Hello,
There are a few other men around, and I'm sure they will introduce themselves when they log on.
This place can and does get entertaining at times, which is great because it gets rid of cobwebs.
Well, welcome to the lounge hope you stick around, new blood is always needed
BTW, Rain Bows is a Vampire.
Do we know the kcals in a pint?
Speaking of the undead.
I thought they'd gotten to you.
Judicious use of the trusty wooden stake! Live to post another day! Hope you're in good condition Kevin!

techies: i need an alternative to windows |

Original Post by theviewfromhere:
i got a new ultrabook a little over a month ago - a samsung new series 9. it's a really beautiful machine, but in order to keep it thin and light, i went with one with a small HD, as i already have a good-sized external drive. i didn't anticipate how much of the hard drive would be filled by windows 8 and office (home & student). i'm looking for recommendations for smaller, simpler software that's still windows compatible (primarily word and ppt).
thoughts? thanks in advance!
Replacing the OS could be a nightmare for someone who isn't a techie, especially on a notebook format machine, as you may find it difficult to get the drivers you require. However replacing the MS office software is much easier, you could go cloud and use Google applications free. You could download a free or shareware alternative, I use Libre office myself, which I find excellent. The price is really good.
I am strongly considering going completely Android for all my computing requirements but it's not quite as easy as you might expect. If I was ostensibly home and office based it would be easy, as i would use cloud applications. However I am out in the wilds often, and local applications and data is a necessity whilst away from the WWW. It's not entirely WW yet!

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers out there. You are the bedrocks of the families and we all are thankful.
Agreed!
We celebrate Mother's day at a different time. I hope my US friends had a lovely celebration of motherhood!

"Coming out" to my parents as an atheist |

Original Post by fade_the_great:
Religion was an inescapable part of my childhood. My dad was a conservative Christian pastor and my mom was a Sunday school teacher. Both of my parents had masters degrees in Bible studies. They indoctrinated me with their beliefs from a very early age. My parents are divorced now, but they continue to serve God. My dad has become a Christian life coach, public speaker, and author. My mom has retired and spends most of her time volunteering at her church.
They will be devastated when they find out I'm an atheist.
That is why I've kept my atheism a secret for years. My best friend Emilie is stuck in a similar situation. She is a closeted lesbian. I asked her why she hasn't come out to her family yet. She said it's because she doesn't want to cause them "unnecessary pain". After talking to her, I began to see the parallels between her situation and mine. That got me thinking.
Keeping my atheism a secret is only hurting myself. My family should know who I am. More importantly, they should love me for who I am, not for someone I pretend to be. If they decide to ostracize me because I'm an atheist, that's their loss. I am not responsible for their reaction. All I'm responsible for is me. I owe it to myself to tell them the truth.
As our conversation drew towards an end, I promised Emilie I would "come out" as an atheist. Not only for myself, but also for her. Hopefully my act of bravery will inspire similar acts of bravery in her and in others.
So here I sit, wondering how to break the news to my parents. Have any of you had similar experiences? Do you have any words of encouragement you'd like to share?
As I Christian parent I love my children unconditionally. I hope your parents do too, which may make it easier to discuss your position on faith.
Of course it will be something they will need to come to terms with, so expect some questions on how and why, and prepare answers that truly reflect your position without denigrating theirs. They will understand that they have no empirical evidence for their beliefs, and should understand that others can be sincere in not following the Christian faith.
This may seem an odd suggestion but it may help to have a chat with a pastor to find the best approach. They will understand your position and may help you articulate your position, a sort of rehearsal.
