Motivation Stepping off the Scale Apr 22 2013

Thanks for all the comments.  They've been really helpful.  In general I've been using the scale to keep in check when I get out of control but also using it as a way to reaffirm that I haven't gotten too out of control on bad weeks.  So I'm doing this mostly so I stop justifying unhealthy behavior by saying "see it wasn't too bad."

fitquest - You're totally right!  And I cut a minute off my mile time last week, for a twenty mile run, so I'm going with I should be celebrating that one.

anythingcanhappen - that's a good point about the day after a race.  It's likely it would be a lower number than a higher one, but even so I'll keep that in mind.

last8 - One of the goals of this is to try to get me not to be more comfortable with weighing myself less.  I don't think I have the same things going on as you, but I will definitely try to keep in a healthy head space.

Week 1: 177.4

Week 3: 179

Yup.  It was actually higher and I've had a couple of good days in a row.  I'm hoping today was a good day too so by tomorrow my weight will be better.  I ate like two whole bags of chips the weekend after thanksgiving, and that was on top of the thanksgiving stuff.  Anyway, I hope everyone is doing well.

Melissa - that's some good steady progress!  Yay!

Happy thanksgiving!

I'm kind of missing the parade and cream of wheat that my mother always makes, but I am excited to have a party with my friends tonight.  I made sweet potatoes and bread and everyone else is bringing things.  I'm super happy.

On the other hand I got in my run today so I'm feeling like the day can't go too far downhill from here.  Plus I might go to the gym with my friend tomorrow (friday is usually my rest day, but I have to take saturday off for a variety of reasons).  So, I'm going to have fun but hopefully break even.  Next week I'm hoping to be down, but I know that this week is a little hard.

battsherlashes - I do exercise.  Mostly I run, but recently I've added weight lifting in to the mix.  Not a lot, just fifteen or twenty minutes twice a week.  I'm hoping it helps.

Hello!  I'd love to join.  I'm moving home for the first time in more than two years at the end of december and I'm worried that the stress is going to have me practicing some bad habits.  Plus I do like to eat more during the winter.

Week 1: 177.4

Goal: 173

I'm hoping to get to a BMI of 28 as this stretch's mini goal.

I really like the food suggestions so I'll post one of my own.  And ounce of pistachios is 160 calories and lots of protein.  I measure out an ounce, put it in a ziplock and then I have it whenever I'm feeling hungry.

Weight Loss Plateau and loss of motivation. Please help :) Nov 05 2012

Hey!  Congratulations, you're in the healthy range!  I do want to point out that you should definitely be eating more than 1000 calories on any given day.  CC recommends that women not go below 1200 because it can put your body into starvation mode. That might help you break your plateau as well.

I wanted to point out that you're not going to be able to live forever without chocolate and cookies so you might want to find a way to incorporate them into your diet.  Maybe put aside 150 calories for sweets?  It might make it easier to stick with things in the long term.

I have definitely plateaued and struggled with around five pounds after nearly 30 lbs of weight loss as well.  I would say that you just need to keep plugging and remember that maintaining is a pretty good victory.

Weight Loss running for weight loss Nov 05 2012

I definitely attribute running, in addition to a relatively healthy diet, to a lot of weight loss (about 30 lbs).  I largely plateaued for a year (losing five pounds). Some of that was frustrating because I was eating well and not losing weight, and some of that was because I wasn't eating well at all.  Either way I was running and I trained for and ran two marathons during that time.  At the points in time when I was doing the worst I definitely think the daily exercise helped me maintain my weight loss and not gain everything back.

I finished my second marathon three weeks ago and I am now starting to add in weight lifting two days a week.  I am just beginning to see a little weight loss again.  I still run at least three miles five days a week and I'm planning to add about two miles a day to that in a few weeks.  I'm definitely a little addicted, and even if it's not what's causing me to lose weight, I feel great after a run and that's what matters.

I'm training for my second marathon and today I ran 6 miles in 62 minutes!  It's a personal best.

I'm definitely not going to make my weight this challenge, but I wasn't sure I was going to when I signed up.  I am still coming off my bloat and I'm thinking that I've probably maintained.  Plus I ran 35 minutes of stairs today!  I can't wait for Ramadan to be over so I can go back to running at my gym.  Stairs suck.

I'm going for another week away from home so I'm weighing in early.  I'm so happy about the number this morning!  I was honestly just hoping to hold steady at 176 for another week.  After struggling for months over every tenth of a pound, this is just a really good feeling.  Plus my long run is Saturday, so I don't think I'm dehydrated or anything!  Good luck everyone.

I've gone from 184 to 175 or so this year and I don't see it.  Sure things are looser but I don't see it.  And at 5'5 I'm still wearing size 16 bottoms.  I was really, really hoping to be further along by now and I'm disappointed in how slowly I lose and how far I have to go.  It just doesn't feel possible.  I dragged myself to the gym during lunch to try and get out of this funk but I'm still feeling really down.  I hope some of this is just water weight.

The fact it takes me a month to lose 2-3 lbs is making me feel like a complete loser.

Sometimes it just takes longer to see the change.  I've lost a little more than six pounds since september but I've gone down nearly two pants sizes.  Your body just needs time to get over the weight loss.  And 2 lbs a month is 24 lbs a year.  Next year you'll be really happy you stuck with it!

YAY!  I've seen this number a couple of times (the first time being in March) but I'm feeling really good about it.  I've been able to do a few things to change up my running now that my gym is closed for Ramadan.  I was running outside all last week and this week I'm doing stairs and a pattern in my house (no worries, I'm not fasting, I just live in a Muslim country).  As annoying as running in my house is, it that was when I saw my best numbers last year, so I'm hoping for a repeat.

shahana88 - There is no need to feel ashamed, even when you're doing things like eating out a lot you feel like you are eating less than you used to.  You'll get there, you might just need a little time to get back on track.

I'm spending next week away from home but I'm going to be with my slightly crazy friend who already has our running schedule mapped out and I think I'm going to be running twice a day some days?  Wish me luck.

Sehmicor - Breakups can be hard, even if they're exactly what you need, so just take it slow and you'll get there.  The Pollen approach isn't actually what it was called, I just couldn't remember the names of his books at the moment.  He wrote In Defense of Food and The Omnivore's Dilemma.  Mostly I like him because he's funny.  He says things like, don't eat anything your grandmother wouldn't recognize or that you can't pronounce.  Congratulations on your arms and the gym!

I'm doing a self defense program today and I'm scared it's going to go terribly.  Hopefully it will be a giggle fit, rather than girls trying to leave because they're embarrassed.

Definitely had a little bit of a party for the fourth, and even though I kept up with my exercise (actually did really well this week on that count) it definitely shows. Just going to refocus because this is a new week.

kellyreuss - I'm using the runner's world phone app for a schedule, but they only want me to run four days a week, and I get grumpy with that many off days, so I might cheat a little.  It does seem to be helping with my speed though.  I'm a very slow runner, so I could use all the help I can get.  What do you like about Hal Higdon?

Anyway, do you actually enjoy running marathons? Do you do it for the challenge or does the actual distance feel good while running? I ask because a friend a mine is training for one in the Spring and is a little nervous about the pain that may be associated with it.

I think that last time I enjoyed the accomplishment of doing it more than the run itself.  I'm hoping that changes, but I also really enjoy the training.  Since that's four months and the race is one day, I think that it definitely justifies the race being a little painful.  I know some people would say that I should just run then and not do a marathon, but I'm kind of goal oriented.  Tell your friend that he doesn't have to finish, but that he should prepare like he's going to.

Happy 4th!

I even got a swim in yesterday. It was a lot of fun although a little surreal to see the embassy and all the people there, like a weird mix of my childhood and Jordan.

Marion - the important thing is that you caught yourself and are getting back on track. You're a powerhouse when you're in gear.

Gb - 90-95% is still a whole lot of pig. I am looking at giving up the sugary tea that people drink here and I'm a little in agony over it. And it's great that you're getting back to exercise.

Kellyreuss, science_chick, runoff55 - I'm training for my second marathon in October.  I took up running last year because it burns so many calories and might have a minor addiction now.

Clampers - It's a good goal!

Gb - today it might not even hit ninety! We definitely had a couple of weeks solidly over 100 but nothing nearly as bad as 115. Normally it's in the nineties (30s C) and only terrible if I'm trying to get anything done. My cat just pants on the tiles. Lately he's taken to using the water from his bowl to cool himself off! I'm trying the Pollen approach, that if I want something that isn't healthy (or is questionable) I have to make it myself. It's so great that you are going whole hog on clean eating. I'm such a fan.

Sehmicor - I don't think I would have maintained if I had stopped exercising, my metabolism hates me that way. But it was really nice to see that I could take a couple of weeks without counting and still pull through.

Amanda -That's fabulous!

So I am going to go home in August for the first time in 20 months for a friend's wedding. And I know that this might not be a great way to go about things but I'm setting myself a seven pound goal by then. I'd really like to be 170. But I know that I look and feel great regardless of whether I meet a weight goal.

I hadn't really thought about goal measurements but it would be nice to get down to a 31" waistline in two months.
