Hello to all my old friends and to the new friends that have joined since I stopped posting.

A lot has happened since I was last here. My grandson is living with us all the time now. D

DH has gotten a job but has also been diagnosed with a liver disease so prayers would be appreciated.  I have gained all that I lost from stress eating and want to try to ease back into a healthier lifestyle.  DH has lost almost 100 pounds and I am very thankful since that improves his liver problems hopefully.

I will try to read over the thread to get updated but, honestly don't know that I will have the time to read it all. There was a lot of time and a lot of posts between then and now!

How is Barbara? I have thought of her and all of you often.

I have also been ChaCha'ing for some extra money and that takes up a lot of time.

I hope all is well for everyone here and I will try to read and post more often. It is good to have accountability!

Ladies,

I just got this reply to an email I mailed to Barb's account:

Karen,

This is Warren, Barbara's husband.  She is currently in a rehab center so she can get intense physical and speech therapy for at least a few weeks.  She is in good spirits, despite everything she's gone through.  She smiled when I told her you wrote and about your prayers for her.

She said, "Don't give up, don't give in and don't forget to love yourself."  Wise words from a wise woman.

She is now receiving half of her salary and probably will be let go in a few months after the general election.  But she smiles and says God will provide and I know He will.

Thanks for writing and I'll try and keep you informed about what is going on with her.  It's hard seeing her this way, but she's a fighter and will overcome this.

Barb, needs our prayers and good wishes.  I wish we knew the address or her rehab so we could send a card....Please remember her in your prayers.

Karen

Prayers for all of those in need of comfort and healing.

I am struggling with stress issues and trying to remind myself to "breathe".  I tend to hold my breath in times of stress.

The weather is cooling off which seems odd.  August in the south is usually a hot and steamy nightmare!  Of course there could be a rebound on the temp front....

I have been accepted to work online for ChaCha but the site isn't working for me.  I am hoping that it will be enough to help our finances but if I can't get on the site to do the job it doesn't do finances any good at all!  LOL!  Ain't that just my speed?

I hope everyone has a great day today.  BREATHE!

Jodi, it is good to see you safely back from your vacation!

I have been walking with Paul or Luke every day for about a mile.  I have not been very good about recording my diet.  I dont know why I just can't seem to get back into the habit of that....I think I will just concentrate on maintaining for a while....(LOL, that is what I have been doing anyway!)  Delta Burke did that between every 10 pounds she lost.  She looks amazing, btw.

My nerves seem to be giving me fits lately.  Stress?  Probably.

Hope everyone is having a lovely week and that all of our struggles are in the past.

kekri84, are you weighing or measuring everything?  That is the only thing I can think of.  When I stop weighing and measuring all the food the servings tend to get just a little bigger.  I am still wondering if the weight issue and the menses issue might be related.  Did you ever take the pg test?  Are you into the new home?  I hope you and your BF and enjoying it!

I did take a walk with Luke today.  We made the 1 mile route but I didn't time it.  I forgot my pedometer.  Oh well, at least I walked.  I would love for Paul, Luke and I to take another one this evening.  I think the water may be too cool in the pool for Luke so I don't think we will be swimming today.

Spaghetti and meat balls for dinner tonight.  Probably a cucumber and tomato salad to go with it.  I'll have to watch my portions.

Has anyone checked out the GROUPS?  I took a quick glance.  Should our thread start a group?

Vablueangel, I hope your errand day is enjoyable and safe today!  Sometimes just getting out and enjoying the sun, the breeze and the world is a mood booster for me.  Years ago people went on drives for entertainment....I have been adopting that for myself again.  Gas prices being what they are now, a "ride" is a special occasion!Smile

Pam, your sorbet sounds delicious!  I'd love the recipe.  Do you use a machine or just freeze in the freezer?

Shizzigirl,  you'll make your goal of 8/29.  You inspire me with your hour long exercise sessions.  I am GOING to get dressed and walk with Luke as soon as I finish my cup of coffee!

Anthea1983, Applebees....I love eating out but the calories are so uncontrolled.  It is easier to count when you prepare it yourself.  Hungrygirl does expose's on restaurants all the time.  You know, when a restaurant or a store bought entree says it has this many calories but it really has THIS many calories.....

I agree with you that this thread has saved my diet on occasion too.

Penny, I have to confess, I did not kick around in the pool yesterday.  I got in but it was with Luke so there was no exercise.  I also didn't take a walk but I am going to as soon as I finish here.  The weather is cooling down and should only be up to 80 as a high today so this morning weather should be very comfortable to walk.

Walking on country roads.....My family had a cabin on a lake when I was growing up.  Real country.  The roads were named after the one family that lived on them.  People raced their cars even then 50 some odd years ago.  One lane dirt roads....Go figure.  Some people just don't have any common sense.  Looks like running into a deer and totalling a vehicle would make them S-L-O-W down!

I am OFF to get dress and WALK!

Hope everyone has a good day!

Hugs to both Barb and Vablueangel and prayers for everyone on this threads health and happiness!

Luke comes home today!  I plan on taking a walk with him.  I have been enjoying the pool routine for a couple of days but there is no kicking in the pool when the little fellow is here because I have to stay close to him in the water.  I can stroll with him though.  I do wish I had some pepper spray or something to carry in my hand to feel a little safer from the dogs in my neighborhood.  When we (Luke and I) walked last weekend 2 big dogs charged us.  Luke was strapped into his stroller so I couldn't pick him up.  All I could do was quickly turn and walk in the other direction.  It wouldn't have frightened me had I not had him in the stroller.  I don't have much fear of dogs but it terrified me for him.  I am going to have to find some pepper spray or avoid that route.....Sadly, that is my 1 mile route....People make me so mad!  There IS a leash law here but some people think they are exempt from the law....

I need to work on putting all my numbers into the site again.  I have been very lax about that and it shows.  No weight loss for me.Frown

I hope everyone is having a great day!

Prissy, don't let anyone rain on your parade!  You don't need the support from your workmates (it would be wonderful if they did but if they don't, wellTongue outto them)because we will always be here to support you.  Keep up your spirits and keep reading and posting.  We all need each other.

Welcome, Coalman!

I kicked around in the pool today again for another 25 minutes.

Barbara, I hope Fay just blows on by you and doesn't do your family or property any harm.  Don't give a thought to punctuation.  Your messages are clear as a bell.

Vablueangel, your writings aren't insance at all.....Well, if they are then I am insane too....You can visit anyone on this thread by pointing and clicking on their icon.  Mine is a pair of pink birkenstock sandles.  Yours is the question mark.  It will take you to that persons homepage and you can email them or read their profile or journal.  You can also get there by going to your journal and there will be a line right under where it says ""Valueangel's Journal"  it will say "My Journal"  "My Friends Journals"  and "Privacy Filters".  Anyone who you have added as a friend will automatically come up when you click onto "My Friends Jounrals".  Congrats on continuing to add to your exercise time.  You are doing a wonderful job at taking back control of your life!

She_bauer, Thanks for the cheer.  I know what you mean about the saying on your bosses door.  Chocolate tastes pretty darn good to me!

Anthea1983, you will reach your mini goal soon!  Whopeeeeeeeee!!

Cindi, congratulations on the 24 pounds!  YOu are doing a great job.  I am very proud of you and for you.  Keep up your hard work!

Renam21, let me share a little trick with you.  I don't always have time to do it and if I don't do it I just trust that everyone will understand but you can move the arrow up and down to read the posts and reply to each one as you go.  I may not be explaining that correctly....When you are making a post right above the box you are typing in is the last post you read.  To the right is an up and down arrow that you can move to see every post on that page.  If you need to you can even to back to another page without losing your reply.  I hope that helps you out a bit.  It is hard to remember the exact details of everyones posts especially since we are all here for the same reason.

I kicked around in the pool yesterday for 25 minutes.  It was nice.  I didn't go on the walk but maybe when Luke gets back tomorrow I will be inspired to stroll him around the neighborhood again.  He seemed to enjoy it and so do I.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Shizzigirl, well it definitely sounds like it tastes good.  You haven't done too much damage.  Just get back on track with your next meal.  The damage will be done if you don't.  Everyone has treats now and then.  Just use this as yours and get back on your program with you next meal.  You can do this!

renam21, I am so glad that you and your dogs are safe!  Those country roads can sometimes be a free zone when it comes to speed to some people.  I wonder what they were running from!?!  That thought can be so scary!

vbnet, I think my mini-goal is to get to the 230's.  Even 239.8 would be welcome right now!  Ten pounds at a time seems doable to me mentally but physically it is going slow!I guess I need to do a little more of thisSealed!

Salrob, dongrats on your weight loss!  You ARE in onederland!  Some of us are already there with you and others are on our way.   Sorry you are having problems with you DH.  They can make it difficult, can't they?  It is so much easier if DH's get on the wagon with us.  Mine is sometimes a big help and sometimes a big roadblock!

Erica, congrats on the 3.2 pounds !  You are doing wonderfully!

Vablueangel, I have added you as a buddy.  I love reading journals.  I try to do that on a daily basis because it helps me in staying on track for some reason.  As a buddy it is easier to read journal entries.  YOu and Barbara seem to have some of the same health issues.  She has had a stroke too.  Hang in there.  We will all get there eventually!  We can do this!  Oh, about the public viewing.  If you set your journal to "friends only"  it doesn't leave you to open viewing of everyone.  Just your friends can read the thoughts that you want to keep more private.

Shizzigirl, dancing is wonderful exercise!  It sounds like you had a great time at the concert.

kekri84, I don't think you are eating enough calories, sweetie.  After reading the information I posted in the thread above I am thinking about doing a snack of crudite and a cold bean dip . or potato salad (using Dukes ff mayo) or adding cold corn to salads on a daily basis..... I am going back to the site that I read that info on and seeing if they have any other suggestions.  Try upping your cals just a bit.  If you aren't comfortable with doing that every day then at least do it a couple of times a week.  Maybe have 1500 one day, 1200 the next or even a 1800 day once a week.  I know you are frustrated!  I am right there in the 240's with you.  I am going to give the resistant starch a try.  It can't hurt.

I hope everyone is having a good day.  I am going to try to get in a walk this evening when the temps cool of a bit and I may get in the pool too.  Thanks for the pep talk Penny.

I LOVE potato salad and here's a reason to eat it!

Potatoes get a bad rap as little more than a waist-thickening waste of calories. But amazing new research puts spuds squarely at the center of the latest weight loss buzz, along with other unfairly maligned carbs such as corn and rice. The reason: All these foods contain resistant starch, a unique kind of fiber you'll be hearing a lot more about. In fact, experts agree that it's one of the most exciting nutrition breakthroughs they've seen in years. "Resistant starch has the potential to become the next hot nutrition trend," says Leslie Bonci, RD, author of the American Dietetic Association's Guide to Better Digestion. Indeed, more than 160 studies have examined this little known nutrient's remarkable health and weight loss benefits. Resistant Starch: The New Power Nutrient

Although this may be the first you've heard of resistant starch, it's likely been a part of your diet most of your life. Resistant starch is a type of dietary fiber naturally found in many carbohydrate-rich foods such as potatoes, grains, and beans, particularly when these foods are cooled. It gets its name because it "resists" digestion in the body, and though this is true of many types of fiber, what makes resistant starch so special is the powerful impact it has on weight loss and overall health. As a dieter's tool it can't be beat: Not only does it increase your body's ability to burn fat, but it also fills you up and reduces overall hunger. Its health benefits are truly impressive as well. Studies show it improves blood sugar control, boosts immunity, and may even reduce your cancer risk.

Resistant starch is bulky, so it takes up space in your digestive system. And because you can't digest or absorb it, the starch never enters your bloodstream. That means it bypasses the fate of most carbohydrates, which get socked away as body fat when you eat more than you can burn. Here are two more key ways resistant starch can help you drop unwanted pounds:

It ups your calorie burn. Unlike some types of fiber, resistant starch gets fermented when it reaches the large intestine. This process creates beneficial fatty acids, including one called butyrate, which may block the body's ability to burn carbohydrates. "This can prevent the liver from using carbs as fuel and, instead, stored body fat and recently consumed fat are burned," explains Janine Higgins, PhD, nutrition research director for the University of Colorado's Adult and Pediatric General Clinical Research Center. In your body, carbohydrates are the preferred source of fuel, like gasoline that powers your car's engine. Butyrate essentially prevents some of the gas from getting into the tank, and your cells turn to fat as an alternative. One study found that replacing just 5.4% of total carbohydrate intake with resistant starch created a 20 to 30% increase in fat burning after a meal.

It shuts down hunger hormones. Animal studies have found that resistant starch prompts the body to pump out more satiety-inducing hormones. A meal with resistant starch triggers a hormonal response to shut off hunger, so you eat less. Research shows that you don't reap this benefit from other sources of fiber.Nature's Fat-Burning Breakthrough

We Found It: Why eating carbs can help you slim down--and how to do it right!

Provided by Prevention

Fighting Disease, One Potato at a Time

The research on resistant starch doesn't stop at weight loss. This powerful nutrient is also earning accolades as a major disease fighter from standard bearers such as the World Health Organization. Here's why scientists around the globe are so excited about its health benefits:

It can prevent cancer. Research shows that the butyrate created by resistant starch may protect the lining of the colon, making it less vulnerable to the DNA damage that triggers diseases, such as colon cancer. It can also create a pH drop inside the colon, which boosts the absorption of calcium and blocks the absorption of cancer-causing substances.

It may fight diabetes and heart disease.

Let's Dish Like other fibers, resistant starch helps control blood sugar levels. "Because it skips routine digestion, we see lower blood sugar and insulin levels following a resistant starch–rich meal," says Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, CDE, spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. Blood sugar control translates into more energy and sustained energy. It also means long-term heart protection, because chronic high levels of blood sugar and insulin cause delicate arteries to become clogged and harden.

It boosts your immune system. "When you have low levels of good-for-you bacteria in your digestive system, it's very difficult to fight off disease," says Joanne Slavin, PhD, RD, a nutrition professor at the University of Minnesota. Resistant starch may boost the growth of probiotics, the same kind of healthy bacteria found in yogurt that keep bad bacteria in check.

How to Eat Enough

Right now, there is no specific target for resistant starch intake. But preliminary data shows that the average American woman consumes about 4 g of resistant starch each day. Experts such as Gerbstadt believe the research is strong enough to advocate doubling that.

Adding just 1/2 to 1 cup of cooled resistant starch–rich food per day can do the trick. See "6 Best Fat-Burning Foods" below for ideas, and follow this advice to maximize your intake.

Keep it cool. In cooked starchy foods, resistant starch is created during cooling. Cooking triggers starch to absorb water and swell, and as it slowly cools, portions of the starch become crystallized into the form that resists digestion. Cooling either at room temperature or in the refrigerator will raise resistant starch levels. Just don't reheat. That breaks up the crystals, causing resistant starch levels to plummet.

Look for fortified foods. A growing number of commercial foods have been bolstered with Hi-maize, the brand name of a resistant starch powder made from corn. You can use it in baking (and lower calories) by replacing up to one-quarter of traditional flour in any recipe without affecting taste or texture (King Arthur Hi-maize Natural Fiber, $5.95 per 12-ounce bag; kingarthurflour.com). Or, look for packaged products that include Hi-maize, as another easy way to boost your intake. I am intrigued!

I haven't read all the posts yet.  We still have Luke and will be taking him home today if all goes as planned.

WELCOME to all the newcomers!  The more the merrier!  This is a great group of ladies (are there any gents?...I don't think so.  One or two may drop by occasionally but the regulars are all ladies, yes?)

Jodi, I will say a prayer.  Thank God it isn't cancer and that it can be treated.  You are right to enjoy your vacation.  A reduction could be a good thing, I guess.  I know it will all turn out okay for you.

Barbara, I am glad that you are okay and grateful that your son was with you.  If you get laid off you will be elligible for unemployment, right?  I know it won't be your entire salary but it is something and can help out.  My DH has been drawing it for a while now.  The economy is scary and there are no jobs to be had for a 63 year old man....There are few to be had for every age.  I pray that your insurance is with your husbands job and that you recover quickly.  We all think a lot of you, Barbara.  Please post as often as you can.

To all the new people, it would be a wonderful journey if you went back through our threads and read all of Barbaras posts.  She is a wonderfully supportive member who has had her fair share and more of troubles and tribulations.  Her health is a real battle for her.  She has gotten me going many times because I know that no matter what my physical barriers are I should be grateful for my health and that if Barbara can keep pushing then I should be able to as well.  The lady is a gem.

My prayers are with you and your family, Barbara.

Luke and I took a stroll yesterday.

I'll be back later to read all the posts that I missed.  I know Luke will be up soon and I need to get dressed for the day.

I hope we all have a good one!

Karen

Erica, congrats on day 2!  I am like you , once I start weighing I find it hard to not weigh every day.

I also relate to your mother....I love chocolate too.  Really not good for a low fat or a low calorie plan.  I just need to remember moderation.
