Kraft light dressings are great. I think the caesar would go good with tuna. Though, I am vegetarian:) But from back when I wasn't I would guess that the caesar one might work:) |

Yeah, naked or in underwear. Its the most accurate, not only for not actual weight but if I'm tracking weightloss, I'd have to wear exactly the same clothes when I weighed otherwise I couldnt really tell the accurate loss/gain... |

| Vegetarian | how many grams of protein do you eat in a day? | Apr 19 2008 11:19 (UTC) |

I was getting about 30 grams per day of protein and apparently thats too little and so I added a protein bar/shake a day and suddenly I get 60 grams! Its great because I haven't had to change what I eat, I just eat it over and above for the protein as a snack/meal (250 calories). I found a nice summary of research recommendations of protein intake at http://www.becomehealthynow.com/article/prote ins/568: In grams of protein per kg (g/kg), one needs protein depending on their activity level and type of activity. To recover and build muscle on strength training days for example one needs protein, particularly after the exercise session. So here they are in (g/kg): Sedentary (0.8), Endurance (1.2-1.4),Strength (1.7-1.8). Hope that helps. Liz |

| Weight Loss | HELP! BIG QUESTION =( | Apr 16 2008 17:28 (UTC) |

Its absolutely fine to have the shake as long as it falls within your calorie limit as described above. Protein is great for dieters because it helps preserve muscle (and build some if you want and are doing strength training) which is at risk of dwindling when exercising and dieting. It is also generally very difficult to build significant amounts of muscle on a calorie deficit which presumably you'll have if you're on a diet. So dont worry, as long as its within your calorie limit and are not exceeding recommended* protein intake then you should be fine! Not sure what the maximum is but it seems to range from 1-2g of protein per kg bodyweight. This is better as a percentage of calories and depends on your preferred nutrient ratio. For a 50 (carbs), 30 (protein), 20 (fat) for example then if you're eating 1200 calories a day, 360 of those should come from protein which is roughly 90 grams of protein. But if you're exercising then you'll be eating way more calories than that and correspondingly more protein. Goodluck, I hope that helps. |

Yikes, thanks everyone...I do like nuts but I stopped buying them because guess why?..he he: they've got too much fat!!..right, well I'll be adding those back then. Gi-jane I'm vegetarian because I can't handle the taste of meat and fish I so can't eat salmon I'm afraid...which is why I take the supplements but thanks fo the advice. 25% got it, I think at the moment its less than 10%. Thanks again, Liz |

| Also, just a suggestion to make the competition fairer....maybe rather than saying first to lose 15 pounds, say first to lose 10% of their current weight. If she's "bigger" than she'll definitely have the advantage that her body will let go of 15 pounds easier than yours...whereas a percentage makes it more relative to your particular body. Goodluck:) | |||
| Weight Loss | swelling in hands and feet in morning? | Feb 17 2008 21:43 (UTC) |

Hi there If it doesn't improve you should definitely see your doctor. Swelling/Water retention is less worrisome in the evening when you've been up all day but when my feet started being swollen even in the morning...I was skivvied for all sorts of tests...it could be an indication of heart or kidney related problems! Hopefully its just like the others said but do get checked if no improvement. Liz |

Thanks guys. I think you're right there, I need to learn to love and respect my body which is obviously easier said than done. I know our university counselling services deals with these issues in particular, I think we might even have a telephone counselling service which may be less invasive way of starting. Thanks, again. |

The usual instinct is to jump on people with posts like this because they know what CC-ers feel about deliberate undereating...but since you've only been on CC you may not know all that you need to so lose weight sensibly. First I'd suggest you go to the following post: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/654 52.html Its a good starting point on weightloss and how to go about it safely and effectively. Other people have already said this but really, you're better off in the long run. I know, its tempting because you want to lose weight NOW....but you also want to keep it off and remain healthy, you cant do that on 500 calories a day. It will work for a while and then you'll stop losing and it'll be even harder...don't get me wrong - you would lose at 500 calories and stay alive for a long time but you'd be unhealthy, your hair and skin and nails will be unhealthy etc etc. Also, you'll find you may lose weight faster consistently if you do it properly...like 1-2lbs a week consistently instead of 4 pounds per week for two weeks and then weightloss slowing to something ridiculous like a pound a month because your metabolism is messed up. I strongly recommend a minimum of 1200 calories but even that means nothing really unless you know your figures and can work to a deficit that suits you individually. Please take a look at the forums and resources here before carrying on they way you are. Good luck, Liz |

Hi Trid Thanks for your reply. By inadequate I mean non-existant!!...we have a basin and a food prep area but no appliances because the cafetaria is practically 5 feet away from my flat. There's a menu so I can always check when they will be serving "healthy" food...I've been a couple of times and its really difficult to find something healthy and vegetarian options are limited...most stuff is swimming in grease:( Cereal is just about the safest bet (I dont eat eggs). Well, if you suggest that beans, oats and soy milk might be enough protein then thats fine - I just wanted to check if there was anything else I could add. I do take vitamins and omegas. Thanks again, Liz. |

| Weight Loss | Should I count my vitamin calories? | Jan 30 2008 18:07 (UTC) |

| Hmmm...87 calories....well, since you know what the figure is - you might as well add it...it would really make that A+ for the analysis!! Otherwise, I dont think 87 calories makes that much of difference if you're having a 500+ deficit anyway. But a calorie is a calorie!! | |||

| Vitamins dont have calories, yes. But the omega 3 supplements do but it's soooo little I can't imagine how your's could add up to 100 calories. For example: my tablets contain 1000mg of EPO (and other EFA's). All fats are 9 calories per gram, so every tablet (1000mg = 1g) is 9 calories. If I take 3 a day, thats still only 27 calories...I really dont think you need to include this unless...yeah, you are taking like 10 of them (90 calories). It would be a good way to check how much of these EFA's you are getting. I read in a JAMA paper that at least 2-2.5% of daily calories from EFA's is recommended for them to be beneficial. But honestly, I wouldn't even worry about that! | |||

Just to add to what sun123 said: certain types of fats (monounsaturated in particular) will help improve your ratio of good to bad cholesetrol but that is not because they contain the 'good' cholesterol...olive oil, nuts and avocados are all cholesterol free and wont affect your cholesterol intake as indicated by the recommendations. Those recommendations refer to the maximum actual cholesterol intake (available from animal fats). In terms of fats though, these (olive oil, nuts and avocados) are definitely the ones you should be eating. They dont contain cholesterol yet they help reduce total cholesterol in the blood, while increasing the ratio of good (high density lipoprotein: HDL) cholesterol to bad (low density lipo...) cholesterol. |
