Hi Vyperman. I haven't posted in awhile (changing jobs, life turned upsidedown). I took a little break from lifting basically because all of my energy went into job hunting. I am an advocate for NROL4W. It totally changed my way of thinking. I have never in my life lifted the weights I currently lift, and I'm nowhere near where some of the ladies on here are lifting. I feel like I'm in better shape now than I ever was in my 20's or 30's (I'm 40, btw). And, when I started lifting again 2 weeks ago, I was very surprised I didn't lose much strength. I only dropped 5 lbs from each lift, and now, I'm lifting 5-10 lbs heavier than I was before. I have about 15-20 lbs to go before I reach my goal, but I'm not really looking at the scale. I just want to wear a bikini this summer on our cruise. I tell everyone I know about this book. Maybe I should be a spokesperson :). I'm starting stage 6 tomorrow. I am looking for the next thing to do after I finish, as I need a workout plan. I wouldn't know how to design my own workouts, which muscle groups to work and when.

Viperman, You are going to make one heck of a trainer! Do you have any idea how much money you could make when people start coming to you after they fail to see results from their current trainer? Not to mention all of the testimonials from your current trainees. Great job! This thread makes me glad I have a home gym. My friends are starting to notice, and are actually paying attention to me when I tell them how heavy I lift.

I don't even bother talking to my boyfriend about it. The first time I tried to get him to do full-body workouts using multiple muscle groups, he just sat back and said he's been lifting for 25 years, and he knows what works. So, while I'm kicking my own arse with every workout, he's doing bicep curls with the bowflex. And he never does lower-body weight training, because, in his opinion, he runs, and that's good enough for his legs. But, I have to admit, he does have a nice bod for a man his age. At least he's doing something to stay in shape. Now if I could just hone in on his nutrition :). |

I suffer from the same exact thing! I have always been active, but I've been limited from being very active due to my dizziness. I have recently stopped power walking with the women from work because I couldn't do the entire 2 mile walk! I make it about 1.5 miles, and I can barely walk back to the office. I have tried eating sugar packets, peanutbutter, water, gatorade, some of it helps a little, but none of it keeps the dizziness away for the duration of the workout. I could never play basketball on a school team, run track, or do an hour of high impact aerobics. I have had this since I was 10. I've had numerous tests, and I finally had some neurologist diagnose me with migraine associated vertigo. It seemed to fit my symptoms, and sometimes, it's associated with a headache, but mostly, just dizziness. The weather and heat bring it on too, not just workouts. Unfortunately, I have just learned to live with it. I pace myself. I found that I'm finally able to get through an entire turbo jam dvd or tae bo video. I push myself a little, but don't go all out. I also find that HIIT with the jump rope doesn't affect me negatively at all! Yet I can't run long distances, and I haven't been brave enough to try sprinting to see if my sprints would be short enough to not affect me. |

There is no correlation between fat loss and weight loss. You can definitely lose fat without losing weight. The key is definitely through lifting heavy weight. In fact, you may even gain a few pounds due to muscle growth. Unfortunately, I want the scale to go down. When I started NROL4W, the scale stopped, but I was losing inches around my body. So, the fat was leaving, but my muscles were staying and getting stronger. Now, thankfully, the scale has started to move again, because I really can't see how I can continue to lose the amount of fat I have left to lose without the scale going down a little :). |

Now that I think about it, I guess my butt goes quite a bit lower. I was trying to emphasize not leaning forward with the knees. |

Is it possible you're not leaning back far enough on your squats? If that's the case, drop the weights and do bodyweight to see how that feels. You want a 90 degree angle between your upper thigh and your shins, meaning your knees should not be leaning forward. I have bad knees and squats don't hurt them at all. It's the lunges I have to be careful of. Keep at the push-ups and do as many prone jacknives as you can. I laughed my a** off when I was doing my first prone jacknife, but I consistently got better. The first workout, I could only do 1. By the end of stage 1, I could only do 12 per set. Push-ups are hard. I made it my goal to try to do as many as I could per set and I have greatly improved in this area. The book recommends you do 16 weeks (I don't have the book in front of me, but I think that's about right) of stage 1, if you've never worked out with weights before, so it will only help you to stretch this stage out a little longer until you get more comfortable with the exercises. Good luck and log your workouts! You'll be amazed at how much you can accomplish in just a short period of time.

This thread is so funny, and I agree most of it would annoy me too. I have a funny joke to share. I heard a comic tell this joke a couple of months ago, it was soooo funny. He said, the next time you see someone using a cell phone, lean real close to them, so you can hear the conversation. When they get annoyed at you, and they say something to the effect of, "do you mind? this is a private call". You simply reply, "but you're in PUBLIC. The way I see it, you're invading my PUBLIC!" I laughed so hard I almost fell out of my chair. Well, the comic went on with this joke for a couple of minutes, and he is a lot funnier than me, but you get the point. |

The Wii is the only console system I would ever consider buying because it's interactive. I don't want my kids to lead a sedentary lifestyle, so I don't promote it by buying game consoles for the house. I plan on buying them a wii for this Christmas, and I plan on buying myself the EA Active game because I've heard such good things about it. I couldn't get it last Christmas because I snoozed, and they sold out :(. |

It totally gives me more energy! I actually look forward to my workouts when I never really used to before. I find my workout relieves my stress, helps me sleep better, and I'm not dragging through the day, so I'm definitely getting more accomplished as a result of my not being tired all the time. I'm assuming my clean(er) eating also contributes to this. The way my body is starting to look keeps me motivated to keep working out, which is another bonus. |

I don't drink protein shakes, partially because I hear they are rather disgusting, and partially because I don't think it's worth it at this point in time to shell out the dough to buy it. I try to get my protein intake through the foods I eat. |

There are A LOT of forum posts about this very topic. Most people on here will tell you to increase your calories a little more and lift heavy weights. This will burn fat, and preserve muscle. Weight on the scale, and body fat do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. |

Yes, that's true, they are, but since there are only 7 days in a week, I felt I had little choice if I was to do both. Other people have commented that they lift and do HIIT together, some in the same day. I still feel I'm making progress in my lifting, and I'm mainly doing HIIT for increased fat burn and for better cardiovascular health so something is working for me. |

| Fitness | do men have to do more intense workouts to lose weight compared to women? | Jul 23 2009 21:12 (UTC) |

I don't think so because it all depends on the intensity and the heart rate. You're more likely to get your heart rate up higher if you run than if you walk, so you will burn more calories running the same distance than you would if you walked. |

I focus first on lifting, second on HIIT. I only do HIIT once or twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays because I'm religious about lifting on M-W-F. I do full body workouts on those days, not split. I haven't had a problem with either lifting or HIIT, as far as energy is concerned, and I do think I'm working hard enough, as I'm so exhausted after my session I just want to collapse in a little ball on the floor. About an hour later, I'm back to normal. |

| Weight Loss | My boss keeps bothering me about my weight? | Jul 23 2009 20:51 (UTC) |

Original Post by tonyrocks922: I took major offense to this. What her boss said is clearly illegal and is definitely over-stepping his bounds as a boss. Her weight in no way impacts her ability to do her job. Her ability to do her job should be the only thing her boss should be concerned about. Talking about one's weight IMO is discrimination. He is probably intimidating her because of her age and he's betting on the fact that she will not bring it up to HR. He is creating a hostile workplace for her, which could cause lasting emotional damage. Going to HR with facts in hand, and a solid paper trail does not constitute whining and complaining. Employees should be respected and allowed to do their job without some a****** verbally abusing them. I think you should go to your boss first and tell him to cut it out. Document it, as others have said. If he does not stop, go to HR. Since this job is short-lived, and you will probably never see this jerk again, you can probably wait it out until the job is over. Should you run into this or something similar again, you have every right to go to HR and file a complaint. Be prepared for the reprucussions though, that you may be fired and will have to sue.

| Weight Loss | When to stop losing weight, even though you haven't reached the ideal number.. | Jul 23 2009 19:43 (UTC) |

I have been walking slowly away from the scale, and I'm learning to accept that I may not reach what I consider my ideal weight of 130. My boyfriend says I look fantastic and I'm hovering over 160!!!!! Every day he tells me how much skinnier I'm looking (still have my childbirth belly, but it's slowly going away). I lift weights and do HIIT. I think I'm much more healthy now than I was when I was 130. My new goal is to get down to a size 8, regardless of what the scale says. As long as the fat keeps dropping, I'm happy. |
