I say, no, don't count the calories from the broth.  If you do that then you will be counting the calories from the chicken twice.  The chicken in its raw state has a set number of calories, by boiling it you are transferring some of those calories from the breast to the water.  As long as you aren't adding any other ingredients to the broth, then no calories have been add either.  Just add the calories from every original component.

^^^ Correct ^^^

Ounces can be a measure of volume or weight.  That is why I only use grams, since they don't even have to mention which type of ounce they are using.

I like plain Whey Protein, if I want to sweeten it up I can, but if I want just protein mixed with a glass of water I can do that as well.

Pure whey protein can up your protein intake.

I mix mine in 1% milk with a shot of espresso.   If it is after a workout I also add a teaspoon of sugar and a teaspoon of cocoa powder.

The mass of the campfire ash is indeed less, but ,as susiecue noted, no mass disappeared.  The making of the heat is a chemical reaction, so the body making heat does not eliminate mass.  The mass that goes in is the amount that comes out.  Unless you have kissing bugs around the weight lost while sleeping is moisture.  When its cold and you see your breath fog up, that is moisture not heat, but hot air can hold more moisture so it is visible in contrast.  Multiply the amount of moisture you see in your breath on a cold day times the number of times you exhale in a given night and it adds up very quickly.

Energy and mass are not the same thing.

When you burn firewood you do not convert the "weight" of the wood into heat.

Your body is throwing off moisture all night, a sweat so light that it evaporates before it soaks the sheets and most through breathing.

I thought about sweat and stuff, but 2 lbs is like... 4 cups!!  My bed would be soaked!  Kinetic energy, though, that sounds good.  :)

bmfan77 is right, your breath has a high moisture content.  Remember breathing on glass and writing in it.

As a backpacker I can tell you that a poorly vented tent, with a ground tarp, will be soaked on the inside from nothing more than your breath in the morning.

Weight Loss Hello I'm a newbie and have a question Jul 13 2009

Some people set their activity level to sedentary, and then log each days activity.  The idea is that it is more accurate, but also more time consuming.  You can add anything from housework to kickboxing.  Then on days you burn a lot more, you should eat more as well so that your calorie deficit never exceeds 1000 (500 makes more sense for your size) for any given day.

I have read that the body can only burn 31 calories from each pound of fat each day, the rest comes from muscle.  31 X 16 = 496 calories from fat loss.

Hit the free weights to preserve the muscle you have and maybe get some early gains as well.  Weights also increase your metabolic burn for a day or two after each workout.

I think it's time to switch to the metric system.

12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 16 ounces in a pound.  5280 feet in a mile.

And while we are at it how about one firm rule for spelling i before e and that's it no alternative Laughing!

Check the very bottom front of the tread mill or under the display for a switch.  Also, you could figure out the model # and then google the instructions.

Ah...great sources.

Thank you for clearing that up fourfolks =D

Though on another note...I don't suppose your going to have a cup of coffee right after-running now would you =P

You know all that information will be different in months or maybe years.  Foot in mouth

I try to stick mostly to water with a little tea or coffee each day, and water only during my workout followed up by skim milk with whey and a shot of espresso.

Coffee and Tea count towards your water needs as their diuretic reaction is insignificant.

Actually their diuretic reaction is significant...coffee has atleast 80 mg of caffeine per 250 ml cup, depending on the species, cultivation, and processing it could be more. The same with tea, black tea has atleast 50 mg of caffeine in it. As caffeine passes through the body it dehydrates it. If you noticed, after drinking a cup of coffee how you'd feel a bit thirsty, or how about experimenting with your body a little bit. Try to pea an hour after drinking coffee...that might tell you how significant their diuretic reactions are...

All this said without meaning to be rude if I sounded rude =]

You are not being rude, just sharing your knowledge, and that is what these forums are meant to be for.

NYTimes

“In the 10 studies reviewed, consumption of a caffeinated beverage resulted in 0 to 84 percent retention of the initial volume ingested, whereas consumption of water resulted in 0 to 81 percent retention.”

Wikipedia Click on section 2.10 to find this reference -

Contrary to popular belief, caffeine does not act as a diuretic when consumed in moderation, and does not lead to dehydration or to a water-electrolyte imbalance; current evidence suggests that caffeinated beverages contribute to the body's daily fluid requirements no differently than pure water does.[25][26][27][28]

Your kidneys, if healthy can process up to 4 gallons of water a day (not all at once though).  It is better to drink constantly throughout the day if possible.  Coffee and Tea count towards your water needs as their diuretic reaction is insignificant.  It would help to know the amounts (i.e. ounces, liters) you are drinking instead of pots and bottles.  But assuming your pots came from a normal store and not one atop a beanstalk, I think you are fine.

Watch the color of your urine, it should be closer to the clarity of water and further from yellow, unless you are taking a multivitamin and then watch for darker yellow as a sign of dehydration or check right before you take it.

Even better try eating more of your water with things like watermelon and cucumbers.

I think I have read in other posts that if you are under 21 you need to use a different calculator, as you are still growing.

(Insert more knowledgeable post below)

IMHO I wish I would have stopped gaining a long time ago, it would have saved me a lot of work I have to do now in order to lose Embarassed

Your motivation, to stay on top of your health and to research doing things the correct way, is awesome.

I have no idea what a doctor would do, but a calorie is a calorie.  So if someone can get enough calories from a vegan diet, that is properly organized for nutrients, then I don't think it would be a problem.

How long could you eat 900 calories a day, before your body started robbing your bones and bone marrow for nutrients?

I think 7 Mango's would put you over 900 calories a day and that's not a lot of food.

Do NOT dip below 1200 - as this suggests the beginning of bad eating habit - and I agree with this and I think everyone on this board supports it - or they should.

I don't.  1200 a day keeps me on the heavy side.  I exercise a LOT, but I also have a desk job - which makes a HUGE difference.  Apples and oranges. What works for many, does not work for all.

Do you honestly believe that the rest of us who eat far above 1200 to lose weight don't have desk jobs? I assure you, many of us do.

As I said, what works for some, does not work for all. THAT was my point.  Generalizations, are simply that.

 fitmom4life are you legaleli also?

He was the one rambling about generalizations and claiming he wanted to see his girlfriend at 110 pounds, which is below what the bmi charts describe as healthy for her size, only to say "it was tongue in cheek" later.

legaleli, the way you post is more like spamming the message boards, you are not adding anything new just regurgitating the same 1950's logic over and over again.  That logic being that women should starve themselves to achieve weights that are unsustainable and damaging to their emotional and physical well being, all so they will appear to be more attractive to you.
