Weight Loss Embarrassing Question. May 20 2011

I agree with most of what others have already said. You may want to evaluate your diet for fiber intake (too little or too much, soluable or insoluable) Here is a really comprehensive webpage about fiber: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutr ient&dbid=59

Just a caution - laxatives (chemical and natural, excluding fresh foods) should be taken as a last resort. The body can become dependent on them so that you are unable to have a bowel movement without the laxatives. So if you decide to use them, be careful to follow the package directions on quantity and duration!

That's really good! I was excited about my 0.2 loss this morning (to a 189.8) so comparatively, 4 lbs is something to be happy about! And you're doing it the right way too - eating right and physical activity, and sounds like your plan is sustainable... so yeah, great job & keep it up!

Vegetarian Eat To Live.... Thoughts?? Apr 01 2011

I have read the book. I think it's a good level of nutrition information written in a way that's easy to understand. I don't like how much the book pushes veganism as a weight loss strategy, but the book "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell also promotes vegan eating from a disease prevention standpoint, so I do believe there is something to vegan eating.

I went vegetarian when I was four (just refused to eat "animals" not that I understood then that vegetarianism was a "real thing"). Went off eggs around age 18, because they'd always kinda grossed me out. So last March, all I really had left was dairy. I've been vegan for a little over a year (though I still eat some products that contain honey for convenience), and I'm quite happy with it. I take an iron supplement because I'm just one of those people with chronic anemia. I'm still overweight, but no longer obese (lost about 25 lbs, being vegan causes me to automatically check food labels, so I tend to make better and healthier food choices as a result). As I see it, I was vegetarian for moral reasons and I'm vegan for personal health.

Morningstar Farms products (like veggie burgers, sausage links, burger crumbles...) are all vegetarian and pretty user-friendly. They're in frozen food section and common to find in grocery stores (Wal-mart carries Morningstar Farms and Boca products, for example). Vegan meat substitutes are a little harder to find and generally more expensive.

Foods OMG, either Crystal Light needs to make low sodium chicken broth flavor, or I need some salty, NON high sodium snack ideas? Nov 11 2010

V8 tomato juice is fairly low in sodium and calories both. Air popped corn with just a splash of popcorn oil or butter flavored spray and a sprinkle of salt is a good treat - not as much "bad" stuff as a microwave bag of popcorn. When I have a bad sodium craving that I just can't shake I will eat a few olives or pickles. Also - for some reason oranges/clementines/kiwis end my salt-cravings.

I've been hanging around 202 all week, which I think is great - considering I was hanging around 222 for a few years! I'm optimistic that I will reach my "under 200" goal by the new year.

I have been wanting to try yoga. I'm not comfortable enough to do it in a group/class setting. Any book or DVD title recommendations?

Vegetarian Vegetarian...and hair. Nov 05 2010

That's interesting, I've been a lifelong vegetarian/now vegan and so have nothing to compare with. But I do get compliments from hair dressers that my hair is thick, healthy, yet still fine. Makes me wonder now!

Vegetarian How do you inspire your kids to eat Vegetarian food? Nov 05 2010

The PDQ Vegetarian Cookbook is pretty kid-friendly. It's one of those "5 ingredients or less" cookbooks that use a lot of prepackaged things, but the recipes are easy to modify to more complex meals. And just flipping through it at the library tends to spark ideas.

But here's an idea more for right now: Toddlers tend to like to feed themselves. So depending on their exact age (and how good their chewing is), I would recommend serving raw or lightly cooked veggies (like carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, tomatoes, bell pepper strips, sugar snap peas, etc) as a snack along with something to dip into (like peanut butter, ranch dressing, cheese sauce, etc). The kids get the satisfaction of feeding and choosing the veggies for themselves, and you get to see their preferences without starting a "clean plate club".

You may also want to find a few picture books that feature a likable character eating veggies. I remember my younger brother loved a book called "Barney's Alphabet Soup" and was willing to eat the things he recognized from the book. Kinda silly I guess, but kids do learn from what they see around them!

Up a bit, but I'm still happy 'bout it. It's a whole lot less than I weighed when this group began! I made it to the gym twice this past week and walked the dog three days.

I'm fitting comfortably into XL sweats and I'm back into size 18 jeans. It'll be real exciting when I: [1] make it to under 200 and [2] out of the size 18 jeans.  (It's been about 8 years, and I'm 22, so....)

What are other folks doing for diet/exercise this week?

Vegetarian Vegan chewing gum? Oct 09 2010

This is interesting, I have never heard of gum not being vegan (except for gelatin, of course). I know some kinds of gum with "bursting freshness beads" and those with fruity centers contain gelatin. But others do not. I'm interested to hear more about this...

Goal by New Years: under 200

Total Lost: 9.8 pounds

I feel much better, this is the best I've ever done with weight loss, usually I lose a pound then gain two! However, I think my weight loss is going to slow down now, since I'm over the initial "fat person losing tons of weight all at once" thing and now I'm moving into the steadier weight loss phase. I don't feel thinner, but I feel less achy, so that's a big ol' plus!

Doh, keep forgetting to post on Fridays...

9/17: 209.6 lbs

9/24: 207.0 lbs

2.6 lb weight loss in a week!

I've spent the last several days stuck around 207, but... I am okay with that! I have lost 20 lbs from my highest point, and about 10 lbs recently, so I feel great! Still not happy about how I look, but heck, my feet don't hurt all the time now, can't beat that! :)

@thejoyfulloser Thanks for keeping up the group, even though you're not actively participating. I think health and fitness related goals are just as effective (and more important) than simple weight and number related goals. So kudos to you!

This week I'm going to try to walk the dog or do a DVD workout or go to the gym everyday. No excuses! (and I'll try to actually post on Friday for a change! lol)

Took an unexpected trip (to help my big bro move across the country) so no internet access for a loongg time!

My last reported weight was on 8/20: 213.6

Today, 9/17 I am: 209.6 lbs!

I've been as low as 209.4 and up to 211.2 this past week. I'm just really glad that hanging with my brother and eating out a lot of meals didn't cause me to gain weight. Guess carrying loads up boxes up two flights of stairs did help out... eating vegan helps too, with restaurant choices.

I'm definitely hoping now that I can hit the 200 (or below) mark by the new year!

I go with my mom about twice a week. One day is for groceries at a bulk discount store, and the other is for smaller items at either walmart or a specialty store like Trader Joe's.

Good grief. I think on Thursday "gotta remember to post tomorrow" and then I don't remember to post until Saturday or Sunday! Sheesh.

My weight this Friday was: 213.6 lbs (+1.2 from last week, but expected since last week was over 4 lbs loss)

I think I'm on track ~ counting calories or at least writing down foods eaten, trying to move every day. My dog's great for that. No more sitting and playing fetch with her, now we go for walks! Don't know who's loving it more - me or her!

@bigdogmommy - Keep it up! under 200 is a HUGE (pun intended) goal for me too! Tongue out
