Many (most?) people who eat very unhealthy diets know the potential health consequences but make poor food choices anyway... the same can be said for most of the bad choices we humans make on a regular basis. We know what we're getting ourselves into but we do it anyways because it makes us feel good (emotionally, physically, whatever). Smoking makes some people feel accepted by a group (of smokers, bonding together behind the bar or on the deck at the party), and the nicotine gives you a little buzz. I don't think it's fair to single out smoking as any more abhorrent or less understandable than say, stuffing your face with highly processed, extremely low quality "food" every day. As someone who smoked for four years (quit almost two years ago!) I found it to be quite rude and hypocritical when I would be at a bar and get chewed out for smoking by some falling-over drunk who was destroying his liver six nights a week. We all have our vices. You probably have yours too. |

I find treadmill running extremely difficult specifically because I can't zone out! When I am running outside my mind will wander so much I more or less forget I am running. Someone earlier in the thread mentioned playing out conversations so they always end with you getting that great zinger in there... yeah I do that too! I also make a lot of mental lists. I don't normally run with music and I find it much easier to drift away. Makes the time pass much more quickly on long runs. |

Original Post by carmenxox: I think I have misled you guys by using the word "weightlifting" in the subject line. I am training for a marathon. I have to do long bouts of cardio or I will not be able to run 26.2 miles on race day. I absolutely appreciate that weightlifting can help me look and run better (and I be incorporating more useful weight training from now on!) but at the end of the day I still have to log a lot of miles, end of story. Also, and I think more importantly, I love long distance running and I would NEVER give it up, not for faster weight loss or a better body or better muscle capacity. I am definitely intrigued - and somewhat intimidated - by HIIT but I want to give it a shot... I'm sure there are a zillion threads on here about it so I am going to go read up. Thanks for all your help. PS. That picture will haunt my dreams |

I really don't know what causes them but I definitely know what you're talking about. I've found that drinking a LOT of water helps. |

In my experience a 1300 calorie deficit is fine. Maybe tomorrow or over the next few days keep it to an 800-900 calorie deficit and you are back at a 1000 cal average daily deficit! So basically spin class just gave you a nice cushion for the weekend, good job! |

Thanks for the advice from everyone! I am going to try to do more interval training (ughhhh) and do some strength training with higher resistance. If it gets me out of this rut I'm all for it! =) |

amethystgirl, I think you rock and you give awesome advice. But I am a vegan and I can't take an article seriously that uses "self-cutting emo vegans" as an example of someone who doesn't have any muscle. Also my cross country coaches in high school were fanatical about making us do really high reps and low weights, so it's not just Shape telling me that. Edit: I should clarify- getting toned would be nice, but I really just want to get in the best running shape I can. If the kind of "weightlifting" I am doing is really endurance training, I am okay with that if it is going to make me a fitter runner! |

| Weight Loss | Are you supposed to eat less on your non-active days to lose weight??? | Nov 06 2009 00:10 (UTC) |

You should try to maintain a deficit but don't go below your BMR (the amount of calories your body needs to exist if you stayed in bed all day). You can calculate it here: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ If you find it hard to eat less on the days you dont work out, try looking at your calorie intake over the week instead of day by day. I find it easier to focus on a weekly deficit. You said you can maintain on 2100-2300 calories, so multiplied by 7 that is 14,700-16,100 calories each week to maintain. If you want to lose a pound a week you need to subtract 3500 calories from that, so you should be eating between 11,200-12,600 calories a week. |

awestendorf, I do lunges and squats and stuff, anything I can do at home (no $ for a gym membership). I do like 45 minutes of various exercises that I have gotten from the fitness forums, online, Shape magazine, etc. I do not want to do any heavy resistance training because I do not want to bulk up, just get toned (high reps, low resistance). I have been really careful about counting calories, and I have not been eating really differently than I have for the past several months. Also, what is a macro? Thanks for the advice about mixing up the running; I didn't really think about that. I realize that running 10 miles burns fewer calories now that I weigh 158 than I did when I weighed 173, but I definitely log many more miles now than I did when I was first starting. Shouldn't that make up for the difference? jdunckel, how often should I do interval training for weight loss? I kind of hate it so right now I only do it like 2x/month. I occasionally race 5 or 10Ks and am building up to do a marathon, so I know I should be incorporating it more often as part of my training anyways.

I eat between 1500-2000, depending on how far I ran that day. My deficit is usually around 600-700. |

Your deficit is your burn meter minus your eat meter. So let's say at the end of the day I have burned 2400 calories, and I ate 1500, that gives me a deficit of 900. It would be nice if CC gave us a deficit meter! Maybe that's something you can suggest on the CC forum. |

Original Post by rosieblue: Whoa, take it easy. I assume you are being sarcastic but please keep in mind that the OP is 16. Maybe the parents are not in the picture or not able to support him or her because of extenuating circumstances. The OP came here for help and support, not unnecessary criticism. And saying "be thankful you're healthy enough to work two jobs" doesn't really apply to a 16 year old, since most 16 year olds are healthy and would likely only be working 2 jobs because their own/their family's circumstances are not great. |

Your weight fluctuates day to day based on hydration, salt intake, menstrual cycle, even how heavy the foods you ate are (regardless of their calorie count). You can't expect the number on the scale to drop consistently every single day--if you weigh yourself every day you need to pay attention to the trend, not the actual number. I weigh myself every day and my weight jumps up and down by as much as 3 lbs every day. Thank god for calorie count... enter your weight into the weight log each day and make sure the TREND line keeps going down, even if the blue line is jumping up and down in little spikes. I can't really help with specific calories you need to be eating but I'm sure one of the many helpful people on here can tell you how much you ought to be eating! They will probably ask you how much you generally exercise--sedentary, lightly active, moderately active or very active? |

Thank you for your response =). When I said I normally eat 2000 I should have clarified that I meant on days I don't work out so hard. I try to shoot for a 500-1000 calorie deficit every day. Even though today the deficit is 1500, 2500 calories just seems like SO MUCH when I am trying to lose weight! I just have to remember that I burned a ton of calories today! |

Hey I have pretty much exactly the same stats as you (23, around 160, 5'8) and I try to NEVER go below my BMR, which is like 1550. Maybe the more experienced CCers can correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought BMR was the very bare minimum your body needs to run itself in a given day? Like, if you were in a coma. Maybe you're eating too little on the days you're eating around 1300 cals, especially if you are working out! My little burn meter tells me that I burn around 1850 calories sedentary, so even eating my BMR and not working out, I still end up with a 300 calorie deficit. Try eating at least your BMR and see if that revs up your metabolism a bit. |

Thanks for the advice jane! I have been eating enough, but maybe you are right about variety. I've just gotten so lazy lately and not wanted to stray from what is quick, easy, healthy and filling, so I eat a lot of the same foods every day. I noticed that I tend to binge almost exclusively on carbs, so I'm not sure that it's my body crying out for nutrition... maybe just for something yummy and comforting. I like your advice about leaving 300 calories for something filling and will definitely try that tonight. Ultimately I think it is really just that I am sick of always thinking about food! I feel like it takes up a lot of mental energy to watch what I eat and count calories. I have been doing this pretty consistently since April and had lost around 20 lbs before I started this unhealthy eating pattern, but I was always frustrated that the process was so slow! I know it is stupid but I was jealous of people in the forums who would be like "I cut out soda and lost 13 lbs in 2 months!" I make really healthy food choices, rarely overeat (until recently), and get good cardio in 4-5 days a week (which I accommodate for in my daily caloric intake). But I still was losing max 5 lbs/month. And now 5-10 of that has come back in a matter of weeks. Ugh. So maybe you're right and I need to take a break. I am just nervous that my weight will continue to go up. I weighed myself this morning and my weight has actually gone up 8.5 lbs. I hope part of this is because TTOM is coming soon and I tend to retain water. |

Original Post by naturallyd: Word. Thanks for the advice and encouragement everyone! I know I just gotta reign it in a little and the pounds will start coming off again. Jessrene, good point about the salt intake. I have been salting my food like a crazy person lately and I didn't even think about the effect that would have on water retention. I rarely salt anything but lately it's been like, "Hmm, salting a piece of French bread? Sounds delicious!... a little slice of tomato with that pile of salt? Don't mind if I do!" Hmm. Maybe I'll try to cut back on the salt intake and see if that does anything in terms of water weight. I logged my weight today. My little ticker guy looks very sad. |

Good to know about your minor vacation setback- that definitely makes me feel better that most of it came off quickly! In terms of activity level, I definitely am really active but I also eat a lot on the days I am. My BMR is just over 1500 so I never ever go below that, and on hard workout days eat as much as like 2300, but I normally try not to go above 2000 if it's just a standard workout (like 5-6 miles). If anything, I am concerned that I am eating too much on the days I work out, since I know a lot of people don't lose weight when they start exercising because they think it gives them a free pass to eat as much as they want. You said I should make sure I'm not limiting myself too much. How much is too much? My daily deficits (before this 2 week slip up) were usually around 500 and rarely more than 1000. I have eaten mostly vegan for more than a year and am wondering if this could be the culprit that caused me to overeat, because my body is craving some sort of non-vegan food? |
