Wow weddingmama - that'll be an amazing achievement - good luck! Welcome athompson60, don't worry about getting down to your goal weight by July, the only reason this group started is to realise small goals at a time. In fact I changed my goals on my profile page today to reflect a higher goal weight overall (140 instead off BMI recommended 119) then when I eventually get to that I can change my goal again. It's better to go slowly and surely than rush into these things :)

I'm now down to 158 as of this morning (not sure whether the stress of essays is helping lol! But I am eating well) so that's 10lb since I started on this group I believe :) only 4 more to go and I'm at my mini goal - and it's only April! I didn't think it would go this well - thank you all so much!

I think one of the main reason for how quickly it's suddenly started coming off the past few weeks (after quite a long time of maintaining)  is my boyfriend hasnt been cooking for me lol - he's an amazing cook but he makes quite high cal meals - healthy but high cal :( While I've been home on my own writing my essays I've been having regular small meals and a nice biggish low cal meal in the evening (my fave has been grilled chicken breast stuffed with low fat cheese, chives and garlic mmmm)

Anyway - hope everything is going well for everyone else. Queenmedia - I love that feeling in the morning when you feel just that little bit smaller, makes you feel like yesterday was a real achievement :)

Good luck everyone x

Funnily enough I had my tonsils out when I was 10 (I had recurring tonsilitis severely from when I was about 5 year old) but sadly, 11 years later they have apparantly grown back! Lol - I didn't know they could do that, but my doctor said apparantly they can, though they are obviously a lot smaller so it's less likely it'll ever get as severe as when I was a kid. Wierd huh?

Congratulations Queenmedia - that's a big loss! Well done too theashter. I know - it's seeming that little bit more possible every time I get on the scales :) It's starting to look a little more noticeable too, my stomach is definitely smaller, but that's probably due to water loss as well as not being bloated with ridiculous ammounts of food - still got a long way to go before it's flat though lol.

How about you guys - you noticing the physical differences? I know this sounds strange but my arms seems thinner and slightly firmer (I was well on the way to flab wings before this started lol!) they've only gone down by 1/2 ince but they just feel better - wierd I know!

Thank you so much Erin, that is all really helpful. Gives me a very good perspective of the place, thanks!

I probably will be having a car when I'm there (going to sell my car over here and by a cheap one there probably) just as you said because of things like grocery shopping and general getting around - plus it is quite likely my brother is going to go to Harvard which I know is quite a while away but it would be fun to road trip to see him once and a while.

Glad that the JK school has a good reputation - it's kinda hard to tell when you don't live in the country. I've seen a thing or two on youtube about it but other than that I am just judging on what the website has told me and that's always going to be biassed.

What sort of music do you like? Would you ever still consider coming to the UK? It's nice to hear that Dover has a multicultural population - I come from a dock town full of all different kinds of backgrounds (my family's originally from Greece), so it'd be nice to still be surrounded by different backgrounds - after all I guess I'll be an immigrant too lol.

Thanks again for all of the really useful info x

Thanks very much guys... luckily the cough is starting to die down now :) I looked at some cough medecines but so many of them don't have the cals listed - which is annoying. Covonia is great and has a lot of natural ingredients like liquorice and peppermint - but it's so sweet and syruppy there has to be some cals in there.

Still, a couple of extra cals cant hurt too much if it's to make your throat better in the long run huh.

By the way I finally got my butt in gear and added some pics on my gallery - namely 2 pics showing how much weight I have put on since being in uni. I needed to do it just so I can see what I have to get rid of and also how different I used to look only 3 years ago. The second pic of me at my heaviest is a pretty good before pic lol - my friend snapped it as I was sitting down to a meal in a restaurant funnily enough - my tummy looks huge lol! Still - hopefully when I eventually have a good after pic this will be a great one for comparison - definitely inspires me to lose those lbs!

I completely relate to that! Thing is - a small ammount of pounds can actually equal quite a large ammount of inches sometimes, because you are losing water and gas from your stomach.

It's quite possible we fit into clothes the exact same way and the way we appear to ourselves is actually psychosomatic and we look exactly the same as 2 lbs ago in reality. But I'd rather feel good about myself and believe that I am fitting that little bit better - even if it is only in my head lol! Personally I think a couple of lbs, even a small ammount can make you fit into clothes all the better - after all you don't know where your body is losing it from.

Well done theahster! that's fantastic - you are doing so well!

idajooon79 - try not to worry too much, you will get that weight off in no time, as weddingmama said it could quite easilly be water weight - besides it is better that you have a rest and get your knee and ankle feeling better than pushing yourself too hard and doing more damage.

I gained 3 lbs over the two weeks after easter because I had the same trouble of I wasn't excercising enough (I was staying at my boyfriends and he lives in the middle of nowhere - nowhere near a gym to be precise - and his family are big eaters). Also I've had my dissertation to do which requires being sedentary most of the time.

I felt horrible as if I had gone right back to square 1 and there was no point in trying! (I started at 170 and with the 3lbs I put back on I was right back to 168 again! - it has been going quite slowly lol) but I got right back on the horse (as weddingmama said) and lost 5 lbs in the last week and a half - so a lot of it must have been water weight otherwise it wouldn't have come off so quickly.

So don't lose heart - just keep going and try not to worry about last weeks weight, just keep focused on next weeks x

Sorry queenmedia - It took me ages to get used to the whole writing my pounds down, I'm so used to saying stone. A stone is 14 lbs x

So sorry I haven't posted for a while, I've been really ill the past two weeks with tonsilitis progressing into a chest infection :( so I haven't been going to the gym. I've been really run down all the time and just focussing on feeling better (I'm doing my dissertation and two other huge essays - 18,000 words in total - so I need to get better soon). Been having lots of vitamin C through things like oranges and juice but other than that have been eating quite badly... I know I'm a comfort eater but I am getting back on track now.

Ordered a pedometer (quite cheap) off the net the other day so I can moniter my 10,000 steps a day. Read a really inspirational article in Marie Claire about these weight loss camps for kids - they've had them for a while in the USA but we've just got our first one in the Uk - some kids turning up having never done a day of excercise and 6 weeks later going home 2 stone lighter and ready to join basketball teams. Makes losing weight by July seem nothing at all huh? Lol!

One thing I hate about having bad coughs and throats is that all of the medecines for it are FULL of sugar! I was drinking honey and lemon mixtures before I went to ned (stop me waking up in the night from a coughing fit) then I realised how many cals were in one tsp of honey lol! Not exactly encouraging lol.

You look fantastic, and those definitely aren't love handles, they're just your hips. Your boyfriend is right about the hourglass shape and it looks wonderful (especially with a bikini, people without those natural curves would kill to look like that in a bikini I am sure) Congratulations!

Hi Ida, wonderful to have you with us. Yes it all sounds very familiar - so dont worry you arent alone - I hope your knee and ankle are feeling better.

Hi cocorosie - I've put on almost exactly the same amount since starting University, so don't worry. I also have the chocolate problem, so I've strted a lot mor esavoury snacking attempting to be too full on low-cal good foods to need the sugar boost. Gherkins are my favourite, as well as snack-a-jack rice cakes.

Well done theashter! That's really good news! Yeah I have those sort of whitish lines (which considering how ridiculously pale I am is quite ammusing - whiter skin is possible with me? lol) around my stomach area. I agree with queenmedia, just go for it! It's quite possible that a bit of sun would be good for the skin around that area, cus it doesn't see much all year round, possibly making them fade more easily over time.

I decided for sanity's sake not to weigh myself this week (period coinciding with easter - so I would be a lot heavier than usual - didn't need the negativity) so will post next saturday - hopfully I will have maintained over the Easter period - I did have a little bit of chocolate :S. How did everyone else's Easter weekend go?

Well done both of you Tongue out Just to say - I weigh myself every Saturday so will post every week after I have (hopefully without fail - even if the results are a bit depressing). I think a good way of keeping track would just be to post whenever you weigh, as long as the starting weight is on the post here then we'll be able to keep track. Hope everyone else is doing as well as you guys :)

Healthy Hair Vitamins

  • Vitamin A - Antioxidant that helps produce healthy sebum in the scalp. Food sources: Fish liver oil, meat, milk, cheese, eggs, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, apricots and peaches. Daily Dose: 5,000 IU. Warnings: More than 25,000 IU daily is toxic and can cause hair loss and other serious health problems.
  • Vitamin C - Antioxidant that helps maintain skin & hair health. Food sources: Citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwi, cantaloupe, pineapple, tomatoes, green peppers, potatoes and dark green vegetables. Daily Dose: 60 mg.
  • Vitamin E - Antioxidant that enhances scalp circulation. Food sources: Cold-pressed vegetable oils, wheat germ oil, soybeans, raw seeds and nuts, dried beans, and leafy green vegetables. Daily dose: Up to 400 IU. Warnings: Can raise blood pressure and reduce blood clotting. People taking high blood pressure medication or anticoagulants should check with their doctors before taking Vitamin E supplements.
  • Biotin - Helps produce keratin, may prevent graying and hair loss. Food sources: Brewer's yeast, whole grains, egg yolks, liver, rice and milk. Daily dose: 150-300 mcg.
  • Inositol - Keeps hair follicles healthy at the cellular level. Food sources: Whole grains, brewer's yeast, liver and citrus fruits. Daily Dose: Up to 600 mg.
  • Niacin (Vitamin B3)* - Promotes scalp circulation. Food sources: Brewer's yeast, wheat germ, fish, chicken, turkey and meat. Daily dose: 15 mg. Warnings: Taking more than 25 mg a day can result in "niacin flush" - a temporary heat sensation due to blood cell dialiation.
  • Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) - Prevents graying and hair loss. Food sources: Whole grain cereals, brewer's yeast, organ meats and egg yolks. Daily dose: 4-7 mg.
  • Vitamin B6 - Prevents hair loss, helps create melanin, which gives hair its color. Food sources: Brewer's yeast, liver, whole grain cereals, vegetables, organ meats and egg yolk. Daily dose: 1.6 mg. Warnings: High doses can cause numbness in hands and feet.
  • Vitamin B12 - Prevents hair loss. Food sources: Chicken, fish, eggs and milk. Daily dose: 2 mg.

* In the case of niacin (B3) which is mostly found in meat, it may be helpful to get some form of supplement as you are a vegetarian. It is also present in leaf vegetables, broccoli, tomatoes, carrots, dates, sweet potatoes, asparagus, avocados, nuts and mushrooms.

Make sure you are eating a well rounded diet, as a vegetarian it may be difficult to get protein and iron so make sure to look out for foods in which it is rich to substitute for the lack of meat (beans, tofu, legumes, nuts and seeds for protein and spinach, brocoli, sprouts and wholegrains for iron).

I'm sure you're mum would understand you're predicament if you explain it to her. If she is worried about having to cook seperate meals then why not look for tasty vegetarian meals that the whole family would like (try your local book shop for some great vegetarian cookbooks). Or why not try cooking yourself; offer to go grocery shopping with her and make it a social activity to find nice tasting vegetarian foods and snacks.

Hope some of this has helped x

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
