"There's no better glory, When it all gets hairy, To be laughing in the midst of it all." One of my favorite lyrics. :) |

Most soda. I love my coke products, especially coke zero. I can get away with one off brand (I forget the name of it, they usually come in shorter fat bottles) for their "red pop", but that's about it. All of the others, they usually taste like they're about to expire. Scott toilette paper. I also have to buy name brand trashbags. Not very specific on the brand, but I've had bags rip 1 too many times on the way to the dumpster... Tyson thin cut chicken breasts. I hate cutting raw meat or long periods of time cooking and that makes it bearable. |

Anything where you have to interact with people all day. I'm very much an introvert. I handled bussing tables just fine, but couldn't be a waitress. I couldn't be a doctor/nurse, because I'm just no good at small talk and I have issues sympathizing with pain sometimes. I also don't think I could handle the emotional burden with something like that, or with working as a vet. Anything where I would be in the spotlight on a regular basis. So, no acting, singing, stripping... Nothing with large amounts of heavy lifting. I have something similar to arthritis and, unless it was the only way to make ends meet, the pain wouldn't be worth it. So, basically, I was made for life in the cube farms. |

Me and my ex did this on a fairly regular basis. I remember one time, he got really frustrated with me at Krogers because I wouldn't pick out the type of fish we should eat. (I think he was trying to push me to be less indecisive. My thoughts were he's the one cooking it, I know nothing about the different types of fish (at that point, fish I ate came in 2 forms - tuna in a can or "fish sticks"), and... well, I am indecisive). He ended up storming out of the store and walking home. Another time, he got frustrated at me because I wouldn't wear gloves outside (silly, I know... I just hate gloves). He stormed off to feed the horses and left me in his parents place. ... Wow, makes the relationship sound even more unhealthy than it was. Usually it was tiny things like disagreeing over the definition of opaque or whether religion was a good thing. Guess that fits the idea of it usually being on something bigger though... |

| The Lounge | What has been or was your least favorite class in college? | Jan 09 2012 21:58 (UTC) |

That's hard... I loved school, but I had some horrid teachers. My worst... I don't remember the name of the class (mostly because I dropped it after the second or third week), but it was a programming course in which the first assignment, not even the graduate students could get the first part of a 4 part project done. I knew I would either fail or only pass because he couldn't fail everyone. And either way I wouldn't learn anything. So, I decided to work extra hours that quarter instead. Then there was calculus 4. I dropped that in the first week. I could handle the course work fine, but the teacher initially refused to let me reschedule the final, and then told me he would let me take it late but would be a much harder, poorly written exam. Watching my sister graduate basic training was more important to me that a math elective. As far as classes I didn't end up dropping... I took a course on introduction to excel, powerpoint, etc. It was one of the few low level computer classes I could take to meet certain requirements, and I was already taking a heavy course load so I didn't want to take a harder course. I HATED that class... just because it was soooo easy and not a class designed for a computer science major. Plus, it was at like 7:30 AM. I ended up skipping every other class... including accidentally skipping an exam. ... but I ended up with a high A (either 98% or 102%, I don't remember). Oh, then there was the entrepreneur in programming course I took in which I had the 2 worst team mates on the planet. They wanted me to do an interview with them before they would let me on their team (I only asked to be on their team because they sent out an email looking for team mates and I hadn't found one yet), when this was a class project. Then, they kept picking lame topic ideas, but there were 2 of them, so I always got out voted. |

I used to cry every time I heard "Blinded By the Light". (You know, the upbeat song that everyone gets 'revved up like a deuce' mistaken?) Me and my sister used to randomly hang out for the day when she still lived here and every car ride, this song would come on. My sister's one of those outgoing people... every time she heard this song, she'd blare out singing it and it was hilarious and fun. So, when she left for the military, when ever this song would play, I'd hear her singing in my head and it would make me miss her. |

Another possibility - construction engineer? My mom loved being a safety inspector (she only quit and switched to being a scheduler because of her arthritis getting to her). You get to go out to job sites, so it's not just data entry at your desk. I imagine a surveyor would have a similar feel. |

I definately get that. That's why I love programming, I use the same skillset every day, but every task I get has new challenges with it. (It's a great carreer for math people ;) ). I know a girl who went with a forensic science type degree and she seems to enjoy it. It does have a lot of new challenges, as long as you don't assume it's just like all of the crime tv shows. A field that looked interesting to me is cryptology. I took a course on it in school and it was math heavy and seemed like a fun challenge. |

Most of the time, I love my job, but I have several reasons for wanting to try something new. Do you know, do you dislike the job because of the company or the job itself? If it's the company, it may be time to look into something new. If it's the job itself... with a math MS, you should be able to train into something new without too much trouble... I know in programming, we take people of most math/science degrees. Is there something related you find interesting? I found this link which gives a couple possibilities: http://www.math.ucdavis.edu/~kouba/MathJobs.h tml Or have you decided you don't like math at all? In that case... anything catching your interest that a friend does? You could potentially shaddow someone or at least get their feedback to let you know what the job is like to see if it's really something you want to do. |

I'm doing good. I've stopped worrying about letters for the time being and it's worked out for me so far. Other than that, I love my job and I'm excited about moving in a few months. How are you? |

| The Lounge | Honestly, can you comfortably leave the house without ANY makeup? | Jan 03 2012 14:55 (UTC) |

I comfortably leave the house without makup/hair products/etc 95% of the time. If I am wearing makeup, it's generally because I randomly had enough time to do it in the morning. If it's a difference of an extra 5 minutes of sleep (or 5 extra minutes in the shower), or 5 minutes doing my makeup... I'd rather have the sleep/shower. I do occasionally paint my nails, but I try to go with pinkish colors because I just don't care to keep up with it and end up having half chipped nails for a while. I do put on a necklace pretty much every work day though. But that's because my outfits tend to not look complete without something. |

When I go to trivia, they tend to define people on what they get. We've got sports guys and history/presidents guys... I get Disney, sci-fi/fantasy teen fiction, and 'music no one should know'. |

How do you get along with your coworkers? Pretty good actually. I've never really had an issue with a coworker before, there have been some that I don't talk to, but that's generallly been because I don't have any work directly related to them and I'm not very good at innitiating conversations. Are there any that you just absolutely cannot stand? How do you interact with them? Nope. There was one girl I felt uncomfortable with when I moved to this team, and we don't generally talk outside of when our work overlaps, but it takes a lot for someone to be someone I can't stand. How do you feel/deal/react when someone new comes into the workplace? I'm generally civil to them. I'm not very good at starting conversations, so it's usually a little awkward, but not bad or anything. Do you get to work by yourself mostly, or do you pretty much have to work closely with other people all the time? I'm a developer, so I spend a lot of time alone at my computer. But, I'm 1 of 2 database people for a team of 8ish application developers, so I do have to communicate with a decent number of people (plus our design people). I also do some application work, so there's more interaction with that. Do you socialize with your coworkers outside of the workplace? Some of them. I've invited 3 of my current coworkers to my home several times, and attend trivia with one of them on a weekly basis. I still also talk on a monthly or so basis to 3 of my past coworkers. Generally, it's the coworkers I've known for more than a year that I've had a decent bit of interaction with. What about work functions that occur outside of normal business hours...do you feel like they are necessary or required? Do you force yourself to attend just to look good, even if you really don't want to go? Some I do, some I don't. We have a monthly lunch with another 2-3 teams that, if I don't feel like going, I don't go. Also, the company wide ones, I only go if I want. The more 'special' ones, like the team specific Christmas lunch and stuff, I generally make the effort to go to. There are fewer people, so it feels like it makes a difference if I go or not. I also enjoy the smaller ones more because I have a habit of getting lost in a croud and tend to talk to only 1-2 people anyways. As far as tips for coworkers you don't like... I haven't really had this problem. I tend to at least get along with all of my coworkers, even the ones my other coworkers really dislike. |

A year ago, I entered into the 2nd round of a relationship I should have know wouldn't last. Now I'm comfortable being single and what that has in store for me. A year ago, I couldn't imagine having a social group out side of my high school friends, even though I had graduated college. Now, I go to trivia once a week, socialize with more people, and even eat and ocassionally drink (something big for me) with my new friends. A year ago, decisions, even small ones, had me terrified. Now, I am a few months payments into a car I chose to buy (and love!) and am concidering a house, or at least a move, next summer. A year ago, I was ok with my job but didn't know if it was something that really fit me, since a major thing keeping me there was friends that were planning on moving. Now, I love my job even more and am getting better at branching out to other people.
It's been a good growing year for me. Hopefully I'll have more good things to say a year from now. |
