on the barbell plates and coming apart and it was really annoying. I will have to keep looking for a better solution, because I think this might be the problem. Maybe those foam bricks they use for yoga, but maybe I will wreck them if I use them for this purpose. I only use 10 lb plates, so without a riser the bar is only a couple of inches off the floor. When it was higer, it was way easier to keep my shoulders back. Thanks for your advice, folks! |

I'm not worried about gaining a pound... My weight never fluctuates, though, so it's probably a real pound. You're supposed to gain a little weight (2-4lbs) in the first trimester, though, so it's ok. I am ravenous all the time too. I'm just getting used to that hungry feeling. |

I'm still waiting to hear back from midwives... it's hard to get one, apparantly. I gained 1 pound, I think all of it in my boobs :( They are already big enough! I guess that's not too bad, seeing as I did a lot of eating out this weekend, including a 12 course chinese banquet. This is my first weight gain, and I'm going to try to keep it at that for another good chunk of time. I've been keeping up my 3x week weight lifting routine (I just started NROLFW a few weeks ago) and running 5K once or twice a week. No nausea yet! I hope it stays away! lsami, I hope your appt goes well. do you get an US at this stage?

| Pregnancy & Parenting | Finding a doc...what should I do? | Sep 20 2009 17:24 (UTC) |

Original Post by lsami: I am struggling with this, too. It sounds like you will be able to count on seeing your OB or another that you are familiar with, something that is important to me. All the hospitals near where I am are large teaching hospitals, and my doctor warned me that I will be being seen by residents and various doctors. He used the euphemism "team care" but was nice enough to explain it too me. He also let me know that while these hospitals have the best most up to date care, the docs there are pretty busy with complicated pregnancies, since regional and periphery hospitals transfer patients there if needed. This is leading me to want a midwife, but I've learned since starting to look for one that demand is greater than supply here, and it's hard to book a midwife. All the midwife practices here are associated with big hospitals, so that's where I'd give birth. I gotta say it... I'm pretty happy to be living in Canada. I don't have to think about how all this is going to get paid for. Even midwifery is fully covered. I forgot to add... I read about a study that compared low risk pregnancies under an OB's care and pregnancies under a midwife's care. The c-section rate for low-risk patients using the OB was 13% vs 8.5% for midwife. Also, operative vaginal delivery (no exactly sure what that is but it sounds bad) rates were 17% for OB and 5% for midwife. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=Arti cleURL&_udi=B6T8N-4G0105T-V&_user=10& amp;_rdoc=1&_fmt=&_orig=search&_s ort=d&_docanchor=&view=c&_searchS trId=1017604811&_rerunOrigin=google&_ acct=C000050221&_version=1&_urlVersio n=0&_userid=10&md5=fad68c0e3ebf4559f7 66633c1228a0a0 Here's the link, I only read the abstract! |

I am trying really hard not to gain weight, yet. I've heard you're only supposed to gain 2-4 lbs in the whole first trimester, so I'm trying to be careful. It is hard, though, because even after I eat a big, well-balanced meal, I feel like I haven't eaten for 12 hours. (And I mean, 15 minutes after eating.) It's that gnawing, irritable feeling, all day every day, and sometimes it wakes me up at night. I haven't lost any weight, so I know I must be eating enough... Question: midwife or OB? I need to decide, soon! I found a couple of midwife groups that will deliver in the hospitals that I want to go into. I think that they provide more care, and that there is more continuity, but I really don't want to be pressured into a homebirth or something like that. I want the option of the painkillers, too. What are you planning?
