Weight Gain questions regarding anorexia and recovery May 08 2010

1) You are 2 cm taller than me and my absolute minimum healthy weight is 50kgs. 40kgs is incredibly underweight and no where near healthy !!

2) No, just because people are beginning to tell you that you are looking healthier does not mean you are healthy or any where near it, it does not mean that you can stop gaining or even slow it down. It simply means that you no longer look like you are going to die at any minute, just that you look like you make die within weeks. You are very very underweight. If you have just reached 37kg and have been gaining for four weeks, then you must have honestly been at deaths door and to be honest, you still are !

Keep gaining and do not stop until you have reached a BMI of atleast 20

Health & Support chemical hair straightening? May 02 2010

My hair is very very think, very very frizzy, very curly and there is just so so much of it. I can honestly spend over an hour straightening it so i dont bother very often anymore, ever though i love my hair straight.

One thing i have found that helps me to manage my hair is regular hair cuts so that it doesnt become such a ball of fluff etc. Im due for a hair cut this week and cant wait, its so more manageable when theres not so much of it.

Ive thought about chemically straightening my hair too but here why i wont ....

1) My hair is very brittle and dry (hence the frizziness) and im concerned that if i were to get a whole lot of chemicals put in it, then it would just fall out.

2) as you said, chemicals are bad bad bad

3) I think about the regrowth. I would have this lovely straight hair and then this horrible curly, frizzy regrowth

4) I like having options. I like the fact that if i decide i want my hair curly then i can just get up, get ready for my day, chuck some product in there and im done, lovely curly hair. If i decide that i want straight hair, then yes, it takes a bit more effort but it can be done. A big part of my problem with straightening is that i have really cheap straighteners, if i were to get some decent ones, it would take a significantly shorter time.

Maybe yu could weigh up your pros and cons

The reason you gain weight back first in your stomach/torso area is because that is where your vital organs are and your body wants to protect them. Fat is gained in that area first as a protective layer so to speak. There is nothing really important about your butt, legs, arms etc so you will find that those are the last places to regain weight/fat.

Over time, if you keep your calories up and stick to recovery, when your body is sure that it is safe, the weight will redistribute over your whole body.

You are watching TV and then he just starts unbuttoning his pants..... Im sorry but to me that just doesnt seem right. Its not just his decision to have sex and you should feel comfortable and want to as well.

I understand the bad experiences thing too, thats a big part ive why i wasnt so keen on sex to start with as well. One thing that really helped me was how caring my partner is. You know, its ok to just have cuddles, nothing turns me on more than my partner putting his arms around me and just lying there together.

Please please dont feel like a dirty whore as you put it, sometiems things things have to be discussed and if you arent comfortable discussing them with people IRL then a forum can be the way to go.

Honestly, with the info you have provided, it sounds like sex is kinda one sided. Its more about him and what he likes than it is about you. Ok i kinda feel a little uncomfortable saying this but oh well...... sex isnt supposed to be just put in in and get on with it. Wheres the foreplay, wheres the fun?

I think that its really important to discuss this with your partner and if you dont feel ok with that, if you are worried about his reaction, then maybe this isnt the right guy for you.

My partner and i had a great discussion about our likes and dislikes recently..... which for me was really really important. Im glad we talked about it and that i felt comfortable talking about it with him. I know new relationships can be difficult, awkward etc but if your dont feel comfortable discussing important things like sex, then to me, thats a serious problem.

Its important to feel safe in a sexual relationship and that inculdes knowing that your partner takes into consideration YOU !!

Im a little confused.... sorry for the graphic nature of this question but it might help clarify.... Can you not actually feel him inside you at all?

Now that that is asked..... im wondering......

Who most often initiates sex, you or him?

Do you feel as though you have to have sex with him, maybe when youre really not that into it at that moment?

When i first started seeing my current boyfriend, i really wasnt into sex at all. I had only had one other sexual partner, was really unsure of myself and my body (like you i have/had an eating disorder), and kind of really dreaded sex. BUT..... the more comfortable i became with just being with him, spending time together etc, the more i felt at ease and ok with expressing my feelings. Now im totally ok with saying what i do and dont like etc and am enjoying sex, yay!

From what i understand, the reason behind binging is that your body is doing everything possible to get you to eat more. Binging during recovery is not uncommon.

From what ive been told and experienced this is pretty much how it works. When you starve yourself, initially you feel great but after time your body cant handle it anymore. Thats why during severe restriction, all you can think about is food and eating, even though there is this huge part of you, and for me atleast, a negative voice that tells you that you must not eat. 9 times out of 10, you eventually give into the voice and end up binging. Its your body's survival mechanism.

As far as i know, the only way to prevent binges is to increase the amount of calories that you are eating throughout the day. If you are binging, chances are that even though you think you are eating enough, you really arent, hence the binging.

One way that i found helped me to stop any binges was to actually eat. I would starve myself for days on end and then end up binging. I went to treatment and was put on a meal plan which required me to eat something every 2 to 3 hours. Knowing that i had another meal that i had to eat in a small amount of time, prevented me from binging. I wasnt freaking out about when my next meal would be or in the mindset of "oh well, i'll just binge today and not eat for the next three days to make up for it".

The only advice i have for you is to prehaps increase your calories or spread them out over the day so that you are eating something every 2 hours or so.

I would reccommend seeking therapy to help you deal with the issues behind your eating disorder.

Im planning on getting my first tattoo soon too....

Im getting a butterfly because of the meaning behind it. I have been thorugh a lot in my 23 years of life and to be a butterfly signifies my journey... going from a what i was (catapiller) to surrounding myself with all my loved ones, and support system, working on my issues etc (cacoon) and then emerging a changed, stronger, happier and healthier person (butterfly).

Butterflies have always been a very important symbol in my life so thats guna be my first tat. Ive found a really great image to turn into a tat and i can add to it in the future. My plan is to get this image of the butterfly tattooed on big and htne in the future i can add smaller butterflies around it to signify important achievements in my life...

Think of a symbol that means something to you !

I can't believe it's even an issue.

"We understand that you'd like to die peacefully and with dignity, Mr. Smith, but we have this dogmatic moral hang-up about allowing you to do that. You can handle the suffering for another few months, right?"

I agree with this, when a person only has a short amount of time lf, they are in pain etc then i believe that they should have the right to choose to die.

Where is see there being problems is those people who have chronic conditions, who are expected to live for many more years but their quality of life isnt as good as it would have been without the chronic condition. Say a person with MS is having a severe flare up of symptoms, becomes depressed and decides that theyve had enough and want to die. In cases like that, where symptoms may get better, depression may lift and outlook on life improve... thats a huge and permant decision to make.

Please dont get me wrong, i dont want to see anyone suffer.....

But let me give you a personal example

My dad has had a severe progressive illness since i was a small child. He was told he would not live to see 45 (he's now 61). There have been times over the years where he has become very very unwell, he has believe that he will die (this time around). He refuses all medical treatment, he refuses to do anything to even ease pain and suffering, for example, oxygen. Every single time, my mum has taken the decision out of his hands, forced him to go to hospital where he has successfully been treated with minimal effort, returned home and gone on to have significant periods of time where he has been very well.

Most recently, he had a severe heart attack, he knew it was developing (he can normally tell a few days in advance that its guna happen). He told no one about his symptoms, and went ont o have a very serious heart attack. By the time the ambulance got him to hospital, he was dead, his heart had stopped beating. Now my mum, my siblings and i were travelling behind and were a few minutes later getting to the emergency department, by which time they had revived him. Only problem was that he had decided previously that he did not want to be resuccitated in such an event. BIG PROBLEM.... Anyway.... Dad goes on to make excellent recovery, its been 3 years since the last heart attack..... If he had been allowed to die all those years ago, we would not have had this time with him. He has lived and still lives and very happy life.

So in those types of situations, i believe, is where the issue gets cloudy !

Sorry for the long post

I lost my period when I was around 120, and that was in June 2009.

So you lost your period at 120, but what was your pre ed? (im assuming here, what ever the reason was for you weight loss) what was your weight prior to losing weight.

I had normal periods from the day they started. I could tell you to the day when it would come. That is until i became so overweight that they stopped. My periods stopping also coinsided with me developing a huge cyst on my ovary which could have been implicated in me losing my period. Anyway...... i developed an ED pretty soon after having emergency surgery to remove the cyst and have not had a normal period since.

For the first 6 months or so after my surgery my periods would come roughly very 6-8 weeks, but int hat time i also lost around 60lbs. My period stopped altogether at a very health weight for my height but after losing around 120lbs.

They only recently returned to a relatively normal cycle, after eating much better for a good 3-4 months.  Keep in mind that i have never been underweight, was a healthy weight when i lost my period. For me, it had alot to do with how much wieght i had lost and what weight my body was "happy" with allowing me to have a period.

I am still a healthy weight, i think BMI of 21 but i know that if i drop down to BMI 20, my periods go.

Maybe you need to get you weight closer to your pre weight loss weight

Health & Support Severe Abdominal Pain When RUNNING. Apr 30 2010

YES!

That sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing when I go running... but odd thing is that I haven't changed anything about my routine; whether that is eating or drinking. I tend to eat some light (such as fruit) about 2 hours before I go out running and drinking water has never affected me in the past, so I tend to drink it whenever I feel like it.

It's frustrating to say the least. I love to go running, but 95% of the time I purposedly concentrate on my breathing so as to try and prevent these pains. But regardless, sometimes they just hit me out of the blue... !

You said you suffered from something that sounds similar; have your pains subsided? Or do you still get them when you go running?

Heya

I still get them occasionally..... i amke sure that i dont eat or drink anything well before i go out.... that i pace myself etc but it does still happen from time to time.... I have no idea why.

I dont run often anymore because of it..... it even happens when im at the gym, running on the treadmil.

Sorry i cant be much more help... i just read your post and was like, AH thats totally what i get.

Ive not spoken to a doctor about it as i figured i would just change up my exercise to accommodate it but if running is your thing and it really is interfering with it, then maybe speaking with a health professional is the thing to do.

Ooooooo i think ive had the exact ame thing you are describing... its different to a normal stitch right... different place and more intense.... More like someone stabbing you in the gut with a knife ??

Ive had this happen a few times and the only the i can think of is that i had eaten or had something to drink too soon before running. The only way i can get it to stop is to slow right down to a very very slow walk and wait for it to ease..... it can sometimes take a good 20mins or so to go away and i dont start running again in fear that it will happen again.

How soon after eating or drinking anything does this happen when you run?

Going #2 once or twice a day is normal, totally normal.... i wish i could go that often !!!

I have a friend who goes #2 after every meal she eats, so atleast 3 times a day...

I wouldnt be worried about that. As for the softness of the stool, i also think thats good. If its too hard then you would become constipated.

As for getting you period back... you seem to be at a healthy weight BUT what was your weight before you lost weight and had to gain? At what weight did you lose your period?

Thanks for the info ladies....

Nessi - yea, when i was younger i wanted to go on it. I was told that due to the side effects or possible long term results of being on the depo, that i couldnt have it. Since then though, ive had alot of problems with my cycle, it was nearly non existant for a long time there.... would show up out of the blue afte rnot having it for 4 or 5 months...... I also totally suck at taking medication so with those things combined, my dr and i decided that the depo would be best.

I know there are risks but im young (23) and dont plan on having kids any time soon. Hopefully when the time comes, i dont have too amyn problems in that department. I hope that youve been able to get pregnant since !!!

This reminds me of a neighbor I had when I lived in the UK. It was always in the middle of the night and he would shout things like "SHUT THE **** UP!"... he also lived alone. He was scary. He was about mid 40's in age. I'd get woken up in the middle of the night with him just randomly shouting "****!!!" over and over again.

I think he was harmless... just odd. I kept away from him though.

People are prob guna think im totally insane.... im not BUT

Since i was around 14, 15... ive had what i call a "negative voice" in my head. Its not a voice really, its not psychosis or anything like that, more like unwanted thoughts that pop into my head.

Anyway, at times these unwanted thoughts can get so frustrating, mainly at night when im trying to go to sleep, that i actually do shout "shut the **** up" out loud. Im not shouting it to anyone, but it helps to just scream it....

Im not saying that this is what is happening etc but some people just have quirks....

Im totally not crazy :)

Ive lost 60kg (132lbs), im 23 and the difference between how i was treated and how i am now treated by all people, not just men, is amazing.

I get beeped at while im walking down the street, guys offer to help me with equipment at the gym, i get drinks bought for me if i go clubbing etc. That never ever happened when i was fat. In fact i clearly remember times when i would go clubbing when i was fat and i would have guys come up to me and tell me how disgusting i was etc.

How long does it take for the swelling to go down ??

Ive experienced this same type of thing both in summer and winter... its also Autumn here...

For me when it happens in summer, its due to the heat... i swell up like a balloon especially when exercising....

In winter its due to chill blanes..... Makes it even more painful. My hands swell up so badly that i cant make a fist...

I duno, i would say to have a doctor check it out.... maybe get kidney functioning tested??

Hi there

I had the same concerns as you. I have an ED, have done for around 3 years now.... Ive been to residential treatment and in outpatient treatment for most of that 3 years.... Recently discharged (3 months ago) because i didnt want to get better anymore.

THEN......

I went to a friends wedding about 1.5months ago, met a guy, started seeing him, was put in a lot of situations around food that i wasnt comfortable with BUT i managed. I havnt told the guy im seeing about my ED and i wont unless it becomes an issue, which right now, its not. Ive found that since i started seeing him, ive become a lot more relaxed with my rules and routiens.... for example, if its time to go to the gym but im out with him, i obviously cant go and thats ok.... i just do it another time....

I think getting into a realtionship is something that is a very personal decision and only you know if and how you will cope. Maybe right now isnt the best time, it seems as though your ED is very in control right now....

Getting into a relationship turned out to be a great thing for me, it gave y mind something else to think about other than food and weight. It means that i get out of the house more, that i an less isolated and therefore my ED has less time alone with me to work its destructive magic.

Not All Processed Foods Are Created Equal
Fact: a diet containing whole, fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the best for a healthy mind and body. Although true, it can be hard to keep food fresh at home for longer periods of time, and if you have no time to shop every few days, boxed and canned foods become appealing. We often hear about heavily processed frozen dinners and processed foods worth avoiding, but there are minimally processed foods that do pack a lot of nutrition and may be worth having in the fridge or cupboard.
