Hi everyone, Jumping in a bit late, before I post the new thread for this week...which I will do a touch later today. I would also agree with a smaller group. When I have a busy week - and lately, it seems like they're ALL super-busy - I find it daunting to read through and focus on everything late in the week, especially when I have other pressing deadlines and am likely already sleep-deprived. Right now, this group is the only thread reminding me that I wanted to do something about my health...everything else has pretty much crashed and burned. Oh yes - and I'm 'voluntarily' working the weekend as part of my job...yet again. It's become systemic. I've worked three out of the last four weekends...while also working the entire week as well. At least this last week, the hours have been fairly normal i.e. no 16 hour days etc. And while I love my job, I'm getting a little p'd at the automatic assumption that 'good ol' Val' will yet again pitch in and get everything done, irregardless of the damage it is doing to my life. I don't get paid for it, BTW - in theory I'm supposed to take some time off (ha!). Anyway, better grab some coffee and get back to it.

I don't do them - and I should because I have plenty of negative self-talk in my head. Right now I'm trying to overcome several weeks of work-induced sleep deprivation. Resistance and organization is at an all-time low - so perhaps some of the excellent thoughts posted above will help nudge me back on track. Keep well, Val

My motivation is currently shot all-to-hell since we've had a deluge of work-based issues and extra work, major projects, and business trips and ... well ... I'm halfway through working a stretch of 20 days straight - most of them for more than eight hours. So, since I'm only home for two days in the middle of it - and all the food in my fridge had turned into science experiments by the time I got home late Wednesday - I haven't been doing as well as I'd like. I did eat well about two out of every three meals, because I pre-cooked and froze some lean meats before leaving on the eight-day project trip and then used frozen veggies and my steamer. But every once in a while, I got so tired of the veggie-lean meat-rice cake combos that I broke down and ate out...although I was only super-indulgent twice: Indian food late one night while waiting for a print run and the post-project tradition: breakfast at De Dutch (yum!) And I do stress eat, but it tends to be cheerios. I can get a lot of nibbling out of a 110-cal cup of cheerios. Workout? Gym? Ha! The only workout I've done since this started was this morning...and AFAIK, I'm back on the road tomorrow. (I did an extra workout just before I left but...) I don't know how to work around that - I brought some small exercise equipment with me thinking I might do some stuff in the hotel room but when I'm working 12 to 16 hours a day, I just can't seem to find the focus to add an exercise regime. The frustrating part is that this happens every few months, so I work my ass off logging and exercising - and then work strikes with a major project, and I slide right back to where I was. Okay... I could probably stop whining now, couldn't I? - Val the currently grumpy |

THANK YOU tiegurl for asking about one of my favourite topics in the world - namely, my dog. ;-) Shade is a Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie). Some people describe these dogs as 'miniature collies', although they are an entirely separate herding breed which originally developed on the Shetland Islands. Shade is a bi-black, which is an unusual colour for Shelties. More commonly, they are "lassie" coloured, with gold to brown coats, white ruffs and fronts, white paws etc. There are also blue merle Shelties, which is like a dappled grey. In his book, Stanley Coren describes Shelties as the sixth most intelligent breed for obedience/dog sports etc. What is even more important than intelligence is that they are very willing to please, so easy to train. Thank you re. the weight loss. At the moment, though, I'm having trouble continuing to lose the last 15 to 20 pounds, despite gym time and watching what I eat. Weird - and quite frustrating! Keep well, Val |

Thread is now posted. Sorry for missing the post last week - I'm normally busy but it is now getting craaaazzzyyy... and will continue so for the next month at least. To answer last week's question - and apologies for those to whom this is old news - my inspiration for losing weight this time was my four-pawed furchild, Shade. We were taking agility class together and I realized:
So I started with the goal of losing - oh - some weight and getting - oh - somewhat fit and somehow I just kept going and going and going ... and to my current astonishment, this 50-plus year old body is now 70 pounds lighter and going to boot camp workouts and has real honest-to-gawd muscles. Holy Cow! Plus Shade and I now run agility - see here! I still need to work on running faster, shaving off 10 to 15 more pounds, but I'm happy with the overall outcome (minus the four pounds or so that crept back that I'm now trying to remove). Speaking of outcomes, that leads me to a topic for this week... What is the best UNEXPECTED reward you've earned so far in your weight loss/healthy lifestyle journey? |

On this topic, I can sympathize with Claire's approach. Sometimes, just getting through the challenge or transition while holding the line is enough for me. I'm going through that right now because I've had to curtail my usual physical activity for the last 10 days. I was at a boot camp workout, jumped off a Bosu Ball and twisted my ankle. I spent the first few days almost unable to walk ... I was doing an Igor-style hobble-stagger ... and a weekend with my foot mostly elevated and iced at intervals. It's slowly getting better and I'm now doing workouts 3X a week that don't put strain on my ankle but it still means that boot camps, the elliptical/treadmill etc. will probably have to wait another week. And V-day ... sigh! ... there is now chocolate in the house. And I have zilch resistance ... Keep well,

Sorry everyone - posted the thread and went away to think about a topic... then started sorting type and forgot! So here's a belated topic - or rather - a pair of topics... 1. FREE VENT - let loose with whatever is currently bugging you, trivial or not. 2. When you are in vent/depressed/stressed or whatever mode that in pre-CC days might have led to you reaching for the chocolate/chips/cookies etc., what do you now substitute? I hope that's clear... I'll start with an example... Every once in a while I have a heavy-duty deadline that elevates my stress levels and pins me to the computer for long stretches. At such times, I drop into stress-nibbles mode. My current 'substitution' is cheerios, since the multi-grain version are 110 calories a cup, are a bit sweet, and a cup of cheerios is a LOT of nibbling if you tackle them one at a time like tiny little donuts. (Yes, I know about carrot sticks, but when I'm in stress-nibble mode, carrot sticks don't do it for me.) Your turn... ;-) Keep well, Val |

Love the topic and the link. Thanks, Claire. I've found both exercise and diet are necessary for me to lose weight. I've lost significant amounts of weight four times in my life but this last experience has been the most successful and the first time I incorporated formal weight training as part of the exercise. I'm currently on track although I'm logging on paper and not online. My previous trainer left at Christmas for her dream job in another province, so I'm now working with a new trainer. She's given me her version of a diet sheet, which I'm mostly following and recording. We'll see how it works. The good thing is that it has me mostly back on track and - to date - I've managed to drop two of the extra pounds I'd picked up over the past few months. Exercise-wise I've been hitting the gym six times a week until this past Tuesday - I've been sidelined by a snow dump and lack of snow tires. I may venture out tonight though and I did get some exercise yesterday shovelling snow. Snow is a bit unusual here and never lasts long, which is why I don't invest in snow tires. I know I'm hosting this coming week. Keep well, Val |

I finally returned to the gym last night after the Christmas hiatus. (The gym didn't shut down but I did... I worked up a good sweat on the elliptical and came away feeling pretty good. I have a boot camp session tonight. So I'm gradually easing into a place where I can hopefully make my goals this time.
Many thanks and keep well, Val

Debbie, I really like that annual journalling idea as a way of measuring personal progress. Sometimes I think we overlook what we HAVE accomplished and only focus on what still needs to be achieved. Journalling daily or even weekly wouldn't happen in my life - but I can see the value of an annual checklist. May I steal? (((HUGS))) for what you are going through - I think it is absolutely understandable that other life events have overtaken your goals. But you have not forgotten your goals and will return to them when life allows. Also, in addition to a note, I wanted to send you an e-card but I don't have your e-mail address. Could you please send it to me? PM? Keep well, Val |

Here it is: http://apps.facebook.com/innovation_challenge / I cannot post a direct link to the video. So, to quickly find my video, just type: Valorie ... or ... Lennox ... or Valorie Lennox in the search box at the upper right, above the thumbnails of the entries. That will open my video. Thumbnail image is a "2" in an old-fashioned projector count-down screen and the working name of the video is Road Ranger. It is a lonely little wallflower video, hidden away on the back pages of 111 entries so would appreciate as many visits as possible. You can vote daily between now and January 5 when polling closes. Votes count for 20% of the final judging. As an additional bonus, Nissan is giving away three Toshiba tablets to voters. My entry is quite different than most - which is either very good or very bad. (BTW, it is a facebook page - some people tell me they can vote with no problem even if they don't have a facebook page and some people tell me they must have a facebook log-in to vote. So ... I don't know if a facebook page is required to vote or not.) Many, many thanks ... you will notice how hard you had to twist my arm to get the voting details... Season's greetings and keep well, Val |

Topic for this week... Last week we talked about how to advise people making a New Year's resolution to lose weight. Great topic that I would like to take a step further by asking... 1. Do you make New Year's resolutions? 2. When you have made New Year's resolutions, have you found them to be helpful or not? I'll start by admitting that I generally don't make New Year's resolutions, simply because for me the resulting resolutions tend to be short-lived. I think it is because a date is insufficient inspiration... I usually need a more compelling reason to adopt and stick to a lifestyle change. Plea for clicks... Off-topic ... I've mentioned my time-consuming video project in a previous post. It is now online and - well - frankly, it needs votes. If you're willing to give me some clicks between now and January 5, let me know and I'll send along the link. Greatly appreciated. Keep well, Val |

I just reach for the cookies.... BAD VALORIE!! Sadly, there isn't much in the world that chocolate won't fix, is there? However, I shall have minimal family contact this year, hence minimal anticipated drama. Keep well, Val ... briefly surfacing from amateur video production hell...

Well... I'm managing to get to the gym fairly regularly but I'm not managing to count calories very well. However I did get some healthier food into the fridge, so at least the meals are within normal specs, meaning at least half vegetables on the plate. I dealt with the Xmas cookie overload crisis by putting all the Christmas baking in the custody of my tenant. So that led to rationing because in order to get a cookie, I have to go ask for one. I'm still eating cookies - I DID mention I have NO willpower, right? - but it is now in moderation - one or two a day. I will try to post a recipe later. I'm super busy at the moment because a large new project with a tight deadline has suddenly popped into my life. I entered an online contest - from a very reputable company - seeking marketing concepts. From what looks like thousands of entries, my submission was selected as one of the 200 semi-finalists. I received the e-mail Tuesday and had to confirm participation by Thursday. The next step requires me to make a short video outlining my concept. The video is due in 10 days from confirmation. From these videos, the company will choose five finalists. I decided to go for it, although it means long hours at the computer and putting Xmas preparation on hold. I also have a full-time job and several fixed responsibilities which I cannot eliminate, so it's tight. So now I'm diving back into my project, including learning how to use the software I picked up Friday night. (I decided trying to produce a video on a super-tight deadline without some sort of video-editing software was the stuff of madness.) Wish me luck! Keep well,

Housekeeping questions: 1. Is the MIA list correct? 2. Is Getting Healthy I Am still a member? The comment in last week's thread wasn't entirely clear for me. 3. Do we have any new members or new spaces in the waiting list... let me know and I'll update.
TOPIC for this week... Okay - so you fell off the wagon. We all do it - and are probably going to do it somewhat more over the next month, during the season of over-indulgence. What is your best "recovery" strategy for a slip off the wagon? Please share - we may all need a good toolkit of 'recovery' strategies to survive the holidays with our waistlines intact. Keep well, Val |
