Weight Loss Do I listen to the doctor? Or... Jan 07 2011

Hi Jessifm,

I don't often post here, but usually read the features and some replies... your post immediately got my "protective mother mode" in gear. Nothing against doctors, but I have yet to meet one that really understood diet and nutrition. They understand they want you to lose weight and someone told them once less calories is the way to go... and they have stuck with it!

You are right not to put your body in starvation mode! I often think longingly of the day when I was your age, 187 pounds at 5'11" and thought I was the size of Texas so I went to a diet doctor... I weighed 150 pounds three months later... and six months after that weighed 210.

Thus began a journey that has taken me until now, at 54 to straighten out. Funny that eight months ago, when I was down 110 pounds my doctor wanted to put me on her "new" program... the same one from when I was 20! I RAN from her office and found a new doctor!

I would suggest you do the same, get a second opinion. Go to a practitioner or a holistic doctor, someone with real world experience. Find a blog group for PSOS and post your question there. Get a second opinion on the PCOS too. Is there a clinic at school?

Doctors are human, a second or third opinion won't hurt you, it can only help. No one, including the doctor, knows your body better than you! Listen to your body and burn more calories than you take in, get exercise and eat a balanced diet with good for you foods! After a month you'll be amazed how much you will enjoy and relish your healthy food!

I only wish I had a Calorie Count blog at your age! I'm down 150 pounds and have another 50 to go... but I'm enjoying the journey for the first time in my life, you have the opportunity to learn the lesson at a much younger age!
