Fitness Why are my toes tingling? Oct 21 2010

Thanks for the suggestions!  I am going to get a new pair of sneakers this weekend and keep them laced a little looser.  Most of the machines I use give me tingling toes, so I'll start with new shoes to see if there is  difference.  Thanks again everyone!

Weight Loss Scary Revelation Oct 21 2010

I think one of the biggest things that keeps me motivated is to have specific and meaningful goals and to obsess over those goals.  For example, my husband and I are planning a beach vacation for the end of January.

I think that I can be at my goal weight by the time if I really work hard.  So, I think about sitting on the beach in my new hot body.  Actually, I obsess over it, specifically when I am working out or tempted by guilty food.  I think of how it will feel to be proud of my body, I think of how smaller clothing will feel on my body, I think of how I won't have to hide in shame under my sundress.

I tend to have shorter goals to help me along the way too.  Like little achievements to get excited about.  For example, My friend is having a HalloweeParty on Nov 6.  I want to lose 4lbs by then, So I will feel a little better.  Then, I want to be 5lbs from my goal by New Years, So I will get to start the New year off by feeling good.

Then, I will make the last 5lbs and getting toned my New Years resoluation and then Memorial day weekend will be a new goal, and so on.  I find overlapping goals is especially helpful too.

I hope this helps!  It helped me get to my goal weight this past summer (but of course I gained back 20lbs over the summer).  Staying with it after I hit goal is the hardest for me!

If that is true, it certainly explains a lot!  I have never stopped(or limited) my caffeine(and I don't plan to any time soon), so I do not know.  But I would be very interested to know more if you find any info, please fwd it my way.

What is your deficit on the other 3 days?  If it is too big, that might cause you to get really hungry and tired every few days.

That is AWESOME!!!  I work in a customer service roll where I get (literally) the STUPIDEST questions ever.  The questions can be found in about 3 seconds by googling it, but instead they take the time to type out an email,  which annoys me no end (especially when they ask me questions about my competitors).  So thank you, I will be making a lot of use out of that site on Monday.

Go to tools and click on burn meter to see how many calories you burn per day.  Then, eat between 500 to 1000 calories less than that for a healthy weight loss rate.  500 cal deficit/day=1 lb a week, 1000= 2lbs/week.  It is unhealthy to lose more rapidly than that and 2lbs  week might be tough for your goals.

Although, please be sure never to fall below the recommended lowest calorie intake for your gender (I know womans is 1200 cals/day, but mens is much higher).  If your burn meter doesn't allow for a 500 cal deficit/day with out going below the mininum(mine doesn't) so work out to create the 500 cal deficit or deal with losing at a slower rate.

Our bodies need minimum calories to survive.  If you don't hit your minimum, eat until you do.  There is a possablitiy your body is in starvation mode(when you eat too little, your body gets scared of starving, so your metabolism drops and your body fights to hold onto it's excess fat reserve) and that could be  why you are not losing weight anymore.

I cheat.

I found foods that satisfy my cravings that are low calorie but still offer a good amount of nutrition considering that this is my bad craving food.

salty/carby craving=94% popcorn- at first it sucks without all the butter, but after awhile it really does taste just as great as the buttery kind AND popcorn is whole grains! (220 calories for the entire bag)

Sweet craving= s/f pudding with fruit mixed in with bit of low fat whipped cream (1pudding cup=60cal, fruit=maybe 75 cals, low fat whipped cream=about 10cals)

pure salt craving= pickles(5 cals/spear)

There are lots of ideas out there and there have been several postings on this topic.  Check them out- they work amazingly.

If you MUST have a fast food burger, compromise.  Order a salad(watch the dressing!) and eat it it before your fast food burger.  The damage will be a hell of a lot less than a side of fries with that meal.

But most importantly, PLAN AHEAD!  Don't wait til you are hungry to make your food choices.  I know I always overeat and make poor food choices if I wait til I am hungry to decide what to eat.

I am an apple shape too and I realized a long time ago that I will never be able to buy Missie's or woman's pants.  Junior size pants are fitted more for the apple shape and I never have a problem finding pants that fit.  I guess teens don't generally have hips yet.

On a typical day (mon-fri)

Breakfast- 1c cheerios, 1c skim milk, coffee w/ 2oz skim milk

Snack- 2 cups of varried fruit

Lunch- 2c mixed raw veggies (celery, carrots, cucumbers, cauliflour, mushrooms, radishes, brussel sprouts), 1oz 2% cheese, 2oz canned salmon w/1 tbsp fat free mayo, 8 rice crackers

Snack- either 100-calorie bag of popcorn or 1 instant oatmeal packet or rice cakes

Dinner- 3.5oz meat (chicken or fish), .5c steamed veggies, .5c potato (instant mashed, perogies or baked)

Snacks- Some combination of:  Popcorn, vitabrownies, glennys granola bars, canned peaches in water, jello, pudding, cheese stick, etc.

I stay away from large quantities of cheesy products (nachos, a cheese platter, mac n cheese, cheese fries, cheese steaks, cheesey dips, the list is infinite! - it's my favorite but very calorie-laden.

I also limit my drinking and when I do, I opt for lighter alcohol.  Instead of Blue Moon (hmmm) I will go for Heinikan Light.  Or if I am in an alcohol mood, I will skip the cosmo and order flavored vodka with club.

Don't worry about the weight so much as the fact that you are getting smaller and more fit.  I know, I know, I am obsessed with the scale to.

The same thing happened to me.  I started in January, lost 3lbs in 3 weeks and then for the entire month of Feb I did not lose a single pound but I was getting much smaller, clothes were looser and I was looking better.

My guess is that it was a combination of a few newby lbs of muscle, but mostly my muscles were retaining water to repair.  I love lifting weights but I was eating at a deficit so I couldn't have gained musle weight except for a few newby lbs.

So, Feb went by without loosing a lb and I decided to take a week off because I was so frusterated at working so hard and not seeing any results.  Well, the weight came shedding off.  I lost 4 lbs that week (I probably lost it in Feb but was retaining water in my muscles) .  BUT LET ME WARN YOU- it was SOO HARD to get back in the swing of things after that week off.

I notice now that my body holds onto weight for a few weeks if I am in a normal workout routine of weights and cardio (but still gets smaller) and then all of a sudden it sheds a few lbs.  It is a strange cylcle. It sucks when I'm stuck at a weight but so amazing when I see a big drop.

Still do the weights, it is great to have definition and you will still lose weight overall, just in weird increments (like nothing for a month and all of a sudden 4 lbs).

Stick with it!  Your scale being stuck is only temporary!

As a guy, allow me to annotate what's going on in his head as the conversation progresses:

Original Post by bairn:

Me: blahblahblah boring whinge blah blah I need to lose weight

Boyfriend: (oh crap oh crap OH CRAP! she's talking about weight... absolutely no good can come of this, it's one of those female topics where there ARE no right responses! Well let's try compliments, they're generally safest...) I think you look great. Don't they call it a "perfect 10" for a reason?

Me: blahblahblah BMI too high

Boyfriend: (Thank heaven and all the angels, she didn't corner me with "you're just saying that because you love me!". She's gone for facts instead, and this one I can actually refute!  I just might make it out of this intact!)BMI is rubbish

Me: yeah, I know. Sigh. Thank you, you're lovely. I am a silly girl, I know.

Boyfriend: (crap crap Crap CRAP!  now she thinks I've accused her of being emotional!!!  Women HATE that, and especially when they ARE being emotional!!!  Backpedal as fast as you can, dude!  Compliments!  pour on the compliments!) You weigh more than you used to because you are TONED. You have great legs and arms now. It's muscle.

Me: whinge, accuse self of being fat

Boyfriend: (Not working!!!  Now what?!?  Oh I am SO freakin' DEAD!  I can't directly contradict her, then I'm saying she's wrong and women hate that even more than being called emotional!  Maybe I nudge her toward thinking more objectively... talk about somebody else, that's a less mine-field-ridden subject anyway... who do I know that looks buff and isn't "fat"... oh hey!  Arnie!) Do people call ARNIE fat?

Me: deathly silence

Boyfriend: (CRAP, she's got That Look... but what did I do?  Think, man, think!  OH CRAP!  Arnie looks okay but he's a guy, she thinks I've just called her ugly!!!  Try to pull out a save, dude!) er, not saying you look like Arnie....

Me: deathly silence, very hard stare

Boyfriend: (No good!!!  Oh well, this has gone EXACTLY as well as I thought it would when she first brought up "her weight"...) *runs from room before I go all Conan on him*

HA!  I love it!  That is exactly what my fiance says is going on in his head!!!  Sometimes I will start the I'm-fat-whining thing just to torture him, lol.  Poor guy.  I can be so evil.

Bairn- It's true, talking to boys about weight is useless.  They will feed us the compliments to stay out of trouble and we won't believe what they say weather it is true or not.  It's better to whine to girlfriends, at least they will help us come up with solutions to fix the alleged fat.

I think adding creamer to coffee must be an American thing. I've never done it and have no idea what the stuff even is or why one would add it to coffee. I just add a little rice milk to mine or drink it black if I'm feeling brave.

As for things I don't count, bites of food I have while I'm cooking are calorie free, so are chips stolen from friends plates and the little square of chocolate I have each morning when I'm pmsing.

Creamer is like milk.  You know how 1%, 2% and whole milk have different levels of creaminess?  Well, creamer is waaaaayyyyy more creamy than whole milk.
