Weight Loss What's the best way to help my little brother lose weight? Mar 10 2010

Regarding the sodas:  If the boys insist on drinking soda's, have your dad get something that is 0 calories/0 sugar/ 0 carbs or something to that effect.  Purposefully getting sodas that the boys will not necessarily like, so that they have the mindset that there is soda in the house, but not the kind they like...

If they dislike the soda enough, they will resort to drinking water or milk.

Then, when the sodas sit there long enough, there is less soda to be bought until they eventually realize that they like water/milk better than soda.

May not work, but it's worth a try...  My kids prefer water over soda now. Even at a restuarant, they will order milk, water, or tea.

Diet Dr. Pepper works for my husband, he can't taste much of a differance. Also propel (the way gatorade does water...ha ha) only 20 cals a bottle and if they drank it all day long it would be about as many calories. as a coke

I recommend checking what this site says, it does a little better at calorie deficit checking than CC's tools do:

http://www.phord.com/cc/

For activity level you'd be "lightly active" or "a little more active".  With those and your stats plugged in it'll give you how much you can safely lose per week.  It uses your BMR (the calories your body needs just to function even if you're in a coma) as the minimum number you need to eat.

As for how you lose the calories, it's lots easier to exercise more than to eat less.  For me anyway, and maybe for you too.  And if you want a larger loss rate than you can safely get with your current activity level, your only (safe) choice is increasing your activity level.

For how much to eat on non-exercise days, there's two schools of thought.  One is to calculate your daily average burn from your total burn rate in a week and eat that much every day.  The other is to maintain a constant deficit by "eating your exercise calories" on the days you exercise.  I do the second - it's a great motivation to exercise more - but other people swear by the first.  Whichever works best for you would be fine.

(80schick, your math is off - it's 500 calories/day deficit for 1lb/week)

JP & 11 your right ( I'll fix that now). Sorry for the bad info Ryan. So 500, for 1 lb. and 1000 for 2. Personally my deficit is about 750 a day ( F 5'6" 216 lbs lightly active I don't work out can't right now do to my dr. worrying it will worsen my vertigo) my burn is 2370 and I am on a 1625 cal. diet. I loose between 1.5-4 lbs a week depending on the week, the time of month, sodium intake, etc. (I am still significantly over weight, however 216lbs. and have lost 72) I am usually within 700 up or down of my goal for the week meaning I eat at least 1525 and not more than 1725 cals. a day with an average of 1625 my cals stay about the same each week but my weight loss varies quite a bit, and yes I do log everything except gum, water, and tea. The best thing you can do is lead by example. Get the rest of the family involved in making healthier choices, and talk to your parents about getting the junk out of the house. Get him involved in sports or just get out and get active together, play catch, basket ball, whatever he is interested in, this can be great for both of you physically and for your relationship! Honestly, I don't think it matters. Skinny, fat, people are going to judge each other. Your fat, your lazy. Your skinny, your compulsive. Your average, skinny people think your too fat, and vice verse. I think the most important thing is to concentrate on how you feel and on your health. Speak up when someone makes an ignorant comment. If I was you I'd say; I am working on getting healthier and my doctor thinks I am doing a great job. Or; I know it's weird for you too see me healthy, but I am healthy. Or even a smart **** comment like; do you even know what a BMI is? And to the people close to you who are concerned about your health I would say; I am at a healthy weight and I am working on getting fit, I wish you had spoken up when I was ___ lbs. and at increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and cancer, that is when you should have been concerned for my health. You have 17 weeks until your goal date. I would suggest going for 2 lbs. a week to begin because weight loss will slow as you go. A deficit of 1000 cal's a day will put you at a loss of 2 lbs a week, a deficit of 500 a day will have you losing 1. Also if you already have a deficit, I'd suggest eating 300 cal's more on work out days, you will be hungrier on those days and you don't want to feel deprived and end up over eating. Also make sure you are getting plenty of water, fruits, and veggies. Sarah

Thank you ladys for the spport! I cried typing this out in my diet journal today. I am at 220 far from my 145 goal, but after loosing 67 lbs and reaching close to half of my goal I realized, that this weight is a sheild that I do not need. I deserve to be the best me I can be, now I feel I have the strength to have the outside match up with the inside. I wish I could have had this revelation a while back, but I feel like today is the first day of the rest of my life. Sarah

I started at 289 and I lost at least 50 lbs before anyone who didn't already know I was trying to loose weight noticed. By the time I bought any new clothes I had already lost 60 lbs and 10 pants sizes, everyone notices now that my clothes fit. Sarah

Haven't WW always advocated the "a calorie is a calorie" theory...

Yes, which is a terrible strategy, technically, you could have a 100% fat diet, but even WW would would advise against it if asked.

That stuff at McDonalds is just bad news, little to no nutritional benefits at all.  I can find a good restaurant or make something with some nutritional value if I want to stray from a strict diet occasionally.  I stopped eating at any fast food places, haven't had any since a McDonalds on I-90 July 2, 2009 when I was driving to New York City, and in that timeframe, I've lost 75 lbs. and overall health improved drastically.  I'd be afraid of what that crap would do to my GI system if I ate it (I'm saving that for an experiment).

 yep its called Atkins!

Weight Loss "Goal Date" keeps going up??? Mar 04 2010

Original Post by minerva_moon:

If you do not record your weight in the weight log for that day, the goal date will increase (as it's assuming your weight is not moving). If you log your weight, it will remain steady/get closer depending on your rate of weight loss.

This has been true for me, it seems the more I loose the closer my goal date gets. My personal goal is set for July 27th, originally cal count had my expected goal date at Oct 2011, now its somtime in Aug. 2010. Hopfully soon enough the goal date will match up with mine. It seems it is based on the rate at which you are loosing on average and it changes for me every time I put a new weight in, but I do not look at it except on weigh days. Sarah

Jamibuch, Weight issues are depressing, I think anytime you feel powerless life is a strugle. I am glad you have a man who loves you for who you are, it takes a lot of strength to get to where you are, it is a long road. It is nice that you have such a supportive friend and somone to lean on who understands! Moms seem to be taking the cake as far as discouragers go today, Im guessing she may not be to famillar with healthy cooking or maybe she just does not get htat one meal can make a big differance. Sarah

Silviar, I think your BF sounds great, my husband loves to encurage me this way, I still have not quite learned how to take it. It sucks that your mom cant find a positive way to discus the weight thing, it can be a touchy subject. Does she have a weight issue? has she ever? Maybe she just dosen't understand how she is affecting your self esteem. Sarah

Kay, Hubbys are winning in the support section today, but I guess his cheesy baked potatos could be ones worst enemy. I guess this is where I should be happy I handle all uor family fod myself. Sarah

I totally get that Kim, Sarah

Paula, It's good you have friends you can ccount on sometimes they are more than friends! As far as your mom, sadly it seems her negative attitude towrd you and your weight has rubbed off. Remember that external beauty is only one kind, self distuctive talk can lead to self ditructive behavior. Take the time every day to tell yurself you are beautiful inside and out! I have a friend I met on a support board when I was going through ffrtility issues, we still talk on the phone and are great friends though we have never met face to face (I live in W she lives in NY) she has been a blesing and support to me as Chloe has to you, networking is a great way to find support! Sarah
