Weight Loss Have no trouble counting calories, but I can't lose weight... May 04 2012

I'm 5'2" and I weigh 153 pounds, so I'm definitely overweight (but not obese).  The food scale and HR monitor are excellent ideas.  Which brand of HR monitor do you recommend?

The target Calorie Count gives me (using the standard USDA values) is 1200 - is it still OK to hit this level if I exercise every day?

This was almost exactly me on Jan 1/12.  I started at 151.5 pounds, 5'2", female, 31 years old.  I have been eating between 1500-1800 calories per day, I sit at a desk for work 8 hours per day, plus commute for 1.5 hours in my car, at home I rarely sit down (I have a very active 2 year old).  I have myself set at moderate activity because of my home life.  I log all of my workouts (3 times per week).   I have lost 18 pounds so far this year by eating that amount most of the time.  I have had a few bad weekends where I consumed more like 2000-2500 per day though.

I prepare most foods and try to stay away from packaged foods as much as possible.  I have a food scale and weigh EVERYTHING, that way I can't lie to myself about the portions.  I would highly suggest a food scale because it will tell you the complete truth about your portion size.  I did not have a clue about a true portion size until I bought the scale.

It is very hard sometimes.  When my son was about 9 months we were going through some health issues as well.  You know they are in pain and you have tried everything to make them more comfortable but nothing is working.

My trick was I would put him in his stroller and walk and walk and walk until he would fall asleep.  Once he'd finally nod off I would wheel the stroller right into the house and leave him sleeping in it.  My husband would carry him around the house for hours with the little guys head on his shoulder to get him to sleep, then he'd be stuck holding him because when he tried to lay him down he would wake up.  A car ride works a lot of the time too when they are really tire and fighting it.  We have spent many hours sitting in the car reading (after driving around until he fell asleep) while he slept just to get him to sleep.

Sometimes it is best just to put them in their crib and walk away for a few minutes even if they are crying hysterically.  You need a time out before you lose your cool.  There was a few times I put him in his crib and went and had a quick shower.  It is much harder to hear the wails when the shower is running and I could have a few minutes to calm myself down.  Yes he was still wailing and upset but when I came back to him but I was less upset and better able to deal with it.  A baby is safer alone in their crib than with an adult who is about to snap.  A few times when he was wailing and I did the walk away for a few minutes he even cried himself to sleep.

You are trying your best.

Black coffee with ice in it is just fineWink  Oh....you mean one of those frothy, icey, sweet concoctions from Timmies or Starbucks?  No I'd say that should definitely be a once in a while treat and not a daily indulgence if you are planning weight loss.  They are yummy though!

Please bring back  # of calories in total that I burn in a day!  I like the net calories, but as my weight goes down I like to know what my new Maintain # is.  And don't up my calories remaining just because I added activity.

Hey congrats on your acheivement of 14 Pounds in 2 months... :)

But what kind of excersice are you doing? Is it  a home workout DVD or r u hitting the gym?

Right now I do yoga at a studio once per week for an hour, Exercise bike at home twice per week for 30 minutes, and I chase after my 2 year old.  I also take my little guy to a toddler dance class for 45 mins once per week which is also a light workout for me.  As a family we do 1 activity that is physical on the weekend such as go swimming, walking, snow sledding or ice skating.  Overall I don't workout very much I just keep on my feet (and off my butt) from the time I get home from work at 4:30 until it is the little guys bedtime at 9:00 by cooking, cleaning, and playing and running around with my little boy.  Usually I sit and relax for 30 minutes each night and watch a TV show before going to bed.  I'm also going to be starting a Deep Water Aquasize class next week, so hopefully this will help out too.

What are you doing for exercise?

Don't ever skip meals, you will be hungry and it may set you up to binge later!  Calorie count suggests 1300 for me as well (Start weight 151 on Jan 1 2012, Currently 137 pounds, Goal 127.  I'm Female and 5ft 3in)  I Never eat below 1500, I have learned that this is my never go below number from past experiences here.  You need to add in excercise and extra daily activities that get you moving more to burn calories, get fit and build muscle.  Make little changes like taking the stairs instead of elevator, things like this will pay off in the long run.  Just restricting what you eat to very low calories will set you up for failure in no time at all.

I've read that breastfeeding takes up to an additional 500 calories per day!  I agree up your cals and quick or your might risk your milk drying up!  And drink TONS of water!  I was so hungry and thirsty while BFing I honestly don't know how you could have such low calories.

Maintaining Not sure how to go about this - my binging is getting better but... Feb 27 2012

I think your idea to slowly reduce calories week by week is a good plan that may work.  Maybe drop 100 calories per week.  I also agree with finch about adding in some calorie burning activities.

Drink a large glass of water before each meal.   It helps to fill you up and helps with digestion too.  Also eat slowly, it takes your brain a little bit to register that your tummy is full.  If others in the house need "treats" buy ones that you don't like so you won't be tempted.  I buy weird flavors of chips for my hubby and oreo cookies because I don't like them.

I'm guessing if it says half a pack it is something like ramen noodles.  Generally penne, fusilli, spaghetti come in a box that is 375g or more and shows calories for 85g (dry) serving.   I'd say it's not a very good regular choice if this is the case.  I occasionally eat a kimchee ramen noodle bowl as a treat but it is just ramen noodles and salty flavoring basically so it's not exactly what you would call healthy.

Hmmm.  It's been a long time since I last donated, maybe the calorie deficit is a good incentive.

Prune juice and coffee make for an explosive combination. This is more akin to "nuking" the colon rather than just cleansing.

I recommend doing this on a weekend when you don't have to be anywhere. To turn it off, stop drinking coffee and eat a meal.

I laughed so hard at this, classic.

I got a good chuckle here too!

I really like the tunnel idea. (So much for cutting down on Diet Coke. *I haz excuse now*)

I have one cat who works very well at rodent control.  He needs his claws.  My girl (in my avi) is a lover and is indepensible when you're not feeling well.  I would never declaw a cat.  Every declawed cat I have seen walks like the feet pain them.  Keep the claws trimmed, provide scratching posts and train the cat to use them.

My kitties are declawed and go outside only on leashes while supervised.  The male has caught a few birds, a few mice and even a vole.  The female has caught many grasshoppers and tried for birds but she's just not fast enough.
