I'm assuming that you've gone vegan for ethical reasons. If so, I'd say "eat the stuff" - an animal died to produce the gelatin, so if you dump it it's making the death even MORE unnecessary.

But then, I'm not a vegan and am unlikely to become one, so I have a different viewpoint.

Agree with this^^. When I went vegetarian, I decided I was going to avoid wearing leather (as much as I could) as well. I wouldn't throw any item I already had away, just use it until it fell to bits.

This is the point of the thread, to ask what to do with it. I refuse to throw it out because, yes, an animal was involved in making it and I wont waste it. I will use, if I must. I rather use it in baking for friends.

I just feel guilty sometimes.

Vegetarian Soy. Bad or good? Nov 02 2011

I mean after breast feeding. Babies usually get bottled formula but I'm vegan so I don't want to used cow milk powder.

The article I read said for thyroid but also that it can cause premature puberty and possible infertility (I realize the percentage is low but still I worry).

So yes I'm sorry for the confusion, I meant after breast feeding.

@ambereva
Yes I can see it's possible, so that's why I'm asking.  I do get a bit paranoid sometimes.

I suppose I could try to find a cupcake or the like recipe that would use up the honey and give it to my friends.  They loved my vegan Halloween cupcakes :)  Great idea!

Vegetarian Vegetarian Parents: I need your help Nov 01 2011

okay, so I'm not a parent YET. But I have been thinking about issues that may come up when I will have children as I am Vegan and plan on raising vegan children.

Issues that will come up:

Hot lunches
People disagreeing with your choice and possibly going behind your back
People thinking you are HURTING your children
Making sure they fit in. (besides hot lunches, you have bday parties and class events)
Bullying

How to solve some issues:

Prepare your own child's hot lunch.
Make sure you are able to ignore people's comments.
Have Vegan/vegetarian candy/treats for your child for those days

And just overall explain to your child that animals are friends and we don't eat our friends. :) I'm sure by the time they get to school, they will understand enough to know why they don't eat certain things and why other kids do.

Vegetarian faux meat Nov 01 2011

I don't buy a lot of faux meat, but we do eat it.

My fiancé enjoys it because he was the mcdonalds 3xs a day kind of guy so something that makes it seem like he is eating meat satisfies the craving he gets and it makes it a little easier around his friends and family since most of them aren't supportive of us being vegan (he's vegetarian with minimal dairy and no eggs right now, it's been hard for him to let go of mozz cheese).

I don't think they are overly expensive here but the sodium content isn't wonderful. I have been trying to use them less but they are great for on hand when people have last minute parties and don't tell you.  Plus omni's usually like them.

Also, for people who imagine the idea of "faux meat" is gross and why be vegan if you are going to eat "FAUX meat".  Honestly, they are good in their own right, not as something pretending to be meat, but as a food.

Vegetarian Going Vegan Oct 28 2011

I've been vegan for a month and finding something to eat out is so hard.  Here in Canada (and you can ask to double check) apparently BK's Veggie burger patty is now Vegan. They even cook it on a separate grill, it did say that it may go on a belt and sit in the warming area with real meat so you should ask them to put it in the microwave. Of course the sandwich has mayo, so you'd have to ask for that to go of.

I usually get a salad.

Mock meats have iron.

BBQ chicken from gardein has 20% Iron in 110 calories.

I'm a new vegan and quite enjoy the mock meats

Plus my fiance who hasnt quite made it to vegan yet finds they really help with the transition.

Fitness Urgent Elliptical or hiking? Apr 15 2011

Original Post by sybil878:

To answer your question, if your goal is a specific calorie burn then it sounds like you will exceed it with your hike alone as your hike is more intense than your regular workout.

That being said, your calorie burn meter on your machine is leading you down the wrong path (unless your wearing a heart rate monitor that links into your machine). The harder YOU work, the more calories you burn. Your machine is telling you a guess based on how fit it thinks you are. It's calculating the burn the same for a 5'2" 200 lb woman as it is for a 6'3" 200 lb man - obviously they wouldn't be anywhere near the same physical ability and the woman would be working harder and burning more calories at the same pace.

Unless you enjoy your 2 hour workouts, you could look at the 'distance' you go in your 2 hours, and generally speaking as long as you get to this distance you will be burning about the same number of calories. Go faster and get it over in an hour or 90 minutes.

Or better yet, if body shape is your goal do 45 minutes of HARD cardio followed by 45 minutes of weight lifting. Or if you're really time crunched do a 45 minute intense weight circut with little or no rest keeping your heart rate high. (this is hard though so probably only twice a week would be best)

My machine has a heart rate moniter, yes. And when I go on my elliptical, I do feel as though I work really hard, after the first 45 minutes, the super hard ones become even harder and I make use of the swinging arm handles. Also since the level of the machine changes I cannot achieve as much distance as I could on my fat burner level in which I didn't burn more calories. The fat burner slowly went up and I could go 7km in a half hour, easy, but burned half the amount of calories on the one that changes in level and can only go half the distance in half an hour.

Edit: I also eat a light meal before I exercise so I don't "run on dry". And as long as there is something on TV that can keep me busy, I could probably go for more than two hours.  It's how I got first in my 6K run in school (co-ed). I had a music player and by paying attention to the music, I didn't even notice my asthma until I finished.

From a different member I was told it was an HIIT (but I could have misunderstood).  It goes easy, Hard, moderate, superhard, easy, hard, moderate, superhard, moderate, easy. Each lasting three minutes each.

Also, we went with his friend and they decided on a spur of the moment at the friends house to go. So I asked my fiance to get water because I was shy and they forgot.

And I don't feel like two hours is too excessive, it's not at the gym, it's in my house and so it's possible I don't get my heart rate up as high as I should.  But I sweat and have lost a tiny bit of weight since doing it.  And I want to burn the "900" calories in sense to equal two hours of the elliptical because I don't want my body to be confused.

I just want to keep the same level of exercise because other than my workout I don't do much moving around.

I hope you don't think I'm hurting myself in any way (as a child I had to do a paper route that consisted of 5-6 hours of running/jogging from 1am to 7am and then go to school and run 6 k in PE)

Edit: Oh yea, and the being sick while hiking, it was after a heavy meal and my asthma was really bad, it's not bad enough to need a puffer, and it will get better as I exercise. But even in school when I was very active and very fit it would affect my day.

Weight Loss I keep cycling the same then pounds. Apr 14 2011

For, oh I guess 3 years now I've been like a yoyo.  When I was 18 I weighed 130 (5'4") and I didn't see how amazing I looked and I obsessed over losing weight. My eating habits change with my dating status, when I was single, I easily lost weight and when I'm dating, I gain weight.  I went up to 170 when I was 19 and then went down to 140 by eating LOTS AND LOTS of salad with chicken and then occasionally sushi. I kept that weight for over 6 months and then met my now fiancee where I'm at 180 and just shake my head at how crazy I was when I was 18 and looked amazing but didn't see it.

I guess if you monitor your calories well, you could maybe try to fit extra exercise to counter your binge. But don't feel guilty.  The one thing that took me the longest to learn is that it's not a DIET it's a LIFESTYLE change.  So things like ice cream aren't "BAD" foods and veggies aren't "GOOD" foods, they're "SOMETIMES" foods and "EVERYDAY" foods.

By thinking like that I was able to eat a lovely ice cream bar yesterday for 100 calories and I enjoyed it and it didn't ruin my weight loss plan.

(Also, try to have a reason to lose the weight besides "look great" because usually that's because it's how others see you, I have a wedding that doesn't have a date because I want to be healthy for it.  It's my one special day and it's worth every bit of sweat.)

-When I am a bit hungry and can't get rid of a junk food craving. I grab a tiny piece of milk chocolate and take delicious small bites and it usually goes away and I know it wont hurt me.

2 hours on the elliptical is my usual time. I can't get that great of a calorie burn/half hour.  I usually get around 215 and I wish I could get 500 but when I tried as hard as I could (and nearly wasn't able to finish the first half hour because of it) I only upped it to 240. It's a HIIT set and I was never able to ever sprint even when I was fit because of my asthma.  With two hours I usually get 900 and then I even try to fit in 3 sets of sit ups, scissor kicks and side leg lifts. I even managed to use a 10lb weight and do bicep curls while I was on the elliptical. And maybe another half hour to walk the dog. With the normal household chores.

I'm not hardcore, just very determined.

Eggs contain healthy cholesterol! It's called dietary cholesterol and it's found naturally in products such as eggs, offal and prawns.

What really has an effect on your unhealthy cholesterol is saturated fats. These can be found in products such as butter, red meat, cream, cakes, biscuits, hard cheese, pastries and many processed foods.

If you're really worried about cholesterol the first thing you should try to cut out are the foods containing saturated fats, not the foods containing dietry cholesterol.

Like you suggest, I would 'zero it out'.

Thanks :), I do try to make sure I don't eat lots of saturated fats, for milk I have skim (and love the taste), I don't eat cheese really, my butter is usually a healthier kind, but even if it isn't I don't really use it for much, red meats I also eat rarely and now I'm trying to eat just fish for meat and I haven't had cakes or biscuits in forever.

So I guess since the eggs are A-OK, my cholesterol is probably pretty good.

Yea that's what I read too, that it's only good cholesterol, but would I then in a way "zero it out" for my daily values and only count other cholesterol items to get a more accurate reading of what my cholesterol levels are?

Sprints/HIIT I'm looking in to but short burts really kill my lungs (I have mild asthma).I haven't experimented with my ellpitcal at all, but I don't know how much resistance I should use or if I should do it by distance covered which with less resistace steps I would be able to do (like if they stayed at 6 instead of going up to 8 for 12 minutes).  Which one would be the better workout, or if a variation of long dist/ low resistance and low dist/ high resistance would be even better.

I don't know much about weights at all so I'm not sure what I'm trying to explain so it's probably useless jibber.

My boyfriend was a virgin, and my boyfriend before that too (and I was a virgin at that point).

Actually I had a friend tell me the exact same thing about the breast exam being the one she doesn't like.

--I rather not tell my dad, he won't get the grandkid talk either seeing how we do use protection. It's not that I really care about what my dad thinks more than the talk about how I'm going to go to hell for having sex before marriage.

Yea, surgery would be a whole lot worse.

I doubt with how careful my boyfriend and I are, and seeing how he's in college in alberta for 200/365 days in the year, I doubt I'm going to be pregnant within the next 3-4 years.

Well, I am 18 and sexually active, so it's not to the point of one or the other anymore, haha, it's both and I KNOW I have to go. I know it's going to be weird at first, but it's better to know now then find out when it's too late. Pluuuuss, The Pill would be a nice thing to have (would put my boyfriends mind at ease, even though he's in alberta most of the time, but when he isn't =D).

I just don't know how I'm going to get it done, by that I mean, get there and such, if I even leaked to my parents that I want The Pill, my dad would freak (and I live on my own....and I can't drive).

There is a walk-in clinic not too far from here, but still, I don't know if that would make me feel any better.
