Weight Loss Once I start I can't stop! May 07 2009

This is hilarious.  Before I saw this post I had just journalized this...... "When I realized how good it tasted, the thought popped into my head to eat a HUGE bowl, and even go for seconds, or eat till I sleep...I didn't but I wondered why I felt that would be an ultimate high."

I stopped and told myself...... "Why is it the ultimate high?  It isn't sex, it is food, fat, weight gain if I eat it.... I won't feel anything but guilty when I finish"

I can't keep my house full of GOOD THINGS...  I know you have kids, but is this good for your kids to see the cupboard always full of GOOD TASTING things?  Do they eat them too.  Why not all of you eat raw veggies for snacks. We have to stop ourselves and  from teaching our kids that food will fill the emotional vacancies of our lives.

Physical exercise does help fill these vacancies, and so does volunteer work.

I have been on Levothyroxin for several years now.  I have gained and lost on it.  I think the medication has NOTHING to do with it, but rather how conistent you are with diet and exercise.

If you tell yourself your weight gain is because of your thyroid, you give yourself permission not to lose or eat more, and similarily if you try to lose by reducing calories too much, you tend to binge when your hunger gets the better of you. So don't eat too little, be consistent with food, exercise, and medication.

I heard this saying and it makes lots of sense.  Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and diner like a pauper.

4 and 5000 mg of salt is way too much, although I have never heard of salt being a cause for hunger.

As far as gaining 4 lbs.  Did you gain or did the baby?  At 8 mos (assume 2 wks ago you were about that)  you gain rapidly, and should be gaining about 1 or 2 lbs a week in the last 6 weeks.  What does your doctor say about your weight?  I am sure he would not be happy giving that much salt to the baby... and yes, the baby digests what you eat.

Foods Diet soda question? May 02 2009

The original question was about the salt content of Diet Sodas.  I have one in front of me as I type, and the amount of salt is very low at 50 miligrams.  That is less than 2% of the days recommended limit.  One would have to drink 50 cans to make a significant difference in salt.  Must ask you... do you eat crackers?  there is 5 times more salt in three stoned wheat thins than in one diet pop.

It might be sensible to cut down your amount of diet pops, but I don't think you have to stop drinking the completely!

I am very suspicious of studies... Consider this.. A. "Studies have shown that people who drink 1 glass of red wine per day have less heart attacks."  B. Studies have shown that even one glass of alcohol a day can increase heart disease."   Where is the conclusiveness of the proof of these studies.

OR...

A. " in the 1970s and '80s, coffee's name was mud. Studies showed — tenuously or incorrectly, experts now say — to pancreatic cancer, heart attacks, birth defects, miscarriage, osteoporosis, and other ill effects.

B. "There is surprising news about coffee and your health -- it's antioxidant content, the link between coffee consumption and reduced risk of diabetes, Parkinson's and colon cancer; enhanced memory and physical performance. "

As far as Diet drinks?? I once had a brother in law that drank Diet coke with his rum, up to 15 a day every day, so he wouldn't get too much sugar.  Of course, he went right on gaining. Rum is 180% overproof, which means 90% sugar.  Did the Diet drink make him gain weight?  Nope... but his mind set of thinking he was protected by drinking it likely did, especially since while drinking he ate huge meals (all fats) and never exercised.

I am so sorry you feel so hopeless...

But......... why do you think only a relationship will fix everything.  When did you give all your power to the male gender.  You are worth sooooooo much more than a relationship.  Here is a little parable I told my daughter when she told me something like you stated in your first post.

When my daughter told me she was so lonely and wanted to be married, I told her to make a huge chocolate devils food cake, and instead of sugar, put in 1 cup of dry mustard.  She said... "Mom, that will taste awful."

I said... "Well, then you can make a huge fluffy frosting and pile it on top."

"But that won't make the cake better.." she said and so I said.

"And neither will a man make you better.  Marriage is not the cake; it is only the frosting on the cake."

I too have been alone for more than 10 years, and expect I might spend the rest of my life alone, but... I know I am a worthwhile mother, grandmother, sister, friend and first and foremost a child of God.  God loves me so much he gave his only son for me... how can I undermine his love. I am not junk... God doesn't make junk.. and you are not junk either.

Foods Fiber??? May 09 2008

I suppose the answer would be much more in the kind of fiber to which you are referring.  If it is green, red, or yellow veggies.. there is no such thing as too much fiber.. If it is pasta, rice, wheat or potatoes, yes, you can get too much.

Example, oatmeal with brown sugar, 157 calories.  (then add milk)

Lettuce, 2 cups shredded = 16 calories

Its a matter of choice.  If you want a lot of fiber without calories, eat lettuce, carrots, radishes, celery, broccoli... all raw without dips.

Of course you do.  You burn calories just breathing, but I think your question is likely.. Do you burn more calories walking in heals than in flat shoes.

I would think not if you are walking at the same pace, but as others have pointed out you use different muscles.  The only way to tell would be to use a heart monitor I would think. Not hard to check out 5 min walk with versus without if you have the one that counts your calories.

Foods When did potatoes become a dirty food? Apr 29 2008

I agree with all of you.  Potatoes have been given a bum rap.  However, I do use yams as often as I can find good ones because they taste better and have more vitamins and less calories. (74 for 1/2 cup) Here is a list of the nutritional content....

and here is what it says for one small baked potato with skin.

Not that much difference, but the yam does have manganese and dietary fiber.  But you can get that many places. Whole grain foods are a good source, as well as, wheat germ, pecans, and other nuts, dried legumes, blueberries and pineapple.

I use auto settings exclusively.  I usually use the one "less dry" and about 2 marks down towards wetter.  I find that most stuff doesn't require any ironing at all if I get them right away. If I fold the jeans right away, it even puts a nice crease in them.

Weight Loss Can you lose weight without exercise? Apr 25 2008

Weight loss is the least of the reasons I exercise.  In fact, my doctor says exercise only makes up about 10% of weight loss.

Since including well balanced exercises to my regime I have accomplished the following.

  • improved heart function
  • improved lung function
  • better muscle tone
  • better sleep patterns
  • regular body elimination
  • stronger bones (protection against osteoporosis)
  • a better outlook - more optimism (less depression, although I would never have called myself depressed)
  • smoother skin, believe it or not less wrinkles
  • no colds at all (course I am not near any children now I am retired)

Probably there are more improvements, but even without the mild weight loss the benefits of fitness are enormous.

I wasn't suggesting you shouldn't ask... I was suggesting you were right to be suspicious of her intentions, and the other thread confirms it.

You Said: " Or mabey i will just let her know i lost another 2lb when I weighed myself this morning.

I wouldn't goad his sister if it were me.  She just might make it her project to get rid of you and that might not be worth the aggravation.  Be confident that you look and feel better.

Sometimes our friends don't want us to succeed because then they know they should try too.  Something very similar was posted last week.  Have a read.  I was surprised at home many had been where you are in this dept.

Why can't they just be happy for me?

Senior citizens and baby boomers, the age groups most tempted by claims of easy weight loss products, should heed the deceptive marketing done by some of the most popular of these 'magic' pills. Marketers of the four products –Xenadrine EFX, CortiSlim, TrimSpa, and One-A-Day WeightSmart – have settled with the FTC, surrendered cash and other assets worth at least $25 million.

Two marketers of Xenadrine EFX will pay at least $8 million and as much as $12.8 million to settle FTC allegations that Xenadrine EFX’s weight-loss claims were false and unsubstantiated. The funds will be used for consumer redress. In a bankruptcy case not involving the Commission, the defendants have also agreed to pay at least an additional $22.75 million to settle claims brought by creditors and consumers, including personal injury claims for an earlier ephedra-based product.

There you go... they have been fined for 25 million for fraudulent claims. They have also been successfully sued for damages for injury and loss of health.
