Fitness Best Exercises? Feb 28 2009

Best advice I've ever heard came from a program on PBS called "Fit or Fat?" Any exercise you enjoy is best. Does it make you smile? Why is that important? You will do it more often and for a longer period of time.

e.g.  I like putting Celtic music on the stereo and cleaning house. Amazing how much fun cleaning can be and with that music I tend to jump and kick a lot.

Health & Support Metabolism problems Feb 27 2009

GI Jane's right on it. My best advice is to eat well in the morning--no less than 300 calories, eat the 3 meals with no less than 100 cal snacks 2-3 times a day. Pay attention to your lean protein, carb balance.  Slowly increase your calorie intake by 200 calories per week. Keep exercising.

When you start waking up hungry in the morning with the increased calorie intake, you are on the road to increasing your metabolism. Keep that calorie level for a couple of weeks before trying to decrease the calorie intake. Decrease in smaller amounts. Then return to your new metabolic level.

Make sure your starting point is at 1400 or above.. but if you are below that now just increase gradually till you get there. It is counterintuitive to increase calories to lose weight. Remember you're not just changing the calorie intact, your changing your sugar balances as well--getting more levelled out which has many healthy benefits.

I enjoyed this thread. I had the same problem in the 70s when I went to clubs. For some reason guys think you're there to pick up a date--of course the "Ladies night" doesn't help. I've used the boyfriend line and one guy was particularly persistent. "He doesn't have to know..." then "I feel like a wall is between us..."  D_straight!! I put it there.

Overtime I developed a look that tended to stop things before they happened. Of course drunks don't get it anyway. I taught a young friend of mine how to do the look. It's really very simple. Think of something very invasive. In her case she liked doing liver dissections. In mine I think of taking out their eyes and ripping out the testicles. Doesn't matter--it could be cooking them--whatever.  Just look at them and imaging that thing. They really do tend to back off.

Self defense wise the groin is not the best target--they usually protect it. A slight stomp to the instep stops all but those so messed up they can't feel pain and you can pretend it was an accident.  OOPS!! Sorry!

I love Pink's music. "Just you and Your hand Tonight!"  Yeah!

Pregnancy & Parenting How much did you gain in the first trimester? Sep 18 2008

OK it's been a while, my baby is almost 16. But I gained too much weight for the OB nurse the first trimester. However it was all in my breast since I started as a D cup. So I didn't put too much stock in what she was harrassing me about. I was constantly harranged about the food I ate, yes even rice. I cut down my salt to the point I got sick. When I increased the salt a little it helped tremendously.

My son was healthy, 2 weeks early and small. Enjoy healthy, well balanced meals and be sensible but not neurotic (I know that is difficult when pregnant). I have a cook book written by a nun which has several quotes. This is my favorite, "'Everything in moderation including moderation' God said that I think."

Fitness Sitting on Yoga Ball? Sep 18 2008

I tend to stay in motion more when I use the ball as opposed to a chair. Plus more effort to stand and sit each time I get up. What I really like is when I'm on a boring call I can do modified situps or deeper side to side motions.  I just have to be careful not to go too far. I have lost balance completely a time or two. LOL

I liked going to karoke. But how about your own reinactment of the scene in When Harry Met Sally where Meg Ryan does the orgasm imitation.

Niacin, Fish Oil, Multi-vitamin, Glucosamine-Chondroitin, Sam-E

Reasons high cholesterol and bad joints.

About Niacin flushing, take a baby aspirin before and be sure you've eaten recently. Once I started the ld aspirin, the flushing stopped. My joint problems are partially due to the statin drugs I was taking for cholesterol which caused me to stop exercising all together. I'm still on a statin but it doesn't hurt as bad and am slowly rebuilding the intensities of my workouts. Feels good to be active again!

Sounds like it in reverse. It's supposed to be the amount of sun exposure...but I think for me it is also the amount of allergens.

Make a decision to do something positive. View each thing you eat as a positive also. Then check your blood pressure, iron, and for depression.

I get like this every fall. I find that I get depressed and restart my anti-depressant medicine. I have SAD which is Seasonal Affectiveness Disorder.  But there are other factors, so get checked out.

Fitness Walking with wrist weights Sep 17 2008

there are also thigh weights that work well whether you are walking or running. I'd be hesitant for using the wrist weights for anything other than toning exercises, due to the risk of injury.

Be sure to stretch your calves and achilles. Coke bottle rolls on the arch are nice too. Do the ankle exercises: rotation and drawing the alphabet with your toes. Do strengthening exercises by raising on your toes & trying to walk with heals off the ground (short time only). Graceful you can do this when holding the baby--but be gentle with yourself.

And my favorite, massage the ankles & supporting muscles when taking a bath.

I used to turn my ankles very easily and broke one on stairs when doing laundry (dangerous!!) so I've seen my share of ankle issues.

What a horrible, sucky, messed up place to be in!

Windrinre, what a wonderful answer.

When you think about it, you are powerless over many things and have no control whatsoever of the outcome. The additional stress of the situation is going to push you and push hard. The question is when and how are you going to push back. You've already decided to push back by helping in the house and being there for her.  Her care is vitally important, but care of yourself is even more important. Before you can take care of anyone else you have to take care of yourself.

Ask her healthcare workers for references for you. You should be able to find others who can give you real life advice.

I have a story called the Parable of Recovery that may help---

The first day, you are walking down the street and fall into a hole. It's deep and you are shocked and pissed. "Who put this here?!!" "It's all their fault I'm in here." You thrash around and throw dirt. Eventually you see a way out and climb out of the hole.

The second day, you are walking down the street and fall into the hole again. "well" you say, "I've been here before and know how to get out".

The third day, you walk down the street and see the hole, yet fall in anyway. "What here again. I tried not fall in."

The fourth day, you walk down the street and very carefully walk around the hole. You congratulate yourself for not falling in.

The fifth day, you walk down a different street.

*warning* I may have summarized your post incorrectly.

Call the doctor's office again and ask for the nurse to call you. Also ask how long it will be before you get the call. If the nurse can't answer your question, she/he will check with the doctor.  Let them know you are not comfortable with taking the medicine because 1) you feel like it is not serving the intended purpose aka get you back to having periods and 2) with your ED history, you are concerned about the side effects, particularly hypoglycemia.

On your next visit, get the doctor to go through your history (will help if you've written it out). When they are having difficulty diagnosing, sometimes it helps to go backwards. Ask the doctor how sure she/he is of the diagnosis underlying your problem of not menustrating. There are other things they may want to check to increase the confidence.

"Oh that sounds great, but do you know what I've been dreaming of?"  Is a great line. It's great they want to honor you. And taking a "off diet/guilt free" day for that day would be wonderful and in the long run probably keep you staying on your new lifestyle longer.  So what would be ideal? One of my favorites is to go a restaurant and everyone order desserts and do a round robin tasting. That way, I can enjoy it all and not feel over loaded afterwards.

It's your birthday, and 4-0 is big and you are on your way to make your 40's healthy--so enjoy it, give yourself permission and do lots of laughing.

Fitness The Parent Work Out- How do you lose weight while raising your kids? Aug 18 2008

I started working out with my son when he was a baby. While laying on the floor--I would balance him on my legs and extend and retract them. Great stomach exercise. Then we graduated into him standing in my hands while I lifted him in reverse push ups. I counted in different languages.  As he got older I called him my personal trainer to sit on my feet and help with situps...  The funniest thing was when my son was 3 the doctor asked if I got any exercise. I said "I have a 3 year old." He just didn't get it. Laughing

He is now 15. Much more fit than I am, but still likes working out with me. We've done karate and aikido together. I'm so glad to have the nice relationship I have with my teenager.

You guys have fun with those kids. It is a joy!

Weight Loss This is unbeliavable!!! Aug 18 2008

Beate, I've been in your boat and have had a hard time understanding how someone who is active and overweight could have low metabolism. (I'm looking for research on it.) A year ago I went on a diet and didn't lose any weight but I knew going in it was hard for me to lose, so my goal was to increase metabolism.  The diet went from 1200 to 1600 calories. I was comfortable eating at 1200 but had a hard time with the 1600 so I drank alcohol for the difference. :-)  I came off the 1600 level, but felt my metabolism had increased because I was hungry more often.  I continued to concentrate on eating frequently. It is counter intuitive to increase your calorie level to lose weight, sounds like it goes against the "calories in/calories out" rule. However, metabolism is a 3 ton monster that needs to get smacked around to behave.

With CC I've lost an amazing 5 pounds so far, I've had one plateau after losing 4 that dropped the weight loss to 2.8 pounds.  Read the other advice and hang in there.

I've never had a bruise get worse just because of increasing my heart rate. So give it a try and be sensible. After the first few steps where the muscle starts stretching out, which I would expect to be painful, then judge whether you are getting better or worse and act accordingly. "No pain, no gain" was a phrase created by a sadist!

Original Post by sufferinghearts:

I am the person that always wants to solve things myself when I know sometimes I can't

Ohhh that is sooo me. However when things are beyond what I can handle or when I notice that besides having a bad bump in the road the road is headed the wrong way, I know I need help. However because I am someone who wants to be self sufficient, I supplement what ever help I get with my own work.  Oh don't get me wrong, I still have plenty of stuff to work on. But taking control and responsibility for my life is healthy so long as I know I can always, always, always get help and I'm not in it by myself.
