| mrsrocket, are your cleats adjustable laterally? It might be possible to reposition them on the sole of your shoes, to place your foot further from the bike centerline (effectively a larger Q factor). Do you have a significant degree of "cant" or bend in your leg, such that you are knock-kneed? Have your husband look at your legs from behind as you pedal. | |||

I love cycling, and ride my bike every day, to the point where I only drive every couple of weeks nowadays. But cycling does have a few issues, as exercise goes.
First, most people cycle in a rather leisurely manner. A bicycle is very efficient. Traveling at 15 mph (on flat ground without wind) does not take very much effort. It will burn only around 300-400 calories/hour. Most people I see on stationary bikes aren't even doing that. They pedal at a mild cadence (like 60 - 70 rpm) at a pretty low resistance, their heart rate doesn't get high, they are chewing up a lot of time for not a lot of calorie burn or cardio benefit. It is better to push yourself harder - higher cadence (100 +), higher resistance, get your heart rate up (>160 bpm for me), really get something out of the time. You won't need 60 minutes. Second, actual riding on the road is a lot more fun than sitting on a stationary bike, and tends to be better exercise too. On the road you have to climb hills, chase yellow lights, fight winds, accelerate from stops. It ends up being more like interval work - or it can be, of course you can also dawdle along a flat bike path and get minimal exercise. I think spin classes are meant to simulate actual road riding. Third, if you have the seat too low, you are putting extra strain on your knees. Add a higher resistance level, and you can hurt your knees. Make sure your knee is close to straight when the pedal is in the lowest position. If you place your heels on the pedals, your legs should be completely straight at that lowest pedal position, but you should be able to keep your hips pretty level - not rocking your hips to reach the pedals. |

| I think doing it on a stationary bike would be harder. Psychologically, it helps (me) to have other riders to chase. When I was on a lonely stretch, I sometimes got spaced out, and wished for a bike computer that would alert if my speed dropped below X mph. | |||

Running after pre-school age kids is essentially alternating periods of walking, standing, sitting, and maybe yelling :-) with the occasional 10 foot "run" and 30 lb "lift".
Pilates burns something like 250 cal/hour, according to most sources, which is similar to walking. So the answer is, you're on your feet some, it is more than being sedentary, it is not getting your heart rate up to any sort of "target" cardio range, it is not building muscle, so is it "exercise"? I think the answer is clear enough. |

If I tried, probably.
I think it matters. If OP directs us to pictures of a runway model's thigh, versus if she directs us to pictures of a fitness model's thigh, or a sprinter's thigh - it should make a difference in what advice you give her. Achieving those different looks will require different means.

What do you want them to look like? Can you post links to photos of your "ideal thigh".

Her food is ridiculous and trivial. When you drench everything in butter, it is going to be tasty, you're not exactly stretching yourself.
Her ethics are repellent. Glamorize the unhealthiest possible food, then disclaim any responsibility by saying its just "entertainment" and people have to be "responsible"? Doesn't work for the local meth seller either. I'm not surprised she has diabetes, and I won't be surprised when she dies of cardiac failure. |

Recall the thread about smoking and calorie burn? The effect is small but could add up over 3-4 months. Add not logging snacks, and the deficit could easily be a surplus.
Also, have you recalculated your BMR etc based on your new weight? The other possibility is that you are pregnant. |

My contribution to the cause.
Here is a system of ranking a woman's attributes by (1) order of importance #1/most to #n/n-th and (2) the minimum required value for that attribute on 1/worst-10/best scale i.e. if she rates below that value on that attribute, she's not desirable to you regardless of being an 11 on everything else. I have populated the example below with my ratings for the "long term mate" category. Character aka kindness, honesty, reliability, etc: #1, 10 Personality aka funny, positive, confident, interested, socially adept: #2, 9 Smart aka sharp-minded, quick-witted, well-read, well-informed : #3, 8 Facial features: #4, 8 Congruent interests aka has similar interests as you: #5, 5 Body from the neck down: #6, 3 Feel free to provide your own ratings, I think it might be interesting. I think this system can be used for either sex and any sexual orientation, but I don't know for sure. Maybe women will want to add a "size matters" attribute :-) So if anyone wants to add attributes or subdivide "face" or "body" into constituent parts, have at it. |

| Weight Loss | is spinning good for weight loss?? | Jan 14 2012 01:12 (UTC) |

I have no idea about spinning, but if you do a good bit of bicycling your legs will become firmer, more defined, less jiggly. The muscles may get a little bigger (emphasis on "little") but that will be more than offset by less fat over the muscle.
Try this. While tensing up your calf, feel for how much soft flesh there is there. That is all fat. (If it were muscle, it would be firm when tensed.). Now do the same for your thighs, and rear. If there is only 1/2" or 1/4" of fat, then the slight increase in the underlying muscle size might be noticeable. Otherwise, there's much more fat to lose, than muscle can be gained, and a combination of diet and exercise will make your legs slimmer, not thicker. (Exception: if you become such a strong sprint cyclist that you are tearing other racers up and leaving them for dead, then you might develop significantly larger thighs. That won't happen from spin classes.) |

I'm told men are easier to fit than are women. Most jeans companies have 6-7 cuts for girls, 2-4 for men.
I do wish waists would go higher. Some girls look great in hip huggers, but not many. I think the high waist is more flattering. |

Remove the batteries, put the scale in a bag with a bunch of rice. The rice absorbs moisture and helps dry out the scale. Often simple electronics will work again if they are thoroughly dried.
Turning it "on" when wet decreases the chances, since there's more chance of doing some actual damage. Since the water is inside the scale, this may take a few days. I have about a 60% success rate in salvaging things like cellphones and cameras that have taken a quick bath in fresh water. |

Get into veggies.
An entire large head of cauliflower is 200 cal. Cut it up, drizzle lightly with olive oil, salt, pepper, and roast until browned. Tasty and you probably can't finish it. Similar story for various other veg. Apples are good too. As are some soups, homemade ones. |

Use search. Yoga, including bikram yoga, and the calories burned during, is a topic that gets discussed fairly often and in some depth. At least one forum member brought her heart rate monitor into a session. My thought: it is generally understood that plain old yoga burns very few calories (like gentle walking) and that sitting in a sauna also burns very few calories (like slower walking), so it is not clear to me why combining the two suddenly burns 600-1,000 calories/hour as some people claim. A good friend, not an overeater at all, has practiced bikram yoga for an hour daily, every day, for a couple of years now. It has had no effect on his waistline that I can see.
