In marathon training, you get your mileage up so high that you need extra fuel, or you will burn out. And so, in order to sustain their training, marathon runners need to take in a lot of calories. The best marathoners do so with a very clean diet, but the average person doing his first or second marathon will just get those calories any way possible ... which is why marathon training is no time for trying to lose weight. You'll be super hungry all the time, because you're burning crazy calories. That said, marathon runners do lose weight most of the time ... I lost 20 lbs last year. But if you start with a big gut and lose fat through marathon training, you might still end up with some fat. As was said above, running is one of the best exercises for burning calories ... and that's the main factor in burning fat ... burning calories combined with diet can put you in calorie deficit. But to return to the original question ... there are so many good exercises for burning calories, and running is just one of them. I've been trying jump roping, and that's a lot of fun, you can do it in your house, and it burns a lot of calories. Kayaking, hiking, walking, swimming, biking, strength training ... any of these will help burn fat. |

Well, it could be a number of factors, including but not limited to: * You're eating more than you think. Perhaps your serving sizes aren't what you think they are? You might want to measure more carefully to check. Or perhaps there's extra calories in snacks or drinks you're consuming? * You might be weighing yourself at different times or on different scales. Weighing yourself can fluctuate wildly throughout the day ... to be accurate, you need to use the same scale, at the same time of day, and take into account whether you've used the bathroom. For example, I always weigh myself right when I wake up, just after using the bathroom. * You might be taking in too few calories ... below a certain level, your metabolism slows down and you don't lose much weight. * Maybe you haven't given it enough time ... how long has it been? * You might not have a TON of water weight, but water retention can happen for various reasons, and that could have more of an effect than you think. My suggestion is to give it more time, and if you still don't see results, decrease your calories a bit or increase your exercise. Be patient! :) |

Thanks guys. I mean, it doesn't really matter much, but when I enter a workout in the activity log here at CC, it feels disingenuous to log the whole time when the real burn didn't come until 5 mins into the workout. I guess you could log two separate activities in the log ... the more intense workout as one activity, and the less intense warm up and cool down as another. But that would just take more work. :) |

Thanks. I'm pretty healthy, and both my kidneys work ... well, as far as I know. I'm sure I'd feel it if one stopped working. :) I guess I should get my blood pressure checked. Haven't done that in well over a decade. I know, I know. Not smart. |

Well, instead of having the argument be over the calories of your diet, maybe you should enter the diet into the calorie-count system and let us know how many it is ... if it's over 1,200, you're OK calorie-wise. And in terms of fat, the diet also looks OK. I couldn't tell you if you're getting enough protein or calcium or other nutrients without running the numbers, but you should also look at those. I think the diet is healthy (assuming it's enough calories) ... but you should also look at what your goal is -- maintaining weight, losing weight, building muscle, etc. and tailor your diet for that goal. |

I know a lot of people feel this way, especially in the beginning. But the truth is, no one is watching you, really. People don't care how much you do or what you do ... and in fact are not tracking you at all. You could walk in, lift a couple weights, and leave, and no one would care or notice. That's the reality that I've found. So don't worry about it! However, that said, I've found myself more comfortable working out at home or with a running partner. |

Original Post by chelseagirl: I think that if he's doing all the work you'll be burning considerably fewer calories. :) But at any rate, your heart beats faster when having sex, no matter who's doing the work, so you could be having an aerobic workout just by lying there. I'd recommend changing positions every 10 minutes to get a full body workout. Kama Sutra and all that. Be sure to hydrate, get extra protein (no dirty jokes), and wear a HR monitor. |

I've been trying a workout at home with a jump rope and some calisthenics ... pushups, crunches, lunges, squats, dips, etc ... all with bodyweight. Very good workout, no equipment needed other than a jump rope. |

The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
