| Weight Loss | Is beer REALLY that bad??? | Jan 30 2007 21:54 (UTC) |

| I drink 2 or 3 nights a week, and usually 8-12 drinks when I do. I'm having great success in losing weight. As far as beer is concerned, recent studies have proven that it is equally as good for your heart as is red wine. The same effects. Other studies have shown people who drink 10-14 drinks/week live longer than people who do not drink or who drink less than that quantity. Those who drink more live the shortest lives. Just watch the calories. What was tough for me was that after getting home from a bar I would want to eat a full frozen pizza with extra cheese -- or more. Drinking made me hungrier. I had to eliminate that practice. | |||

| 33,000 calories a day? How? How is that remotely possible? That's like 11 large pizzas with extra cheese -- every day. How?!? If it wasn't so disgusting, I'd almost admire that kind of drive -- it would take a hell of a lot of time and money to put away that kind of food! | |||

| It's what you burn by living -- and what you burn with your activity level. It factors in the option you chose (Sedentary, light activity, moderate activity, or very active). It's not just what you would burn sitting idle -- unless you chose sedentary when setting up your goals and account. | |||

What you're wearing does have an impact -- if you're wearing anything. I weigh at the same time (in the morning) right before getting in the shower. Cuts out the other factors a little better. Weighing once a week can be good so you don't see those ups and downs as much. However, you could also weigh in on a low day and then one week later weigh in when you've got excess water weight. Nothing is more frustrating that working hard for a week and showing an extra 1 or 2 pounds from the week before. I weigh everyday, but if you weigh only once a week, be weary -- or at least aware -- of those intracacies (sp?). |

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm beginning to think that some of the people who post here are doing it for fun. They aren't as tiny as they claim and they aren't anorexic. They're just looking to ruffle some feathers. A previous post from another person said : "I'm 4'10 and 66 lbs. Help me lose more weight." That could be true. But she's been a member since September. She's read stuff. I doubt A) it's true and B) she wants help. >>>> I'm sorry. I could be wrong. She could be in dire trouble. I doubt it. I just don't buy it. I think some of these people who post these hideous stories are absoultely in trouble. Eating disorders are real and they are horrible. I do NOT mean to make light of them. Those people, those who suffer from them, are real and they need help. However, as many times as that stuff is posted (especially by people who post who have been members for months (i.e. seen all of these posts a million times)) I think a lot of it is just to get your goat. This one caught my attention, and ire, because of the fakeness to the post in general... "websiteee" "lbssss" "lbss" Diett" tipss" "Heyy" ??? Please. This is crap (if I'm wrong I'm sorry). This seem like manure gone nasty. If I"m wrong, I applogize. But this seems faker than the fakest fake thing in the history of fakeness. |

| bigtwinky: Nitro Fitness is the same company, but for men. They opened it (from what I heard -- I have no documentation) because they were about to be sued by men who claimed sexual discrimination. So they reached a compromise and now have Nitro's popping up all over the place. I guess they have a point about the discrimination -- but "separate but equal" is no more legal... | |||

I'm in almost the same situation as you. I am 27, 241 lbs (started at 255 on Dec. 17) and I burn 4k/day. Once I started eating healthy, I've found it hard to eat ENOUGH calories. I should be eating nearly 3,000/day, but I rarely go over 2500. I am losing at a rate of about 3 lbs/week. When I cut the calories down too drastically I didn't lose as quickly. I was trying to do about 1500/day, and it wasn't working. Now I'm losing nicely again. It's actually hard to get that many calories (which is funny, since I used to eat 4-5k/day easy), but it's necessary. And you said you aren't getting much to show for your intake when it comes to your output in the bathroom. With the number of calories you're taking in, it's entirely possible that your fiber intake is way too low. Try to bump that up. I'm eating All Bran cereal, and it contains 13g fiber per serving (I eat 3 servings) and has 70 calories per serving -- pretty good... Good luck! |

dwilliams, I think you're getting a little defensive... I read what fmjess said, and it wasn't an attack on you -- at all. Fmjess actually showed faith in you. The post said that you can probably keep losing that weight by doing what you've already learned in your program. It said that you can find good information here with regards to calories, motivation, and exercise. The information, fmjess suggested, is all you need now. You have the motivation and the background to keep it up. Fmjess seemed to be encouraging, but urged you to think about saving money since you've learned how to do it! Maybe I misread that post, but I don't think so. I didn't see any rudeness or venom at all. The motivation comment simply said that paying for motivation isn't worth it if you are already motivated. Clearly you are. Motivation isn't worth a lot unless it's a trainer forcing you to do work (i.e., the cattleprod metaphor). Since you have the motivation, fmjess was suggesting you might not need to pay for what you already have (motivation, information, and a good start in your weight loss goals). Then you attacked. "I'm losing - obviously you're not." That was rude, probably incorrect, and unproductive. Anyway, I wouldn't put you or anyone else down for going to any weight-loss program that works. Good for you. Congrats on your lost weight and your daughters. But your attack was unfounded. Now I'm bracing for your attack on me... Good luck. |

Zeke: Calorie dense usually seems unhealty. Too much fat or sugar. It doesn't seem right to load up on nuts and peanut butter and OJ. Maybe it is, and it's just a hookup I'm having as a newcomer to this healthy eating thing. I'll start adding peanuts and such. It just seems like I'm eating so healthy, and adding that stuff seems counter-productive. I guess I'm wrong. That's why I made the post -- to get suggestions like the ones provided. Thanks. |

I use dressing for the salad, but it's really low-cal (Salad Spritzers -- 1 cal per spray). I used 40 sprays and half a bag of spinach. Apple and peanut butter is a good suggestion... I'm just worried about eating too much fruit or fruit juice because of the amount of sugar it contains. I'm not doing low-carb, but I'm concious of them. Thanks for the ideas. Anyone else? I mean, the serving sizes I'm having are HUGE as it is, AND I snack constantly. I feel tempted to go back to frozen pizza, extra cheese, and a 12 pack of beer -- then I'd get my calories :) |

| Weight Loss | Protein Shakes Advice Needed! Make you lose or gain weight? | Dec 21 2006 01:30 (UTC) |

| A book I was just reading 5 minutes ago cited a study. That study claimed protein takes only 2% of the calories to digest, while complex carbs took 22%. If true, that would make the carbs a much more effective weight loss food than protein. That report is a huge and conflicting report from the one hybrids detailed above. I never know know what to think or believe. Lots of potatoes or lots of chicken? Studies back up both. That's one of the hardest things about starting a diet -- figuring out which "experts" are right! | |||

Yeah, the post on the Fitness board was deleted. Apparently you can only post on one board, which is a shame. I'm sure different people frequent the two boards, and I'd like to have gotten answers from both groups. Oh well. Thanks for all of the ideas; they're really appriciated. |

Alright, thanks for that. It's just that I'm not eating less food to get my calories -- I'm just eating low cal/high healthy foods. It takes a whole lot of chicken and spinach to equal 3k! I need to lose 60#, so I'm shooting for 5/week for at least the first month or two. I'm working out daily -- both cardio and weights. Hopefully I won't lose the muscle. But if I have to lose a little muscle to lose a lot of fat, it would be worth it! I'm not doing a fad diet, either. I'm simply eating healthy. I haven't looked to any structured diet -- I wouldn't follow it. I just swapped the daily pizza for fish/chicken, and the extra cheese and french fries for spinach, almonds, and mushrooms! Thanks again... |

If you run, you need $90+ shoes. The difference between an $80 running shoe and $90 running shoe is litterally double the quality. You will get 250-300 miles out of the 80, well over 500 on the 90. I know it's a lot to pay for shoes, but once you do you will understand the difference! Not to mention, you replace them so much less frequently, they're not that much more expensive than payless or wally-world shoes. I like Nike running shoes the best; a lot of people prefer New Balance. I would steer clear of Adidas for running shoes. Tried them twice and they are just too heavy and not durable enough. If you want to go cheaper, find an outlet mall; those shoe stores almost always have an area with shoes that are last season's model at a tremendous discount. This advice, of course, has been designed for a runner. If you're just biking or weight lifting I don't know what to tell you. GL. |
