This is what usually happens to me if I've stayed the same weight for a while (>3 weeks) while definitely eating under my burn.  I've always thought of it as my body re-calibrating itself Laughing

Weight Loss I hate the scale May 26 2012

Original Post by snoopy123123:

I disagree, i am actually pretty happy with my size. Maybe a little too big, however i am very heavy for my size and that puts so much stress on joints and knees. I am training for a marathon and the knees are the only thing that stop me at around 15 miles now. So weight does matter in the long run for your body.

I think you're missing the point of my post.  I'm upset about how easy it is to fall into a numbers game on the scale, especially when your body is changing its composition, despite the fact that you know you're eating less than you burn and your clothes are fitting looser, and every other sign points to what your end goal is.

It's hard to stay motivated when the scale's been sitting at the same spot for a month, even though your clothes really are looser.  That's not the way it should be, but for some strange reason we're hard wired to care more about the number than all the other things that we're doing well.

That is why I hate the scale.  I still weigh everyday, looking to break that last "low" I had.  I'm not bothered by fluctuation.  But I hate that my motivation comes from seeing that number drop rather than all the other things combined.

A lot of gyms will measure body fat for you. I don't want someone else grabbing my fat though (and you can't accurately use the calipers on some parts of your body doing it on yourself)

I prefer to make sure I'm working out regularly, and weigh consistently (1st thing after my am pee, panties only).  As long as the average weight for a week is lower than the average weight for the previous week, it's a fairly safe assumption that I'm losing fat.  If I'm not working out there's a big chance that there's more muscle loss than I had hoped for.

Your body is retaining the water because you're not eating enough.

The bare minimum for an elderly, sedentary woman is 1200 calories.  You need to eat more than that in order to ingest all the nutrients and vitamins and minerals needed to survive.

Sustained starvation will wreak havoc on your organs and mental state.

Woahhhhh...

From the OP's journal 4 days ago:

Tomorrow is weigh day and I know that it is going to be bad news after today. I hate that feeling, when you have been doing ok-ish all week and you wake up the day before weigh-day and think 'now i musnt mess up today otherwise it'll be disaster on the scales tomorrow as it is already touch and go' and then what happens, you mess up BIG time. No more. For this whole coming week, I am going to stick to my calorie plan, no treats and exercise when I can find the time between revision. By this time next week I want to feel confident that I have reached my target and lost 5lbs throughout the week.

5LBS BY NEXT WEEK ANNA. YOU ARE GOING TO DO IT. NO OPTION!

Anna, you know you can't lose like that.  Or think like that.  I don't know what advice to give you, having nothing more that a crappy self-image most of the time, but I really do hope you can re-think the whole diet mentality and focus on perfection (as a fellow perfectionist, I know how anxiety ridden you can get when things don't work out as planned).

Be gentler on yourself and your body.  It's worth it in the long run!

OP,

Even if you are done growing taller, your organs and brain are still doing a massive amount of growing.  You're going to gain weight from that.  It's not fat.  Promise.  Your body's going to spend the next 5 years constantly changing shape.  You're going to hate clothes shopping.  It's a fact of life and all of us women have to deal with it.

Your hips are going to widen in some god-damned attempt to make us all ready to have children (grumbles about not wanting children and wanting less-wide hips).

You may think you have a nice rack now, but it keeps growing till you're 21 or 22.

And did I mention that your organs are continuing to grow?

I'm as thin at 145 as a 26 year old as I was at 130 as a 17 year old.  I still fit in the prom dresses to prove it!

Your profile picture shows a beautiful slender girl.  Please continue to eat healthy.  But also remember to tell yourself that you're beautiful every morning and work on building a self image that can survive falling down a mountain and gaining 30 lbs (been there, done that, still liked myself after but missed my old clothing).

The most beautiful thing someone else will see is someone who has a lot of self confidence.  If you can't believe in yourself, who else can.  And until you really do believe it, just keep faking it.  One day it'll become a reality.  And nobody else will know that you were faking the whole time (again, from experience)

Weight Loss Pop culture and food ideas ... opinions? May 22 2012

I'm of the opinion that too many rules make most diets fail.  My only rule is to eat less than I burn over a given week.  Trying to make those foods nutrient dense is more of a guideline than a rule :P  There are just days that you need a half-pint of ice cream.  It seems to work well for me.  People comment on how quickly I lose weight when I get back on my wagon, and I'm never unhappy while doing it :)  It's a shame that I suck really badly at intuitive eating

Motivation Absolutely ZERO motivation to exercise May 09 2012

I also hate exercise.  I hate getting to the gym, I hate being in the middle of it.  But everytime when I'm done I have this great feeling of accomplishment.  And it makes all the rest worthwhile.  I always have to remind myself of that.

My biggest motivator:

pre-log the calories you plan to burn at the gym.  Having to remove the entry because I'm being lazy is really depressing!  When I'm running I'm constantly saying "No, you can't quit now, you'd have to edit your activity log like a loser! Just a few more minutes!"

I refuse to count on the weekends, but count religiously on weekdays.  Some weekends I undo all my hard work of the previous week, which motivates me to do better the following weekend.

It also motivates me to not undereat too much on weekdays, even though I can comfortably do it with my work routine.  The weeks I undereat I have a hard time controlling myself on weekends.

Once I hit my goal weight, I'll hopefully work in more non-counting days.  But I've come crawling back to this site so many times already... :-\

Something cool I've been meaning to try:

Peel an overripe banana and place in a baggy in the freezer.  After solid, throw it in the blender till creamy.  Optionally mix in a small amount of honey or cocoa powder.

Def peel the banana first though...I made that mistake the last time I tried this!

When you live a more active lifestyle, you have more muscle to maintain, which burns more calories.  You can definitely record yourself at a higher activity level and continue to log your exercise :)

Try eating at maintenance on the weekends (or two days a week). It might keep your body guessing just enough to kick start the losses. If you're worried about rate of loss go ahead and drop down to 1200 the other days, but make sure those 1200 are super nutrient dense.

Don't be surprised if lifting weights has you retaining some water as you first get started. You can still be working off fat while retaining water. And don't worry about growing new muscles and getting bulky liftin weights. You can't do that on a deficit. You can start out with either machines or free weights. Whatever you feel most comfortable with. Make a log of the exercises you do, how many reps, an how much weight your using. You want to be able to not complete the motion by the end of the second or third set.

moonbow, I'm disagreeing on her trashing of someone's intelligence based off of their job.

In this particular case, the cop is actually a detective.  He also is very interested in working at a federal level one day, and has done his homework on this topic after something happened locally a few years ago.  I've only been in the state for almost 3 years, so the event doesn't stand out in my memory.

I think it might have had to do with a government employee doing something illegal and being caught on a recording, but the recording was inadmissible and the person doing the recording ended up charged.  But I'll admit my memory's a bit spotty for stuff like this when I have no idea the people he's talking about when discussing caselaw :-\

When your body releases the signal to stimulate uterine cramps, the intestines unfortunately get the same message.  It's a pretty common thing.  I take Imodium on the first and last day of my period and don't have too many problems.  Thank goodness for BC keeping me regular so I know when to take the meds!

CSAs are great if you're not a picky eater.  I really wish I could join.  I'm jealous of the loads of fresh fruits and veggies my friends bring home from the local CSA (but only when it's ones I like)

Actually this cop is quite smart.  He went to Carnegie Mellon.  Bet you couldn't get in there ;) I'd really appreciate it if you wouldn't insult my close friends.  I trust the man who knows the State traffic codes backwards and forwards.

Nimbus, The only answer you will get here is to eat more.  Your diet is a starvation diet.  CC doesn't support starvation diets.

Just asked a Baltimore city cop...It's a federal crime to audio or video record someone without their knowledge and consent, unless it's a public official acting out their official duties, such as a policeman, fireman, councilman, etc.
