| Foods | Collard Greens? | Jul 20 2011 14:47 (UTC) |

Thanks everyone, so many suggestions! I didn't know people were still responding until just now! First off, I would have gladly had Swiss chard or kale instead, but with the CSA, you don't have a choice. All members of the CSA get the same thing - whatever's fresh that week. Speaking of fresh, I wonder if that's the secret. Like I said, the first week (when I didn't know what I was doing), I sauteed them for about 10 minutes and they were fine. Not spectacular, just boring, like spinach. They didn't soak up the flavors like the kale I also sauteed. But they were not bitter or tough though. Then the next week, following the advice on here, I boiled them for 15 minutes (I was planning on boiling them longer), but they were already too mushy for my taste. AND, I didn't remove the center rib. There was no trace of toughness or bitterness at all. It was pretty much exactly like overcooked spinach. So, my advice is - get really fresh collard greens! Or maybe the stuff we have in the north is different than the stuff in the south? |

isn't the idea to try to avoid repeats (or at least recent repeats?) slum |

You don't need a lot of protein. I don't know where you are, but most Americans eat way more protein than they need. After I logged my Chobani Greek yogurt for breakfast, this website said my protein intake for the day was "good." It was only half the RDA, but that's not bad for one meal. Other super-easy protein? Shrimp - buy it cooked and peeled already if you're not into cooking. You can add that to your pasta. Rotisserie chicken - most supermarkets sell already cooked chicken. It's usually pretty good. You can eat it as it is or cut it up to put into your pasta or make chicken salad, or whatever. If you're the only one eating it, it could probably last you a week. Really Easy, but not as easy as not cooking: Salsa chicken - spray a baking dish with Pam. Put some chicken breasts in it. cover with salsa. If you can afford the calories, add a little cheddar. Bake until the chicken is cooked (use a thermometer if you can't tell.) The chicken is moist, tender, and delicious. Easiest pork tenderloin - you need a microwaveable casserole dish with a lid for this. Apply about a teaspoon of olive oil to the tenderloin. Coat it with your favorite spice rub. Put it in the casserole dish, tucking smaller end under so it's a uniform thickness. Microwave it on high for about 8 minutes with cover on. check the temperature. If it's 150, take it out and let it sit (COVERED) until it's 160 degrees (about 10 minutes). If it's not 150 degrees, put it in for another 2 minutes until it is and check for temperature again. I know it sounds gross to nuke pork, but it's easy, fast, and as an added bonus doesn't heat up your kitchen in the summer like an over or stove does. And the pork is moist and delicious too. |

| Weight Loss | I feel like giving up ! | Jul 12 2011 14:08 (UTC) |

This X 3!!! I'm 5'6" and my target weight is 135! You probably aren't losing weight because you're already at your body's target weight. Also, who cares what the scale says anyway if your pants are looser? Muscle weighs more than fat. So, if you're working out more and your weight stays the same, it's probably because you've lost fat and gained muscle, which is exactly what you want. Also, if I'm trying to lose weight, I always hit a plateau before my period. When I have my period, I lose weight again. If I'm not trying to lose weight, it actually goes up a little before my period (and then goes down after).
Bottom line: just keep a healthy fitness and food regimen and don't worry about losing pounds. |

Funny, I was just thinking that I wished CC wouldn't give my day's foods a worse grade because I went over their recommended sodium levels. And then I saw a link to this post as a "popular" item. (Not sure how they calculated this as popular with only three posts and none of them today, but that's beside the point.) I have low blood pressure and eat salt whenever I want it. Although, I'm not one of those people who crave salty snacks like potato chips. If I never ate another potato chip, I wouldn't really miss it. However, I keep garlic salt in my office and season most of my lunches with it. I wouldn't say I eat a lot of salt, but I eat more than CC says I should. Which is having no effect on my blood pressure. I wonder if eating processed foods has a greater effect on blood pressure than salt alone? Interesting article and I look forward to learning more about this.

To me, that's better than being sprayed with pesticides. Plus, I have yet to meet an organic farmer who shovels poop on her plants. Composted poop mixed with other decomposed organic stuff, sure, but not just plain poop. I think that's actually bad for plants. It needs to be broken down a little first. Sorry, off-topic again. To the OP though, I agree, fruit and veggie sizes (and just about every portion size, for that matter) are generally bigger than they should be. I now look for the smaller bananas when I buy them because if I'm not conscious of it, I gravitate to the enormous ones (no Freudian analysis, please! |

Thanks, everyone! I think I'll try an adaptation of the bacon recipe. When I was in the supermarket last night, I saw they had hunks of pancetta (a fatty Italian ham). It hought that would be a good substitute for the bacon. I'll chop it up and cook it instead of the bacon, but keep the rest of theholla's recipe. ootek- soup's a good idea, but I can't get myself in the mood for soup when it's so hot and steamy outside. I'll have to remember that for the fall when soups are so comforting. thhq - I would prefer another green, but with a CSA, if I can quote preschool teachers across the nation, "you get what you get, and you don't get upset." (If you don't know what a CSA is, you pay a farm for a "share" at the beginning of the season and then every week you get a big box of whatever produce is in season that week. This week, I got collard greens, red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce, green beans, 3 zucchini, 3 summer squash, 3 pickling cucumbers, 3 normal cucumbers [that will be my next post - what on earth am I to do with all these cucumbers?!?], strawberries, and cabbage.) |

I guess I can try that. I do like bacon, it just makes a mess. I sauteed them with some Italian chicken sausage, garlic, and onion last week. It was ok, but I wasn't crazy about it. Maybe I didn't cook it long enough. I am a New England girl so I definitely did not grow up with this stuff!! |

My form is fine. Like I said, I can make the font big enough that I don't need to bend over at all. (It does have a little shelf thing for magazines built in at about chest height.) "Flipping" the pages is no more of a hassle than adjusting the speed or elevation. I guess I'll try a towel next time. Or maybe bubble wrap. I just don't want to permanently damage it. Or maybe I'll have to just use it on a bike or elliptical instead. (but I really want it for jogging!)

Thanks everyone for your responses. Especially dbackerfan. I like that alternative way to gauge the intensity of my workout. Now I guess I need to start talking to myself when I run to see how easy it is. |
