I think there's some research that supports the idea that sweet makes your body react with insulin, whether it's caloric sweet or not.

hkellick is right about the caffeine. I've also heard carbonation has a diuretic effect.

I drink diet because my husband is diabetic. I prefer not to drink caffeinated beverages, even though I love diet Coke. It makes me off-balance, if not jittery. Better to keep things clean.

If you have appetite troubles, I'd recommend looking into a book called "The Volumetrics Weight Control Plan".

At its core, it's about controlling weight by eating foods that have low calories and high satiety relative to their volume -- in other words, they fill you up and keep you feeling full. Many of these low-cal, high volume foods contain a lot of water -- veggies, milk, and so on.

Mine wasn't very dramatic.

I was in karate class and we were doing a kata called sanchin. Our sensei walked around testing our stances, which involves kicking and punching and pushing to make sure our muscles are  tight. He checked my stomach and grunted.

Now, I don't know what he was grunting about (he does that a lot), but I realized my tummy probably felt pretty soft and squishy, and I should probably do something about it.

You can camouflage a little with the right clothes, but you can't hide from sanchin testing.

Change of clothes/undergarments, spray deodorant, and/or baby powder if it really concerns you.

I do karate. I used to have time to take a shower beforehand, but can't anymore. It's a really sweaty undertaking.

I think you're probably also more concerned about this than anyone else is. . . we have close contact in our class and nobody's body odor is noteworthy, even after a full day's work.

Ouch, but I'm sure he didn't mean for it to hurt.

Maybe you could sit him down and explain what you're doing and ask him to help you. At 5, he'd probably be tickled to be mom's cheerleader (and maybe even exercise buddy), and you can start teaching him healthy eating habits to boot.

The easiest things I can think of to reduce calories off the bat. . .

Ask them not to put anything on your toast. Many of these places brush or spray butter or margarine on.

Opt for ham or Canadian bacon instead of bacon or sausage.

For eggs, poaching is best, but fried is not that bad. According to my Volumetrics book, a large poached egg is 75 calories, while fried is 92. They may be able to do egg whites or egg substitutes.

Those are just some thoughts. What do you usually eat when you go to these places?

Meredith, be careful.

Nah. . .

I think the question is, what are you really willing to spend your calories on?

I can eat a lot of junk. But when I think about the calories, I think about whether I really want to put it in my mouth. Do I love the taste that much, or am I just stuffing things in my gullet?

This does not preclude a good dinner of steak and mashed potatoes, a beer, a glass of wine, a piece of cheesecake. It may preclude the automatic seconds I used to take.

But if I think about it, most days it does preclude donuts, muffins, potato chips, and cake. I'm not crazy about these foods. Why waste the calories when I could eat a good piece of chocolate or a cup of wasabi peas, things I really do enjoy?

Alternately, I don't eat things just because they're healthy. In the fruit realm, I try to eat a variety, but my heart really lies with oranges and mandarins and honey tangerines and pineapple. I'm lousy at eating apples, even though I keep trying to buy them. Why bother?

You just have to figure out what satisfies you. Some of those things will be lower calorie, like my oranges, so eat more of them. Others will be higher, like a good steak, so go sparingly.

The sources I know of body-weight or free-weight (dumbbell) exercises are no longer in existence or no longer free.

But. . . this very topic was covered in a book published a few years ago -- Strong Women Stay Slim. It has an exercise routine as well as information on eating.

For body-weight exercises, there are pushups for arms (and core muscles), crunches for abs, squats for the thighs and glutes, and calf raises for, well, calves. If you can do those regularly, you'll be off to a great start.

I do Goju-ryu karate and kobudo (weapons). Used to do another Okinawan style of karate before moving to Canada.

I do it for the psychological effects mostly. I'm a happier person when I train.

The martial arts are also a good way to make peace with your body -- it's not just about how you look or your endurance level, but also about technique and control. You can be overweight and still be proud of what your body is capable of.

Not that we all aren't striving to lose poundage, but it's good to have a balanced perspective.

Hi susanbeth,

Congrats on your new commitment! You sound a lot like me, so I had to respond.

This is my first time really trying to lose weight. Oh, sure, I read the books, try to avoid simple carbs, try this or that thing, but this is the first time I've sat down to count calories.

I, too, love the food log. I'm also setting small goals -- my first goal is to lose 8 pounds and I'm over halfway there. Yeehaw. :)

What I'm specifically doing:

According to another website, I burn about 3,000 calories a day on average. I typically exercise 3x a week, 90 minutes each time, doing martial arts. I've set my Eat Meter to 2, 500 calories (still a daily deficit of 500 calories), but tend to hover around 2,000 anyway.

Try a group activity or a class -- it really helps you stick to it! Think about martial arts like karate -- it's great exercise with lots of great side benefits, physically and mentally.
