I love how everyone on these forums is a self-proclaimed expert. I had no idea I was in the midst of such greatness! Sorry, I am new to the internet. I did not realize that the opinions of people who claim they are educated is more valid than actual research. The next time I have a question about nutrition I will be sure to just ask you guys instead of looking it up, ok?

I'm sorry, I didn't realize the classes you took at your local community college made you an expert on pharmacology. I have not argued with you that medication can lower metabolism and also cause water retention, but not to the extent that you are arguing. You are acting as if those reasons play equally along with increased appetite, which they don't. Not only is eating more by the far most common cause, but it will cause much more weight gain faster than lowering metabolism. Even chemo drugs, which basically stall the metabolism altogether, cause a very slow weight gain. As for water retention, not only is there a limit to the amount of water the body can retain, but there are also many natural and prescription diuretics that take care of this problem. It baffles me that you actually think that fat can just appear on a person's body from just a pill. I guess magic really does exist! I am sorry that when people rely on logic and facts vs. what you perceive to be true that you get offended, but that's really not my problem. The whole point was that medication does not cause obesity, rather it causes the behaviors that lead to it. This means that behavior modification can result in weight loss even on medication. But by all means perpetuate this kind of nonsense. We are all just victims!

The Lounge Need to get some BS off my chest Aug 08 2012

I just wanted to let you know that my family has been stressing me out for years. Both of my parents have now passed so that makes life a little easier (and harder, too), but otherwise I have a few strategies that have helped me deal with their BS.

1) Do not try to fix them, even if your attempts are successful (and they almost never are) it is not your responsibility. Do not sacrifice yourself for people who do not want to help themselves. That being said, you can still love them and support them.

2) Don't let them drag you in the middle of their quarrels. Stay neutral and stay out of it.

3) If things get too crazy, take some time away from them. I know doing this seems like some sort of disloyalty to your family, but there comes a time when enough is enough.

I have done the crying over my family thing many, many times like yourself. It is very hard to find the place between "screw them" and "I need to save them." Good luck!

nadia - I said the majority of drugs that cause weight gain as a side effect do so by increased appetite. That is a fact, not my opinion. If you don't believe me, look it up and try to prove me wrong. Until then, go away.

wtfrail - Organics! Right, if it says organic it must be good for you! Mmm, this organic ice cream sure is healthy for me, I think I'll eat as much as I want!

i'd just like to point out that well some medications cause weight gain due to increase of appetite this is not the case for all of them.  Some medications make you retain substantial amounts of water well others do mess with your metabolism.  I've worked with mentally ill people who were put on new medication and gained 30 plus pounds in a month and that was certainly not due to an increase of food.  When it comes to things like medications that are prescribed for a variety of reason generalizations aren't really helpful at all.

There are very very few medications that cause weight gain by means other than increased appetite. Yes, there are exceptions to every rule, but generally speaking most people will not experience this. You know what it's not a generalization, it's science. Also, you did not conduct a study on those patients, so you have no idea what exactly was going on with them. I can tell you right now that there is no way any person eating a regular diet could gain 30 lbs of fat in one month even if their metabolism somehow completely stopped. So either it was a lot of water weight, or their intake was increasing more than you thought. How do I know this? It's called the law of conservation of mass.

Weight Loss Thoughts about Juicing... Aug 07 2012

Jayco - your argument is called an ad hominem attack, look it up, it makes you look ridiculous. You also have the grammar skills of a 12 year old, so I'm not sure if I can trust your guarantee that you know more than armandounc. First of all, I am not really sure where he said fasting was unhealthy, although that is completely irrelevant isn't it? I am pretty sure we were all talking about a juice-only diet, and yeah, actually there are plenty of scholarly articles (you know, real science) suggesting a juice-only diet is much more unhealthy than actually just eating the fruits and vegetables. I am not sure why you are so angry, but you should probably be more educated about how you are treating your body. Btw, it's "you're too dumb" not "your too dumb." Also, you might want to look up the definition of "hype."

Smashley - Yes, eating too little can lower your metabolism, but you have to eat much lower than the min. recommendation for men and women to see this happen. Your example of HCG users are a good example of the type of person who is messing with their metabolism. Btw, why do they have to take HCG if they are only eating 500 cals? I am basically talking about the type of people who eat less than they should to try to lose weight faster, end up bingeing, and then say they didn't lose weight until they increased their calories. There is a lot of denial going on and it keeps getting perpetuated.

Martha - Yup, science is science. We don't need books to tell us how to eat, but they exist because everyone is looking for an easy answer. Weight loss is hard, I understand the appeal of trying to find an easy answer, but following nutritional advice based on false information is where I draw the line.

Weight Loss Thoughts about Juicing... Aug 07 2012

I saw that documentary and it was pretty inspiring, but there is a lot of information out there that you might not be aware of. #1) the body is not full of "toxins" that need to be cleansed by crazy diets. Your organs do a really good job of this already, all you have to do is eat healthy and exercise and they'll do the rest. If you don't believe me, do some actual research. You will never hear a legitimate doctor tell you that you need to cleanse your body of the toxins because it's crazy talk. #2) fruits and vegetables are FAR healthier eaten whole. When you juice them you are stripping them of all of their fiber and just sucking down the sugar water that's left. Sure, you get a lot of nutrients through juicing, but you are getting zero protein, which by the way is necessary to live.

Juicing is really beneficial to sickly people because it crams them full of the vitamins they need to help heal and repair their damaged bodies. I should also like to mention that if you don't have a really good juicer (one that masticates and presses) then you're not going to be getting much out of the greens that you throw in and you are literally drinking sugar water all day. Drinking a large glass of juice from a juicer probably has more sugar in it than a soda, so think about what that is doing to your body's insulin levels.

I would like to be clear that I am not against juicing, or even short juice fasts. But in general it is wasteful and not a better substitution than a healthy diet.

Hi Teemix! I completely agree with everyone else that you should be eating more. Losing weight permanently takes changing the way you eat, so you are right to cut the junk and increase the fruits, veggies and whole grains. Yes, better foods are definitely more expensive, but hopefully you will save some money because you are not eating as much. I always try to plan out my meals and snacks in advance so that I only have to buy that much. Also, remember that while frozen fruits & veg are not as good as fresh, they are still much healthier than junk food and a lot easier on your budget. One of the reasons we all fall into junk food is that no one really cooks anymore. The more you cook from scratch, the more money you will save. You will also increase activity this way!

I just calculated your BMR (the amount of calories your body burns just to stay alive) and it said it was around 1850. If I were you I would try eating around 2000 calories a day for a while while continuing your exercise and see where that gets you. Just so you know, I used to weigh 278 and I was losing eating 2000 calories a day without any exercise. I currently weigh 185 and I eat 1750 and probably exercise about as much as you. Do not give up! You just have to figure out what works for your body. When I was heavier I tried eating at 1500 calories a day with no success, I was just too hungry.

I know it's hard and you are discouraged, but do not give up! Eating well and exercising has more benefits than just weight loss. You are taking care of yourself and that's what's really matters. Calorie Count is a wonderful community and there will always be support for you if you need it.

Weight Loss Myth about "permanent fat" ? Aug 06 2012

Your coworker is a terrible person, and also stupid. When we get fat, especially as children, not only do our fat cells expand but we also create more fat cells to accommodate the surplus. That means that the fatter you get, the harder it is to keep weight off because those fat cells are always screaming "feed me!" That being said, it's not impossible and lifestyle changes can make things way easier. The more weight you lose, the less hungry you feel. Exercise has a similar effect on appetite! I can tell you I have lost 92 lbs and am the smallest I've ever been as an adult, and there are plenty of other people like me who can prove your friend false.

Jaeger - when I was at my highest I could barely fit into the dueling dragons coaster. It was so embarrassing bc my hubby had to help me slam the bars in so they would snap. I didn't even have fun bc it was so uncomfortable. It was the first time in my life I thought "I'm that person, I'm the person who can't fit into seats!" I also broke a chair that week... Fun times, lol.

Weight of a nation - awesome documentary series by HBO. I recently found out it's FREE on vudu, which is on ps3, xbox, iPad etc... I highly recommend, very informative and inspiring.

Duchess - you are a machine! I always said if I had a baby I would breastfeed 'till the cows come home! Good for baby and mommy and way cheaper than formula! Congrats on the super weight loss so far!

If you feel like you can drink in moderation why are you asking for advice for how to drink in moderation? You said yourself that you don't have control over how much you drink and then you have unhealthy binges afterwards. I know you are looking for ideas for how to stay in better control while still going out, but that's like if someone said "I'm trying to lose weight, but every time I go to the chocolate factory I eat 4 more chocolates than I intend with all my chocolate eating friends and then I go home and eat more." Of course you could try all sorts of tricks to try and resist the temptation, but the obvious answer is to stop going, or stop going as often. Judging by the way you describe your relationship with alcohol, I'd say some time away would do you good. If your friends won't socialize in any place but bars it's time to get new friends.

I figured it was mostly me just reading into it too deeply; I know that he doesn't mean it in any kind of rude or disrespectful way, but it's hard to hear a compliment of "You look better now" and not hear "you looked bad before now".

Right, he probably wasn't intending to hurt your feelings, however that doesn't mean that your feelings are invalid. I think you did the right thing by talking it over with him and I personally think that it is never appropriate to make comments about specifically about a person's weight unless they open the conversation. A simple "you look great" is all someone needs to say if they want to be nice, it is not necessary to be specific.

eatclean - Trust me, I have tried tea tree many times even just using a diluted drop with my moisturizer... burn burn burn. But I am the type of person that gets chemical burns from household chemicals that most people don't use with gloves :(

Musicmeg - Thanks for the tip, now I know what to look for!

Eatclean - go to Macy's... I have a couple sports bras from there that are like freakin' pressure bandages or something. One of them I bought when I was a double D and now I'm a small C and it still holds tight.

*edit* I'm pretty sure they're Champions. If you are looking for one with a tight fit, get one with a front zipper bc they are WAY easier to get on. Otherwise, as long as you get one with the thick material & reinforced stitching you're golden. Oh, they sell them at Sports Authority too.

Musicmeg - I will look into it! I have ridiculously sensitive skin and even diluted tea tree burns like a mother, never tried witch hazel, tho. I have used diluted apple cider vinegar in the past with great results in reducing discoloration. Like you, I have been on a natural route as it seems to be the lesser of two evils!

Erm... You just said that you can't have just one drink and then you said you don't want to quit drinking so...

I know I can have just one drink but I couldn't do that with cigarettes. You basically have to be honest with yourself. If your nights out are important to you, earn them. Have a small breakfast and small lunch and budget those calories for beer. You'll probably have to add more exercise those days too. Maybe you'll find that it's not worth it and drink a little less or maybe you will work harder at budgeting in those cals.

I am pretty sure that my acne is caused by inflammation. It's very mild now, but I still have to scrub it every day or I will have crazy blackheads. The clarisonic helped me a lot. I was also told that if I ever want completely clear skin I would have to have extraditing done 1-2 times a week (too expensive) or go on Accutane. I have thought about it, but I'm not sure I want to do that to myself!

Oh I totally understand. I have in-laws that I only see a few times a year and every time I see them they make comments like "wow, you have a waist!" It's really uncomfortable and I never know if they are trying to be nice or not.

I don't really understand what you mean by get "stuck" inside of you, because I don't think that's actually biologically possible without some major consequences. If you feel as if you digest those foods slowly or have digestive problems as a consequence, you might want to talk to your doctor about getting tested for things like chrone's disease, gallbladder disorders, diabetes or even allergies to dairy, wheat, etc...

That being said, you could just avoid those things altogether. You could have a 100% balanced and satisfying diet without eating any of those foods. Obviously you still need some fat in your diet. Also, increasing exercise especially if you have a sedentary lifestyle right now will help you digest food more efficiently. Good luck, and the more educated you become about how your body works the more successful you will become in your journey to become more healthy.
