Thank you for all of your support, schlabayzell :) I appreciate all that you have said and it really does help hearing that others are going through the same thing (although, I wish that others did not have to) - but it makes me feel less alone all the same. I've been getting up around 2000 lately, so I'm getting there! I actually was at 2500+ for a while, but then I think I started getting scared and restricting again.. so I'm working my way back up, and hoping that it gets easier!

I don't believe 2000 calories is truly necessary, but it depends on activity level, height, weight, sex, etc etc.

For us girls, I find 1400 - 1800 to be fairly normal, but even I have a hard time eating that many since I live off from fruits and vegetables normally anyways. However, in your case, seeing as you're attempting to gain weight, I think eating about 2000 calories would do you wonders, if even for just a little while. You don't have to necessarily fill up on a lot of food to consume that many calories though. You can eat a lot of peanut butter (2 tbs has 200 calories alone) and that would easily get you a ton of calories, fast. You can add things like nuts to yogurt, or salads which would add some extra calories without adding much extra food. Salad dressings, or any dressing of sort (like mayonnaise, barbeque, etc etc) would add extra calories, too. There are many options that wouldn't make you have to eat a ton and a ton of food.

Muscle mass does deteriorate in cases like yours, where you starve yourself. Your body doesn't have anything else to get energy from, so it uses your muscles as fuel. Eat lots of protein, and do some strength training to build muscle back up.

I think you need to be eating at least 2000 calories and ideally somewhere around the 4000 mark. I put on weight that way..eating 4000 cals a day plus building up my body by exercise once I got strong enough to do that..once I got those extra 6lbs on it got harder but with determination you can do it.

Just exercise very lightly in order to keep fit and healthy maybe lift 5lb at first, there is really no need to rush to build muscle straight away if you're anything like me you'll be pretty weak anyway so just build up very very slowly until your strong enough to lift heavier weights of 8lb or 10 lb. A warning though it took me around 8-10 months to put on any real meaningful weight although i find it hard to put on muscle you may find it slighly easier but its very tough...a lot of effort and tiny results but once the ball starts rolling it gets a little easier.

Weight Gain So fedup of being naturally thin( Nov 01 2011

I've changed my Doctor, it was not easy because she was the only female doctor in the practice but I had to do it because she was very casual about my low weight, also she is East European from Ukraine so I couldnt understand her accent that well but she seemed to think I should lift heavy weights and body build which is ridiculous advice for someone like me. 1) I cant lift or push what most people would call heavy  2) I lost more weight than gained. My new doctor is monitoring my weight more but hasnt given me as much as a diet sheet so next time I'll ask him to be a bit more proactive about things.

Yes I realise that now, it was my Doctor who told me to go to the gym because I would fill out naturally as I got older like twiggy and that some women developed later in life but anyhow I have taken her advice and its not really worked. It just seems that people are brainwashed into thinking eating lots and getting fat is unhealthy and its so much in the media that maybe people who are underweight naturally are scared of suddenly eating in case they suffer heart attacks etc. In reality it would be much more dangerous to stay thin and just hope that I fill out later because its possible that some of us would stay thin all our lives..my mummy is 7st and her sister has been just over 6st all her life although she's 4ft 11 tall but I can't just blame genetics, its better that I try and actually change things before its too late.

I managed to eat an whole pizza for supper with chips on top of my regular 3 meals, I cant say I slept well but I'm eating twice as much as my sister and she is 2 stone heavier than me despite being four years younger she has always bossed me around and teased me about my slight figure. Actually I dont think I should be criticised for wanting a more athletic body, I was easily bullied for being a swot and a bookworm and got called names like twiggy, boney, matchstick girl etc as my arms and legs were very thin and wore trousers all the time so now I go to judo classes and wear contacts instead of thick glasses, it would be nice if I could look sporty as well,  I worry about having no muscle on me as much as lack of fat I suppose( but YES I can see my first priority is to put on weight even if it makes me feel sick I have to stuff it down my throat and to hell with enjoying it. At least I enjoy cakes and chocolate but at this rate I will probably end up hating them))

Have you tried drinks?

I've been having Complan drinks and Protein shakes  and I'm stopping going to the gym until I get stronger so I can maybe add more bulk if I can although I am very small boned in general so I dont want too much wobbly fat..want to try for a more athletic look despite not being in anyway athletic((

Also my BMI is 15.4 which is still underweight but always when I use online BMI it is lower:-/

If you are 5' 6" and 89lbs, then here is how to work out your BMI:

66 inches X 2.54 = 1.6764m

1.6764m squared = 2.8103.

89lbs x 2.20461 = kgs = 40.36kgs.

40.36/2.81= BMI 14.36

The online calculator is correct

My Doctor told me that online bmi calculators are unreliable and that my bmi would be higher so really I dont know what to believe..it doesnt matter because both are underweight.

Weight Gain Exercise? Oct 28 2011

Maybe just exercise once or twice a week, I think anything that is "obsessive" is addictive and maybe bad in the long run. Maybe try to do exercises that add bulk rather than lose it?

Obviously I'm not that unusual because there are naturally thin types who are just built that way genetically. I eat less than most people but considering my size I probably eat much more, the advice given was to go to the gym to build up and gain weight because my muscle mass ratio was 22% and the average is 36% for a woman so that worried me even more than my BMI actually. I've just resigned myself to it really because other have had the same physique like twiggy, Kate moss, Audrey Hepburn etc..maybe I would be more relaxed about it if it was the 1960's but right now I stick out like a sore thumb.

No.

Nobody is naturally that thin, and if you 'eat less than most people' we finally have an answer.

Now call me a geek, but I know these things: Kate Moss was 5' 7" and 7 stone 8 at her peak, and Audrey hepburn (who, by the way, had anorexia -see her autobiography) was 5' 7" and usually 7 stone 12 except when her disorder was bad. Twiggy, I admit, was 5' 6" and 92 lbs, AND PAID TO STAY LIKE THAT... You see her now, and she looks perfectly well and a normal size... NOBODY needs to be BMI 14 unless they have a serious medical condition (crohn's, etc)

You are 6 stone 5. You 'eat less than  other people' and work out way more... You see the difference?

My Doctor says I will put on weight naturally as I get older...I hope so! I just dont want to wait until I am nearly 30 yrs old to look normal.

How did you manage to put on weight? I already eat quite unhealthily, most of my meals are fatty already. I eat toast for breakfast and sandwiches for dinner but often have a meal for dinner at a local tapas bar then a proper meal for tea, pizza or takeaways on fridays/Saturdays etc. Also my BMI is 15.4 which is still underweight but always when I use online BMI it is lower:-/

I have been tested for fat, water, muscle, protein and given daily lists to account for food I am eating etc. mainly because I actually paid for a Private specialist to assess me. Of course I know I am underweight, when I got to 14 I had a growth spurt and became very skinny. From 4 11 I shot up 5 inches and had the usual growth pains and got poor posture, weak arms and legs and was knock-kneed so it is not something I'm at all pleased about!!

I eat normal..just pizza, burger, fish n chips the same as everyone else really but most of my family are skinny so what can you do, I try to do more physical things to make up for being unathletic and a bit of a geek at school. Now I'm older I want to look more like a grown woman with a more sporty physique..I'll never be a Baywatch babe but I hate the frail English Rose look I have. Its really hacking me off!!!

Explain it to them, in as non-confrontational way as you can. Ask them if they would go up to an overweight person and do the same, and explain to them that you find it just as uncomfortable and embarrassing.

It's really, really annoying when people do that kind of thing, I know, but they don't mean to upset us - they just genuinely don't get it. I have a friend's mother who comments on my weight every time she sees me, in front of anyone and everyone, and it makes me a bit reluctant to go to that friend's house. The worst is my grandmother, though. Her memory is all over the place, so she comments on my weight pretty much every time she lays eyes on me, even if she said the same thing ten minutes before.

And loopydingdong is right. If you're sick of being unusually thin, there's a solution!

I don't think I'm assertive enough to actually confront them, I have occasionally given them a look but I usually give a nervous  laugh, I want to be able to talk right back to them but I don't think I have it in me to really stick up for myself..being my size has always led me to be easily bullied and maybe thats sapped my confidence..I dunno((.

That's very rude, i think. In those situations I would just say to the person, excuse me but would you mind not touching me like that, i find it quite uncomfortable?

However, i suppose, one way to stop it is to gain some weight..are you actively trying to gain at the moment?

I am all the time but with great difficulty, I actually weigh a few lbs more than I did last year, my nutritionist advised me to try eating protein and building up some much needed muscle on my so-called physique lol...(think Twiggy). I got a tiny bit of bulk on my legs so I gained there but my upper body looks the same. I would just LOVE to some day wake up and have nice strong arms rather than the two  matchstick arms I have, my nutritionist - an otherwise nice polite Polish woman - siad to me recently that my biceps looked like a knot in  a piece of string..another comment that I laughed along with only to later burst out into tears. I'm very sympathetic to anorexics as two of my friends suffer extreme weight loss but both at least have a reasonable amount of muscle mass despite weighing less than me.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
