i walk a lot. 7 miles of walking 4mph every day in addition to my walking fitness class, which i have every other day.

and if it counts, i do jumping jacks/situps/pushups in the morning before breakfast and at night.

but other than that i'm 100% sedentary.

blue bunny fat free/no sugar added caramel toffee swirl or fudge brownie iceream is only 90 calories and tastes amazing.

the only issue i've had with it is if i eat more than one serving per day, it bothers my stomach. that's probably due to some of the artificial additives. but a single serving shouldn't be a problem, especially calorie wise.

but if you don't mind artificial sweeteners, definitely blue bunny.

Cravings for sugar are often a result of low blood-sugar. Symptoms... energy dies away, feeling a little 'jittery' or shaky, low moods, fatigue/yawning, hunger-pangs. This can be caused by a) not eating enough in total, b) eating too much sugar, refined carbohydrates and processed foods and c) going too long between meals. A little honey on its own is unlikely to cause the problem

Check you are a) eating enough, b) eating mostly 'whole' unprocessed, unsweetened foods and c) eating regular meals and snacks. Good luck

none of those symptoms really apply to me. i'm pretty much just craving carbs and sweets.

i actually never get real hunger pangs, just cravings.

If you buy honey, get it from a local beekeeper. What you see on the store shelves has been heat extracted and always has a faint smell of beeswax. The local honey I get tastes so fresh and smells like flowers.

As for it being better than using refined, white sugar - a calorie is a calorie and sugar is sugar. While we can get some benefits from honey, such as the flavor, the calories add up the same way.

Moderation is the key. Just stay within your daily limit and burn more than you eat and you'll lose weight.

oh, i know that a calorie is a calorie; i was just unsure if my recent cravings for more sugar were linked with the fact that i recently started eating honey.

but thanks everyone for answering.

i kind of have the same problem, and i think it stems from the fear that my food is going to get cold (or melt if it's frozen) if i don't eat it quick enough. because of that i've developed a habit of eating too fast, even though i used to be able to stretch out one lean cuisine to thirty minutes without speaking to anybody at dinner.

what i hate about it is that it gets me really full (which i don't like). i'd rather eat and not feel the food in my stomach making it bigger (partially chewed food vs. fully chewed), so i should probably break the habit :T

I'm with kajikit here. While it might be a few cals over, it's not a huge difference. 3 ounces of a meat compared to 4 is a huge difference though. At the end of the day, it's close enough for me.

Although, I wonder if there's a difference in starting weight and viewpoint. I mean, compare how many calories I used to eat to maintain/increase my weight before I started to my current intake. 100 calories is nothing when you're over 300 to start. But if you only need to lose 10 pounds, seems like it'd be harder.

lol a few calories over?

you have to remember that a serving of cereal is typically around 30g. even if you put it in a cup and then weigh it out and it's 10g more--and even though 10 isn't a big number--that's 1/3 more calories. in a 120 calorie cereal, that's 40 calories more...

40 calories is not a big deal at all.

really? well i guess it's a matter of opinion then. 40 calories would put a big dent in my plans for the day. it's like the difference between a bowl of cereal with a half of a banana, or just a bowl of cereal.

and what if you eat more than one bowl of cereal a day? or, quite frankly, a lot of food labels are similarly inaccurate. you could be eating hundreds of calories over what you think you're eating.

@armandleg: haha, another big breakfast eater. i'm like that too, i can't stand a small breakfast. but two bowls of cereal for breakfast to me is like nothing, i'm a big, BIG breakfast eater. sometimes i'll end up eating almost all of my calories at breakfast. :x

I'm curious to know how old you are. Some meds said to help with these problems can be habit-forming, even if they're non-addictive. You get "addicted" to how they make you feel and it makes it hard to stop taking them.

Also, why can't you jog? Are you trying to jog your entire 6 mile route? Of course you'll end up winded. But unless you have asthma or another health problem, a healthy young person should be able to work their way up to jogging.

You might consider reviewing your diet/exercise with a doctor or nutritionist. They might have suggestions for upping your protein or other things that will help you get by on less sleep and still have the energy you need for the day.

i'm 17.

i tried jogging before, but it was really, really difficult to keep up for even two minutes. never in my life have i been a good runner; it hurts my chest horribly and i just get slower and slower with each few seconds that go by. but somehow, i'm an excellent walker.

but like i said, i thought about it and i think it's more of the classes themselves that are making me drowzy, because i recall last year being able to get a lot of sleep, consistently, for a month or so and still falling asleep. the sleepiness happens at home when i'm sitting in a chair playing video games or watching TV, even if i had woken up at 12 in the afternoon that same day. i think it has something to do with... okay, i'm supposed to be concentrating on this, and the more i realize that the sleepier i get. does that make sense?

The effects of both adderal and Ritalin last 12 hours on the low end - even taking smaller dosesFrown. They are both obtained by prescription. If you describe you lack of alertness, or more accurately, your lack of concentration (I'm assuming this has something to do with school or studying?) your doctor may prescribe one of these, or a similar, medication.

Please be advised that both these meds are strong, and unless you take them first thing in the morning, you will find it very difficult to sleep, which leads to taking these pills pretty much every day to cope with the lack of sleep. A better first step for alertness is more sleep to begin with ,or perhaps switching up your schedule (i.e. waking up earlier to study.) I find that I am personally more alert in the morning, and have always gotten my best work done then. I hope you find a solution that works for you, hun!

if i were to be prescribed the meds, i would definitely take them in the morning when i wake up at 5:30. i'm only sleepy at school, and as school starts at 8 and ends at 2:50 i should be fine with 12 hours.

you know, i'm beginning to think that it's more about sitting in a desk listening to lectures that make me drowzy, rather than a lack of sleep. over the summer there have been a lot of days where i've only achieved 7 hours of sleep and i very rarely got sleepy. when i did it was at night, but only when i was sitting in a chair watching TV.

it's kind of like if i'm supposed to concentrate on something and i'm sitting down, i'll fall asleep.

try less timeconsuming exercise. Do more intense workouts that take you 1 hour or less.

Instead of walking, alternate walking and jogging for half the time. Or walk up and down hills or stairs for 1/2 to 1/4 of the time. Replace one day of walking with an interval workout. Go all out for 1 minute, then recover, then go all out again. Do this for a max of 20 minutes.

Some days, replace walking with 20 minutes of weight lifting. 2 or 3 20 minute workouts will help make you fit and trim. Add 5 minutes of warmup/cooldown, and 5-10 minutes of stretching, and you have a full workout in under 45 minutes.

Then use the time you save to sleep more.

ahh, the numbers are so mindboggling...

i really can't run or jog; i've tried, but i get winded way too easily and it's just plain not enjoyable. the problem with weights/ walking stairs, too, is that i don't want to build muscle; i just want to burn calories. and i don't have any access to weights anyway...

i'm not really an educated exerciser, either, so i honestly don't know what i'm doing. that's why i walk: it's simply and it burns a lot of calories.

although, 3 miles takes me about 40-45 minutes for a total of about an hour and a half for all 6. honestly, i'd rather take medicine than cut back on 30-40 minutes of walking time for exercise i don't feel comfortable doing.

30-40 minutes won't make much a difference on 6-7 hours of sleep, as i tend to get sleepy even with a lot more. i remember once last year i tried getting 10 hours and i was still dozing off. i'm not sure the issue lies completely within my schedule/sleeping time, which is why i was considering medicine.

i personally don't think they're worth 60 calories; they're so small.

i prefer taking the instant stuff you're supposed to make with milk and make it with water and splenda instead, and eating all four servings you get in the packet for about 100 calories.

there's a lot of sodium, about 60% of your DV, but all you really have to do is lay off the sodium for the rest of the day. it's way more worth it, IMO.

Yes. Adderal and Ritalin. Both will make you not sleep at all, be shaky, and not be hungry. But, oh my, will you be alert. These drugs are staples of law/grad/medical school. Not recomended for anyone trying to live a healthy lifestyle, unless you truly have severe ADD. But.... you asked, and they do have the sole benefit of making one concentrate most intently.

how long do their effects last?

as long as it keeps me awake from 5:30 am-9:30pm, i think i would be fine.

i wouldn't abuse them, maybe just use them occasionally on days where i really haven't gotten much sleep.

@gary: what exactly is that?

@eyeslice/dbacker: i do already take a multivitamin with plenty of the B vitamins; i'm not sure how much more i could get so that it would make a difference...
