| Foods | Wheat and Grains Controversy... | Feb 06 2013 17:08 (UTC) |

There is a difference between "gluten free" and wheat free naturally. If you go standard gluten free and replace all of the normal breads with their gluten free counterparts, then yes it is very expensive, and you won't lose weight. I gave up wheat over a year ago, and I eat things that naturally have no wheat in them, and from time to time, I enjoy a sandwich with gluten free bread. Check out the book Wheat Belly, and see if it may be also because of any replacements you are using in your diet. My budget for food has not gone up at all in the past year. I don't eat wheat. |

I gave up wheat over a year ago. I am not celiac, but I had a hard time controlling my apetite, even when eating "healthy whole grains", veggies, fruits and counting calories. I was starving all the time (1500-1700cals daily). Grains do not provide any essential nutrients that you cannot find somewhere else, but even the whole grain versions do a number on your blood sugar. As none of us here are professionals, I would recommend you pick up the book Wheat Belly, and then give it a try for yourself (30 days full on no cheating). This was written by a real doctor. All I can speak from is my experience that life without wheat is amazing! I lost 50 pounds in a year and I DO NOT count calories. I eat when I am hungry and I actually feel full and satisfied after meals. But I quit eating wheat, and I eat a minimal amount of other grains. |

Maybe investigate a Paleo option. It's lower carbs, and no grains or dairy, but you should lose weight and feel amazing. I like www.paleoplan.com . |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | Natural birth or epidural | Feb 13 2012 19:39 (UTC) |

Claudiek, Be prepared for anything, and don't be disappointed if it doesn't turn out the way you hoped. My intention was to not have an epidural. I wanted to deliver my baby naturally for many reasons. However, I ended up being induced because my son was late, and he was getting quite large, I was also very swollen, and was having a hard time moving the last few weeks of my pregnancy. All that aside, I really wanted to deliver naturally. When it came down to it though, I wasn't progressing, they had to break my water, I still wasn't dilating, the doctor statrted discussing the possibility of a C-section... After they broke my water my pain level increased exponentially, and I still didn't dilate past 4. I stayed that way for over 2 hours, no progress, and decided that for me an epidural was the right choice. I didn't know how long it was going to take, and I couldn't imagine being in that kind of pain for another 12-15 hours. For me the contractions were 1 on top of the other, but my back would not ease out of the contraction. There was no relief. So, long story short, I went from 4 -10 in 2 hours (about 6 hours after I got the epidural) and pushed him out in about an hour. If you want a natural delivery, your best bet is to go through the Bradley Method Classes. Also, tell your nurses not to ever suggest pain medicine. Tell them you will let them know if you need anything. Have someone on hand to reiterate that to them if they start pestering you. I made the decision completely on my own to have an epidural. My nurses were fantastic. They asked me what I needed, but never suggested anything (like pain meds, epidural, etc.). They offered other options like an exercise ball, heating pad for my back, etc. because they knew I wanted to try and do it without pain meds. Oh, another random tip, if you don't like your nurse for one reason or another, like they are really not doing a great job, they keep pestering you about epidural, or they are being extremely rude, ask for a new one. Ask for the Charge Nurse, and let them know the issue, and ask to please get a new nurse. My prayers are with you! You'll do great no matter what you decide. |

My MIL WAS very clingy before my hubby and I were married. She lives over an hour away, but he saw her about 3x per month (either she came to visit here, or he went there). When we got engaged, he had a very interesting conversation with her about what the bible talks about. (We are strong Christian believers) When a man and woman are married, he is to leave his mother and father and cleave to his wife. The expectations change once marriage enters in. Although she said she already knew that, she was very upset and offended when he told her that their relationship was going to need to change to make room for me as the woman in his life. He is the baby of 4 boys. Now its like 5 years later, and we are always busy on weekends, but we invite her up about once a month...she never comes...we haven't seen her since the 4th of July. I am 17 weeks pregnant now, and she still doesn't visit. SHe never asks to come up or anything like that. Honestly it kinda hurts. But, we set the ground rules from the start. And whenever there is a conflict, my husband talks to her about it. He is loving, but honest and direct about our needs. He doesn't let her manipulate us, and we don't feel bad about lovingly expressing our needs. And if she "tries" to use manipulating words, we let her that its not ok. Maybe your hubby needs to sit down with them and talk about your needs as a couple. Its not that you don't love them, its just that you can't spend your weekends and vacations with them, you need your time together. Let them know you want to spend time with them, but it can't be all the time, and although you appreciate the invitations to everything, if you aren't able/don't want to come, they have to understand that its not because you don't love them, its because you have other plans with each other. |

What would you recommend for a seat then? Would I be better off investing in padded bike shorts? If so do you have any brand recommendations? |

1 or 2 eggs and 1 or 2 pieces of wheat toast with land o lakes spreadable butter or 1 tbsp peanut butter on 1 slice of wheat bread with 8 oz milk or Steel cut oats with natural applesauce and cinnamon or 2 hard-boiled eggs Honestly, the breakfast I prefer is eggs and toast. I stay full the longest, and 1 egg only has about 90 calories. I don't have any cholesterol problems, so I eat the yolk because it has TONS of nutrients. |

I am having a good week. I lost all of my binging water weight PLUS an extra pound. I hope to be below 180 by the end of the month. Its slow going, but finding that "sweet spot" of exercise/eating the right # of calories has been a challenge. I think I am going to up my cals to 1500 and add in a bit more exercise. I find that if I try to stick to only 1200 or so, I am more prone to binging. I didn't notice that tendency when I was eating 1500 cals. On another note I bought a bicycle yesterday. a real one. My first in about 10 years! I am getting a helmet today, and I plan to ride my bike to work a couple of times a week. My work is about 5.5 miles from my house, which I could commute to in about an hour on a bike. My hubby and I share a car, and in the morning if I drive him to work, my commute is about an hour by the time I get to work (he works way north of where we live and where I work). And then an hour in the afternoon to go get him and come home. I thought that the commuting time could be put to better use if I rode a bike! Not only would I be commuting, I would be getting a significant amount of daily exercise. I will let you all know how it goes next week! |

what about doing some jumping jacks and push-ups on commercial breaks? Or jogging in place? How about doing as many cardio punches as you can in a minute? Or doing some squats? Even these little bursts of 3 minutes of exercise can really add up. For me, I feel more motivated to exercise after I have exercised...It feels good and I want more. Its just that initial push to do it. Try going for a nice walk. I live near mountains, and sometimes just going for a 20 minute hike is really AWESOME!
Why not start off with a more attainable goal? How about "exercising" for 3 days a week for the first 2 weeks, then bump it up to 4 days, then 5 etc. etc. Also, what kind of exercise do you LIKE to do? SO many people think that exercise has to look a certain way...what if you took a dance class? Or bought a bicycle and went bike riding? Or went swimming? Or what if you did workout videos.... Just some thoughts. Its easiest to commit to doing something regularly if you really enjoy it. Or have 1 day a week be jogging, and 1 be workout video day, and 1 be bicycle, and 1 be going for a hike. |

I am having a good day. I just got off of a 4 day "binge" however. Pretty much I ate a lot more junk than I have in a month or so (taquitos and icecream thursday and Friday), and now I am pretty sure that I am retaining about 5 pounds of water weight from all of the sodium...UGH!! I feel kinda gross and tired from it. (if i go back and do my calorie count, I think I was at 2000 a day except for yesterday where I am pretty sure it was closer to 3000 thanks to 2 pieces of cake!) Plus its TTOM. It made it challenging. But today is a new day, and so far, I am on target to eat about 1250 or so calories for the day. I am going to spend the next few days eating VERY clean and around 1200 calories to help get the garbage and sodium out of my system. Hopefully by Friday I will see that water weight go buh-bye, and I will be back to where I was last week. I walked today also, and I plan to take another walk in a few minutes after I am done eating my veggie lunch. How is everyone else doing today? |

WHen I have eggs and toast for breakfast versus having a bowl of high fiber cereal, I find that I am full until lunch, and then my lunch even seems to go farther. SO yes, I have experienced this too! |

unfortunately you CANNOT change the natural shape of your body. You can make it more muscular, but if you are a pear then you are a pear. I too am a pear. And for the longest time I hated my body. I wanted to be a stick. But alas, I am not. My thunder thighs right now are too thunderific, but that's nothing that 40 pounds of weight-loss and some bigger muscles won't fix. I will always have a pear shape though. My body will always deposit fat in my hips and thighs. And personally, as a woman, I love my curves. I feel like I look like a woman, and to me and my hubby, that's great! |

Its not necessaruly all water weight. Have you SEEN the biggest loser? The first week these guys are on the ranch they pull these huge weight loss numbers. If you've begun eating right and exercising, I say some of it is real fat that you have lost. Congratulations! Just make sure to keep eating right (including getting ENOUGH cals.) and exercising, and watch the pounds come off! I only wish I could drop 16 pounds in a little over a week....but not so healthy to do that at 190 pounds... |

Congratulations on your weightloss so far! I am very inspired by you right now. Thank you for sharing your story! I can't wait to hear more about how you are doing. One thing that might be scary, but really helpful for you to see your progress is to take pictures. That way you can visually see how far you've come if you hit a point where you are having a hard time. Just a thought! Then you'll have amazing before and after pics to show off your hard work and accomplishments! |
