I understand your anxiety kate! We're pretty much the same right now. :) Just keep the desire to be healthy prominent! I wouldn't worry about stopping gaining yet, I think our bodies will adjust when we get to that point. Stay strong! :D

Also, congrats nutriciousdelicous and everyone else :) keep up the good work!

Health & Support Inducing a period with medication? May 25 2010

Mostly the reason I am having trouble motivating myself to gain weight is that you guys are the only ones who ever say to. My doctor didn't suggest it, my parents don't, and no one else. So it feels weird and embarrassing to gain weight, esp. when I feel like people know me as being thin (which is obviously not a reason to stay thin, just saying it doesn't help) and none of you have seen me in real life. I definitely feel if my doctor suggested it, I would have no problem. Regardless, I am eating 2500 to gain.

Thanks for the replies fidget and antibinge! So you both think I should take the medication while gaining to a higher weight? I hope your period continues, antibinge!! Good luck!

Orlaith, you make a good point about listening to what your doctor prescribes, but I am less willing to go along with it because I feel she just prescribed it to appease me, and did not really feel that anything is wrong. She did not care if I took it or not. This makes me think she is underestimating the issue? I am not sure. I am wary of doctors sometimes...

Spinach_spy, thank you for responding. I wish you luck in getting your period back! Since you are at a healthy weight, perhaps it's stress or other reasons. Have you gone to the doctor, though?

katkelly, thanks so much! I really hope you're right. :) You are the same as me - I hate taking medications as well, even if I don't feel great (I generally don't get sick though). I hate the idea of it, though obviously sometimes it's necessary. I just don't like taking it unless it's needed. Thanks for the advice and encouragement, I really appreciate it =)!

I've been SO hungry all day, which I appreciated, because it makes it easier to eat everything and enjoy it. :D I also did better than usual of having less volume!

Breakfast: Clif Bar (260) and Multigrain cheerios (165) with peanut butter (85)

Snack: Cashews (160)

Lunch: Whole wheat bagel (250) with peanut butter (169) and jam (70), multigrain cheerios (165) and milk (65)

Snack: Cashews (160) and graham crackers (70)

Dinner: Half bagel (125), cream cheese (45), raspberry jam (50); corn and peas in basil sauce (80); banana (100); and vanilla milk (190)

Dessert: Ben and Jerry's chocolate brownie fro-yo (170)

Snack: Other half of bagel (125), cream cheese (45), raspberry jam (50)

~2600

We have no fruit and veggies in the house, so I finally ran out to the store at dinner for the veg and banana. haha.

Edit: Zeb, thanks for the tip about Old Navy. :) I went there to try & snatch some, but they were totally cleared out! haha. Luckily another store had 2/$5 which isn't bad!

Thank you SO much for that. Especially hearing the fact that the damage from being underweight is reversible is such a weight off my shoulders.

Since I don't  think I am anorexic, I may not need to gain a ton of weight, BUT I will if necessary.

When going about this, when I get in the BMI of 20s, how long should I wait before deeming it appropriate to gain more weight? I.E. let's say I am at a BMI of 20, waiting for a period, and how long would I wait to gain a few more pounds?

Thank you!! I feel a lot better! Smile

I am feeling insecure about gaining because I am doing it because I decided to, not because anyone in real life thinks I need to or is pressuring me too. So, maybe it'll help if I post here.

Good point! Well I am certainly willing to eat back the calories, of course!

Ahh, that makes sense. That is a tricky decision then... because if I take the medication to shed the lining, I won't know when my real period is back. However, if it takes me a while to gain the weight/get enough fat/fat intake, I will have those cells in there for a while! I am not sure what I should do then? :/

Thanks so much for replying. :)

Health & Support Period Question May 15 2010

I decided to use this thread to ask another question.

I am eating more fats (mostly PB) and will try to gain some weight, especially because I found out I am only 110 pounds (lower than I thought). However, I have worked hard this year to get better at running (not very long distances, just better endurance) and I don't want to lose it by not exercising.

So, when trying to get my period back, is it okay for me to do exercise? I only do 3 times a week. I do a 20 minute Jillian Michaels DVD or run 2-3 miles, so it's nothing too strenuous.

"For a girl so adamantly opposed to the media's portrayal of women and ideal body image, I'm sure sucked into their game."

Ahh, this so accurately describes me. :( I am also VERY against the idea of women out there, but I find it so hard to be self confident when I weigh more... I struggle with self-confidence to begin with! bah!

I wish I could magically give you the confidence. I think you have what you need to attain it though! I was thinking maybe "fake it til you make it" might work here. Maybe not, but at least teaching yourself to think positive thoughts and be self-confident would help, right?

Anyway, just remember you're completely healthy and look great; I know it's hard to be confident. I wish you the best...stay strong!!

Haha wow, basically my problems too! I like your ideas.. I actually think I'll try hummus again. My tastes change frequently! Also, I love the plain yogurt and things like that too and try to avoid a lot of the dining hall food (most of the entrees are made from white bread :( )

That's so funny, because fro-yo is my thing too. I gave it up for lent, but now have had it every day since I was allowed, haha. I just need to find a different dessert, I love having something sweet after eating <3

I will definitely try oatmeal with milk & toppings.

It's nice to find someone similar to me...I don't know anyone here that is!

We're so similar! It's funny. I think it's impressive you stopped to consider the most important thing, being healthy, rather than just dropping weight when you don't need to. I think you sound very healthy & in a good place, and your weight is great! I agree that you should go and buy new jeans. You  have the right attitude and are doing great. (:

Health & Support How do I prevent myself from overeating? Apr 05 2010

I know this isn't helpful, but I have this issue often too. I am getting better at listening to my hunger though... I always have the urge to finish what's on my plate, but I've realized I usually get full first! If I stop, I avoid an uncomfortable full feeling later, and just remind myself if I get hungry later, I can just have a snack. :) But, eating the whole chocolate rabbit is definitely something I can see myself doing, and I understand what you mean when you say you get the idea in your head, because I do that too; I think portioning it out is a good idea, and practicing not eating everything (unless you're hungry, then you should :D)

It's going to be hard on my body image, as I am already really self-conscious as it is, but I will try as hard as I can. Sealed

Thanks so much for the support.

Thanks for the advice gi-jane! I have a hard time grappling with the idea of gaining more weight... I feel/look good now. :D But... I will consider gaining more if it will help... well, I am going to be doing strength training, so that should help me gain some muscle mass...

Thank you so much for the information hedgren. I can't decide whether I fit on the eating disorder spectrum. I mean, when I knew I had gain weight because I was such a low weight, I loved it! And I don't desire to be a low weight because I want to be healthy. I do kind of not like eating very high calorie foods, though. I think my problem has always been not wanting to be average and being thin isn't... : / However, I will not sacrifice my health for it and I think this saves me. I go through battles in my head this way, but healthy always wins.

Anyways, I am was 120 lbs at the doctor's [OBGYN] and am 5'7" ish. She didn't suggest gaining more weight, and the hormones I got tested were FSH, Prolactin and LTH I think.

I am afraid for my bones/fertility but can't rationalize gaining more weight if I don't know it will help. If I knew for sure it would, I would not mind one bit!

I can mention all of this to her, or get a second opinion like you said. Thank you!!

Edit: based on what you said, I can agree that by not eating enough a few years ago, that probably generated eating anxieties. I do feel I am way more knowledgeable now though. :)

Interesting...hmm I will have to consider taking it. I just wish I knew why it wasn't coming in the first place - it'd be nice to have it just come naturally. :)

I guess it could be stress or it just doesn't know how since I've only had it once. So, maybe the medication would fix it.
