We're a small-ish company in the grand scheme of things, somewhere around 800 employees across 14 locations. Definitely odd. But they're doing well, so I guess it must be working for them??

...

seriously?

you have to bring your own pens and paper now?

My company doesn't provide pens. They provide any other thing you could possibly need to do your job, but you gotta bring your own pens. They don't even provide pens for customers to use.

Oh, and calculators. If you don't work in the accounting department, you have to provide your own calculator. Undecided

"Cronuts" sounds like a mix of "cro-magnon" and "nuts."  To me that makes them sound not as appealing.  :P

*throws confetti, slides shots down bar* Not sure what you fancy so there's some root beer, sparkling cider, whiskey and vodka.

Woohooo!  Root beer works well for me. :)

Be careful leaving the booze out like that. It attracts things like Frothbeasts, and other desirables. ;)

Just came back in and I, too, misunderstood. When you said "employee handbook," I thought you meant the "Big Book Of Policies and Procedures For The Company." But now I get it. This definitely changes the scope of what's going on.

You mentioned in another reply that you need to learn about the Unemployment process. This is something I had some exposure to at another job.

The number one thing you can do, at this point, is to start documenting everything in writing. If you have to start giving her written warnings, make sure that they include the nature of the infraction, expected steps to be taken toward improvement, and consequences if behavior does not change or improve, and make sure you include the phrase "up to and including termination of employment."

When I was involved in these things, 9 times out of 10, if we (the company) could show multiple written warnings documenting infractions and showing a pattern of poor behavior with no improvement, we would win and the person would be denied benefits. Occasionally it's not that cut and dry, but often it is.

Anyway...good luck and hang in there. As others have said, at least you're putting a lot of thought into your course of action here, and not just making a knee-jerk reaction.

My question is this: Are you confident that the assistant has the skills necessary to accomplish something like writing a handbook?

The reason I ask is that her remark about this project being about "writing directions for a new person" leads me to believe that she doesn't understand what an employee handbook is, or what its purpose is for a company.

Obviously you believe she's capable if you assigned her the task, but it could be that this is something that she doesn't understand and/or does not have the background or skills necessary to accomplish it without more help. Or it could be that she's not used to doing research or working to a deadline.

Her defensive behavior could stem from the fact that this is something that's overwhelming for her, so she believes that this is a "sink or swim" project designed to make her fail.

Now ... if you tell me that she has a college degree in Human Resources, or has 10 years of experience doing HR-related things, then by all means, it's time to question if she's the right person for the job.

If not, here's what I'd consider doing:

Start fresh on the handbook project.

Prepare a written timetable of the different phases of the project that gives clear expectations of deadlines and the content and quality of the material she'll be producing. Also look into some books or websites that might offer more in-depth instruction on writing handbooks, above and beyond the samples you have already given her.

Then, sit down with her and tell her you're wiping the slate clean. Explain what you envision this handbook to be, and if you think it will help, explain to her what handbooks do in general for companies, i.e. serve as a reference for all employees, give clear instructions with regard to company policy, etc. (In other words, give her the who, what, when, where, and why of the project.)

Explain how this project that she's a part of will be beneficial to the entire company, and will be a great skill for her to develop. Invite her to add her own (positive) input if she thinks of anything else that will be beneficial to the project. Encourage her to take ownership of it, or at least let her be an equal partner in the process.

Then, show her the timetable along with the books/websites that will give her extra help. Let her know that if she gets into a jam or if there comes a time when she needs to adjust the timetable, to come and talk to you. Let her know that you're there to help and that you're flexible...within reason.

I figure one of the following will happen:

1. She will no longer feel threatened by the project and will at least make an honest effort. Even better, she might actually take it and run with it and do a great job.

2. If she continues to flounder and doesn't make an effort, then you have a good foundation to begin disciplinary proceedings to get rid of her. If she misses a deadline without talking to you or without a good reason, then you have that timetable in writing that can be used as a basis for a written warning.

Of course, I'm saying this with only the info you've given in your post. I'm assuming that she's otherwise been a decent employee but seems to be having a hard time with this particular task.

Good luck!

Laura, I see that your link was a Tumbler link. Yahoo just acquired Tumblr and revive Flickr and give user up to 1 Terabytes of storage. That was enough for me to revive my Flickr account.

Yeah I was surprised that the Flickr changes happened so quickly! Logged in to my Flickr account yesterday for the first time in a few days and thought I'd gone somewhere else. Not sure yet if I like the new layout, though.
